एवमेकोनपंचाशद्रथा भग्ना हनूमता । तत्कर्म वीक्ष्य राजापि विसिस्माय ससैनिकः
Thus, forty-nine chariots were broken by Hanuman; witnessing this feat, the king and his army were astonished.
कुपितः प्राह कीशेंद्रं धन्योसि पवनात्मज । पराक्रमन्निदं कर्म न कर्ता न करिष्यति
Enraged, he said to the lord of monkeys, 'Blessed are you, son of the Wind; no one has performed or will perform such a deed of valor.'
क्षणमेकं प्रतीक्षस्व यावत्सज्यं धनुस्त्वहम् । करोमि पवनोद्भूत रामपादाब्जषट्पद
'Wait for a moment while I string my bow; O offspring of the Wind, bee at Rama’s lotus feet, now I will act.'
इत्युक्त्वा चापमात्तज्यं कृत्वा रोषपरिप्लुतः । अस्त्रं पाशुपतं नाम संदधे शर उल्बणे
Having spoken thus, with his bow strung and filled with wrath, he fitted to his arrow the weapon called Pashupata.
ततो भूताश्च वेतालाः पिशाचा योगिनीमुखाः । प्रादुर्बभूवुः सहसा भीषयंतः समीरजम्
Then, spirits, ghouls, and witches appeared suddenly, terrifying the son of the Wind.
कपिः पाशुपतैरस्त्रैर्बद्धो लोकैरभीक्षितः । हाहेति च वदंत्येते यावत्तावत्समीरजः
The monkey, bound by the Pashupata weapons and watched by all worlds, heard them cry out 'Alas!'—yet the son of the Wind remained.
स्मृत्वा रामं स्वमनसा त्रोटयामास तत्क्षणात् । स मुक्तगात्रः सहसा युयुधे सुरथं नृपम्
Remembering Rama in his mind, he instantly broke those bonds; freed in body, he suddenly fought with King Suratha.
तं मुक्तगात्रं संवीक्ष्य सुरथः परमास्त्रवित् । महाबलं मन्यमानो ब्राह्ममस्त्रं समाददे
Seeing him freed, Suratha, master of great weapons, thinking him immensely powerful, took up the Brahma weapon.
मारुतिर्ब्राह्ममस्त्रं तु निजगाल हसन्बली । तन्निगीर्णं नृपो दृष्ट्वा रामं सस्मार भूमिपः
But Maruti, powerful and smiling, swallowed the Brahma weapon; seeing it consumed, the king remembered Rama.
स्मृत्वा दाशरथिं रामं रामास्त्रं स्वशरासने । संधाय तं जगादेदं बद्धोसि कपिपुंगव
Recalling Rama, son of Dasharatha, he fitted the Rama weapon to his own bow and said to him, 'Now you are bound, foremost of monkeys.'
श्रुत्वा तत्प्रक्रमेद्यावत्तावद्बद्धो रणांगणे । राज्ञा रामास्त्रतो वीरो हनूमान्रामसेवकः
Hearing this, Hanuman, the servant of Rama, was immediately bound on the battlefield by the king with the Rama weapon.
उवाच भूपं हनुमान्किंकरोमि महीभुज । मत्स्वाम्यस्त्रेण संबद्धो नान्येन प्राकृतेन वै
Hanuman said to the king, 'What can I do, O lord of the earth? Bound by my master's weapon, I cannot be restrained by any ordinary means.'
तन्मानयामिभूपालनयस्वस्वपुरंप्रति । मोचयिष्यति मत्स्वामी आगत्य स दयानिधिः
Bring the king back to his own city; my master, the ocean of compassion, will come and release him.
बद्धे समीरजे क्रुद्धः पुष्कलो भूमिपं ययौ । तं पुष्कलं समायांतं विव्याध वसुभिः शरैः
When the king was bound by Samīraja, Puṣkala, enraged, went to the king; as Puṣkala approached, he struck him with arrows rich in wealth.
अनेकबाणसाहस्रैर्निजघान नृपं बली । राज्ञानेके शरास्तस्य च्छिन्नाः प्रधनमंडले
With countless thousands of arrows, the mighty Puṣkala slew the king; many of the king's arrows were broken in the main battlefield.
एवं समरसंक्रुद्धे सुरथे पुष्कले तथा । बाणैर्व्याप्तं जगत्सर्वं स्थास्नुभूयश्चरिष्णु च
Thus, as Suratha and Puṣkala fought fiercely in battle, the entire world, both stationary and moving, was filled with arrows.
तेषां रणोद्यमं वीक्ष्य मुमुहुः सुरसैनिकाः । मानवानां तु का वार्ता क्षणात्त्रासं समीयुषाम्
Seeing their zeal for battle, the divine soldiers were bewildered; what can be said of humans, who were terrified in an instant.
अस्त्रप्रत्यस्त्रविगमैर्महामंत्रपरिस्तुतैः । बभूव तुमुलं युद्धं वीराणां रोमहर्षणम्
With the exchange of weapons and counter-weapons, praised by great mantras, the tumultuous battle of heroes became hair-raising.
तदा प्रकुपितो राजा नाराचं तु समाददे । छिन्नः स तु क्रुधा मुक्तैर्वत्सदंतैः सभारतैः
Then, the enraged king took up a nārāca arrow; but it was cut down by the furious blows of Vatsadanta and the Bhāratas.
छिन्ने तस्मिञ्छरे राजा कोपादन्यं समाददे । छिनत्ति यावत्स शरं तावल्लग्नो हृदि क्षतः
When that arrow was cut, the king, in anger, took up another; as he was about to cut the arrow, he was struck in the heart and wounded.
मूर्च्छां प्राप महातेजाः पुष्कलो महदद्भुतम् । युद्धं विधाय सुमहद्राज्ञा सह महामतिः
Puṣkala, of great brilliance, fell unconscious—a marvelous event—having fought a tremendous battle with the wise king.
पुष्कले पतिते राजा शत्रुघ्नः शत्रुतापनः । सुरथं प्रति संक्रुद्धो जगाम स्यंदनस्थितः
When Puṣkala fell, King Śatrughna, the tormentor of foes, became enraged and went toward Suratha, standing on his chariot.
उवाच सुरथं भूपं रामभ्राता महाबलः । त्वया महत्कृतं कर्म यद्बद्धः पवनात्मजः
The mighty brother of Rāma spoke to King Suratha: 'You have performed a great deed by binding the son of the wind.'
पुष्कलोऽपि महावीरस्तथान्ये मम सैनिकाः । पातिताः प्रधने घोरे महाबलपराक्रमाः
Puṣkala, too, a great hero, and others of my army, powerful and valiant, have been struck down in the fierce main battle.
इदानीं तिष्ठ मद्वीरान्पातयित्वा रणांगणे । कुत्र यास्यसि भूमीश सहस्व मम सायकान्
Now, stand firm; after you have struck down my heroes on the battlefield, where will you go, O lord of the earth? Endure my arrows.
इत्थमाश्रुत्य वीरस्य भाषितं सुरथो बली । जगाद रामपादाब्जं दधच्चेतसि शोभनम्
Hearing thus the words of the hero, the powerful Suratha, holding the beautiful lotus feet of Rāma in his mind, spoke.
मया ते पातिताः संख्ये वीरा मारुतजोन्मुखाः । इदानीं पातयिष्यामि त्वामपि प्रधनांगणे
I have struck down your heroes in battle, those facing the son of the wind; now I will strike you down as well in the main arena.
स्मरस्व रामं यो वीरः स्वमागत्य प्ररक्षति । अन्यथा जीवितं नास्ति मत्पुरः शत्रुतापन
Remember Rāma, the hero who comes and protects his own; otherwise, there is no life for you before me, O tormentor of foes.
इत्युक्त्वा बाणसाहस्रैस्तं जघान महीपतिः । शत्रुघ्नं शरसंघातपंजरे न्यदधात्परम्
Having spoken thus, the king struck Śatrughna with thousands of arrows, enclosing him in a cage of arrow clusters.
शत्रुघ्नः शरसंघातं मुंचंतं वह्निदैवतम् । अस्त्रं मुमोच दाहार्थं शराणां नतपर्वणाम्
Śatrughna, seeing the clusters of arrows released like fire deities, released a weapon to burn the curved arrows.
