सुरथ उवाच। धन्योसि कपिवर्य त्वं महाबलपराक्रमः । येन राममहत्कृत्यं कृतं राक्षसके पुरे
Suratha said: You are blessed, O foremost among monkeys, mighty and valiant, by whom the great task of Rāma was accomplished in the city of the demons.
त्वं रामचरणस्यासि सेवको भक्तिसंयुतः । त्वया वीरेण मत्पुत्रः पातितश्चंपको बली
You are a devoted servant at Rāma's feet; yet by you, O hero, my powerful son Campaka was slain.
इदानीं त्वां तु संबध्य गंतास्मि नगरेमम । यत्नात्तिष्ठ कपीशेशसत्यमुक्तं मया स्मृतम्
Now, binding you, I shall go to my city; strive, O lord of monkeys, for I have spoken the truth and remember it.
इति भाषितमाकर्ण्य सुरथस्य कपीश्वरः । उवाच धीरया वाण्या रणे वीरैकभूषिते
Hearing these words of Suratha, the lord of monkeys replied with calm speech, adorned as the sole hero on the battlefield.
हनूमानुवाच। त्वं रामचरणस्मारी वयं रामस्य सेवकाः । बध्नासि चेन्मां प्रसभं मोचयिष्यति मत्प्रभुः
Hanuman said: You remember Rāma's feet; we are servants of Rāma. If you bind me forcibly, my master will surely release me.
कुरु वीर भवत्स्वांतस्थितं सत्यं प्रतिश्रुतम् । रामं स्मरन्वै दुःखांतं याति वेदा वदंत्यदः
O hero, fulfill the truth you have pledged in your heart; remembering Rāma, one attains the end of sorrow, so say the Vedas.
शेष उवाच। इति ब्रुवंतं सुरथः प्रशस्य पवनात्मजम् । विव्याध बाणैर्बहुभिः शितैः शाणेन दारुणैः
Śeṣa said: Praising the son of the wind as he spoke thus, Suratha struck him with many sharp, cruel arrows.
तान्मुक्तानगणय्याथ बाणाञ्छोणितपातिनः । करे जग्राह कोदंडं सज्यं शरसमन्वितम्
Hanuman, disregarding those arrows that spilled blood, seized in his hand a bow, strung and fitted with arrows.
गृहीत्वा करयोश्चापं बभंज कुपितः कपिः । चीत्कुर्वंस्त्रासयन्वीरान्नखैर्दीर्णान्सृजन्भटान्
Grasping the bow with both hands, the enraged monkey broke it, uttering cries that terrified the warriors, tearing them with his claws and scattering them.
तेन भग्नं धनुर्दृष्ट्वा स्वकीयं गुणसंयुतम् । अपरं धनुरादत्त महद्गुणविशोभितम्
Seeing his own bow broken, strung and ready, Suratha took up another bow, large and adorned with a fine string.
तच्चापि जगृहे रोषात्कपिश्चापं बभंज तत् । अन्यच्चापं समादत्त तद्बभंज महाबलः
Hanuman seized that bow too in anger and broke it; then he took up another bow and broke it with his great strength.
तस्मिंश्चापे प्रभग्नेऽपि सोऽन्यद्धनुरुपाददत् । सोपि चापं बभंजाशु महावेगसमन्वितः
Even when that bow was broken, Suratha took up yet another; Hanuman swiftly broke that bow as well, with immense speed.
एवं राज्ञस्तु चापानामशीतिर्विदलीकृता । क्षणे क्षणे महारोषात्कुर्वन्नादाननेकधा
Thus, in moments of great wrath, Hanuman shattered eighty bows of the king, making many resounding noises.
तदात्यंतं प्रकुपितः शक्तिमुग्रामथाददे । शक्त्या स ताडितो वीरः पपात क्षणमुत्सुकः
Then, extremely enraged, Suratha took up a fierce spear; struck by the spear, the hero fell for a moment, eager for battle.
उत्थाय स्यंदनं राज्ञो जग्राह कुपितो भृशम् । उड्डीनस्तं गृहीत्वा तु समुद्रमतिवेगतः
Rising up, the king, greatly enraged, seized his chariot; leaping, he took it and sped with extreme swiftness toward the ocean.
तमुड्डीनं समालक्ष्य सुरथः परवीरहा । ताडयामास परिघैर्हृदि मारुतिमुद्यतम्
Seeing him leap, Suratha, the destroyer of enemy heroes, struck the advancing Maruti in the chest with iron clubs.
मुक्तस्तेन रथो दूराच्चूर्णीभूतोऽभवत्क्षणात् । सोऽन्यरथं समारुह्य ययौ वेगात्समीरजम्
Freed by that blow, the chariot was instantly shattered to pieces from afar; mounting another chariot, he swiftly pursued the son of the Wind.
हनूमांस्तद्रथं पुच्छे संवेष्ट्य प्रधनांगणे । हयसारथिसंयुक्तं बभंज सपताकिनम्
Hanuman, wrapping that chariot with his tail in the midst of the main battlefield, broke it—along with its horses, charioteer, and banners.
अन्यं रथं समास्थाय ययौ राजा महाबलः । बभंज तं रथं वेगान्मारुतिः कुपितांगकः
Mounting another chariot, the mighty king advanced; but Maruti, his limbs furious, swiftly broke that chariot as well.
भग्नं तं स्यंदनं वीक्ष्य सुरथोऽन्यसमाश्रितः । भग्नः स तेन सहसा हयसारथिसंयुतः
Seeing that chariot destroyed, Suratha took refuge in another; but that too, with its horses and charioteer, was suddenly broken by him.
एवमेकोनपंचाशद्रथा भग्ना हनूमता । तत्कर्म वीक्ष्य राजापि विसिस्माय ससैनिकः
Thus, forty-nine chariots were broken by Hanuman; witnessing this feat, the king and his army were astonished.
कुपितः प्राह कीशेंद्रं धन्योसि पवनात्मज । पराक्रमन्निदं कर्म न कर्ता न करिष्यति
Enraged, he said to the lord of monkeys, 'Blessed are you, son of the Wind; no one has performed or will perform such a deed of valor.'
क्षणमेकं प्रतीक्षस्व यावत्सज्यं धनुस्त्वहम् । करोमि पवनोद्भूत रामपादाब्जषट्पद
'Wait for a moment while I string my bow; O offspring of the Wind, bee at Rama’s lotus feet, now I will act.'
इत्युक्त्वा चापमात्तज्यं कृत्वा रोषपरिप्लुतः । अस्त्रं पाशुपतं नाम संदधे शर उल्बणे
Having spoken thus, with his bow strung and filled with wrath, he fitted to his arrow the weapon called Pashupata.
ततो भूताश्च वेतालाः पिशाचा योगिनीमुखाः । प्रादुर्बभूवुः सहसा भीषयंतः समीरजम्
Then, spirits, ghouls, and witches appeared suddenly, terrifying the son of the Wind.
कपिः पाशुपतैरस्त्रैर्बद्धो लोकैरभीक्षितः । हाहेति च वदंत्येते यावत्तावत्समीरजः
The monkey, bound by the Pashupata weapons and watched by all worlds, heard them cry out 'Alas!'—yet the son of the Wind remained.
स्मृत्वा रामं स्वमनसा त्रोटयामास तत्क्षणात् । स मुक्तगात्रः सहसा युयुधे सुरथं नृपम्
Remembering Rama in his mind, he instantly broke those bonds; freed in body, he suddenly fought with King Suratha.
तं मुक्तगात्रं संवीक्ष्य सुरथः परमास्त्रवित् । महाबलं मन्यमानो ब्राह्ममस्त्रं समाददे
Seeing him freed, Suratha, master of great weapons, thinking him immensely powerful, took up the Brahma weapon.
मारुतिर्ब्राह्ममस्त्रं तु निजगाल हसन्बली । तन्निगीर्णं नृपो दृष्ट्वा रामं सस्मार भूमिपः
But Maruti, powerful and smiling, swallowed the Brahma weapon; seeing it consumed, the king remembered Rama.
स्मृत्वा दाशरथिं रामं रामास्त्रं स्वशरासने । संधाय तं जगादेदं बद्धोसि कपिपुंगव
Recalling Rama, son of Dasharatha, he fitted the Rama weapon to his own bow and said to him, 'Now you are bound, foremost of monkeys.'
