महाबलः सुतश्चास्य बद्ध्वा यः पुष्कलं भटम् । तस्मान्मोचय वीराग्र्य कथं तिष्ठसि चाहवे
'That mighty son, who has bound the warrior Pushkala—release him at once, O foremost of heroes! Why do you stand idle on the battlefield?'
एतद्वाक्यं समाकर्ण्य हनूमानोमिति ब्रुवन् । जगाम तं मोचयितुं पुष्कलं चंपकाद्भटात्
Hearing these words, Hanuman replied, 'So be it,' and went to free Pushkala from the warrior Champaka.
हनूमंतमथालोक्य तं मोचयितुमागतम् । बाणैः शतैश्च साहस्रैर्जघान परकोपनः
Seeing Hanuman approaching to free him, the enraged enemy struck at him with hundreds and thousands of arrows.
बाणांस्तान्स बभंजाशु मुक्तांस्तेन महात्मना । पुनरप्येनमेवाशु बाणान्मुंचन्महानभूत्
Hanuman, the great-souled one, swiftly broke all those arrows as they were released; yet again, the mighty foe quickly shot more arrows at him.
तान्सर्वांश्चूर्णयामास नाराचान्वैरिमोचितान् । शालं करे समाधृत्य जघान नृपनंदनम्
Hanuman crushed all those arrows, the iron-tipped shafts released by the enemy; then, seizing a shala tree in his hand, he struck the prince.
शालं तेन विनिर्मुक्तं तिलशः कृतवान्बली । गजो हनूमता मुक्तो नृपनंदन मस्तके
The powerful Hanuman shattered the shala tree released at him into tiny pieces; then, with an elephant, he struck the prince's head.
सोऽप्याहतश्चंपकेन मृतो भूमौ पपातसः । शिलाः संमोचयामास हनूमान्परमास्त्रवित्
Struck by Champaka, the elephant fell dead to the ground; Hanuman, master of supreme weapons, released the stones.
चंपकस्ताः शिलाः सर्वाः क्षणाच्चूर्णितवान्भृशम् । बाणयंत्रिकया ब्रह्मन्महच्चित्रमभूदिदम्
Champaka instantly pulverized all those stones with great force, using his arrow-machine; O Brahman, this was a wondrous sight.
स्वमुक्तास्ताः शिलाः सर्वाश्चूर्णिता वीक्ष्य मारुतिः । चुकोप हृदयेऽत्यतं बहुवीर्यमिति स्मरन्
Seeing all the stones he had thrown shattered, Hanuman, recalling his own great valor, became exceedingly angry in his heart.
आगत्य च करे धृत्वा नभस्युत्पतितः कपिः । तावद्ययौ नेत्रपथादुपरि क्षिप्रवेगवान्
Then the monkey, seizing another stone, leapt into the sky and swiftly advanced, moving out of sight above.
चंपकस्तं हनूमंतं युयुधे नभसि स्थितः । बाहुयुद्धेन महता ताडितः कपिपुंगवः
Champaka engaged Hanuman, who stood in the sky, in a great hand-to-hand battle, striking the foremost of monkeys.
चुकोप मानसे वीरो गर्वपर्वतदारुणः । पदा धृत्वा चंपकं तं ताडयामास भूतले
The hero, fierce as a mountain of pride, grew angry in his mind; grasping Champaka with his foot, he struck him to the ground.
ताडितोऽसौ कपींद्रेण क्षणादुत्थाय वेगवान् । हनूमंतं तु लांगूले धृत्वा बभ्राम सर्वतः
Struck by the lord of monkeys, Champaka quickly rose up, seized Hanuman by the tail, and whirled him all around.
कपींद्रस्तद्बलं वीक्ष्य हसन्पादेऽग्रहीत्पुनः । भ्रामयित्वा शतगुणं गजोपस्थे ह्यपातयत्
The monkey king, seeing that strength, laughed and again seized him by the foot; spinning him a hundred times, he threw him onto the back of the elephant.
पपात भूमौ सुबलो राजसूनुः स चंपकः । मूर्च्छितो वीरभूषाढ्यमलंकुर्वन्रणांगणम्
The powerful prince Champaka fell to the ground, unconscious, adorning the battlefield with his heroic ornaments.
तदा हाहेति वै लोकाश्चुक्रुशुश्चंपकानुगाः । पुष्कलं मोचयामास बद्धं चंपकपाशतः
Then the followers of Champaka cried out 'Alas!'; Hanuman freed Pushkala, who had been bound by Champaka's bonds.
शेष उवाच। चंपकं पतितं दृष्ट्वा सुरथः क्षत्रियो बली । पुत्रदुःखपरीतांगो जगाम स्यंदने स्थितः
Śeṣa said: Seeing Campaka fallen, Suratha, the powerful Kṣatriya, afflicted by grief for his son, proceeded while standing in his chariot.
कपींद्रमाजुहावाथ सुरथः कोपसंयुतः । निःश्वासवेगं संमुंचन्महाबलसमन्वितः
Then Suratha, filled with anger, summoned the lord of the monkeys, exhaling forcefully, endowed with great strength.
आह्वयानं नृपं दृष्ट्वा निजं वीरः कपीश्वरः । जगाम तं महावीरो महावेगसमन्वितः
Seeing the king's challenge, the heroic lord of monkeys approached him, possessing immense speed and valor.
तमागतं हनूमंतं तृणीकुर्वं तमुद्भटान् । उवाच सुरथो राजा मेघगंभीरसुस्वरः
When Hanuman arrived, disregarding those fierce warriors, King Suratha spoke to him with a voice deep as thunderclouds.
सुरथ उवाच। धन्योसि कपिवर्य त्वं महाबलपराक्रमः । येन राममहत्कृत्यं कृतं राक्षसके पुरे
Suratha said: You are blessed, O foremost among monkeys, mighty and valiant, by whom the great task of Rāma was accomplished in the city of the demons.
त्वं रामचरणस्यासि सेवको भक्तिसंयुतः । त्वया वीरेण मत्पुत्रः पातितश्चंपको बली
You are a devoted servant at Rāma's feet; yet by you, O hero, my powerful son Campaka was slain.
इदानीं त्वां तु संबध्य गंतास्मि नगरेमम । यत्नात्तिष्ठ कपीशेशसत्यमुक्तं मया स्मृतम्
Now, binding you, I shall go to my city; strive, O lord of monkeys, for I have spoken the truth and remember it.
इति भाषितमाकर्ण्य सुरथस्य कपीश्वरः । उवाच धीरया वाण्या रणे वीरैकभूषिते
Hearing these words of Suratha, the lord of monkeys replied with calm speech, adorned as the sole hero on the battlefield.
हनूमानुवाच। त्वं रामचरणस्मारी वयं रामस्य सेवकाः । बध्नासि चेन्मां प्रसभं मोचयिष्यति मत्प्रभुः
Hanuman said: You remember Rāma's feet; we are servants of Rāma. If you bind me forcibly, my master will surely release me.
कुरु वीर भवत्स्वांतस्थितं सत्यं प्रतिश्रुतम् । रामं स्मरन्वै दुःखांतं याति वेदा वदंत्यदः
O hero, fulfill the truth you have pledged in your heart; remembering Rāma, one attains the end of sorrow, so say the Vedas.
शेष उवाच। इति ब्रुवंतं सुरथः प्रशस्य पवनात्मजम् । विव्याध बाणैर्बहुभिः शितैः शाणेन दारुणैः
Śeṣa said: Praising the son of the wind as he spoke thus, Suratha struck him with many sharp, cruel arrows.
तान्मुक्तानगणय्याथ बाणाञ्छोणितपातिनः । करे जग्राह कोदंडं सज्यं शरसमन्वितम्
Hanuman, disregarding those arrows that spilled blood, seized in his hand a bow, strung and fitted with arrows.
गृहीत्वा करयोश्चापं बभंज कुपितः कपिः । चीत्कुर्वंस्त्रासयन्वीरान्नखैर्दीर्णान्सृजन्भटान्
Grasping the bow with both hands, the enraged monkey broke it, uttering cries that terrified the warriors, tearing them with his claws and scattering them.
तेन भग्नं धनुर्दृष्ट्वा स्वकीयं गुणसंयुतम् । अपरं धनुरादत्त महद्गुणविशोभितम्
Seeing his own bow broken, strung and ready, Suratha took up another bow, large and adorned with a fine string.
