तैर्बाणैर्व्यथितो वीरः शरान्पंच समाददे । सुतीक्ष्णाग्रान्महाकोपाद्वारयन्पर्वतानिव
Afflicted by those arrows, the hero seized five arrows with very sharp tips, and, in great anger, blocked them as if they were mountains.
ते बाणास्तस्य बाणाश्च परस्परमथोर्जिताः । आकाशे रचिताश्छिन्नाः शतधा राजसूनुना
Those arrows and his arrows, fiercely clashing with each other, were shattered in the sky and scattered into a hundred pieces by the prince.
छित्त्वा बाणान्सुतीक्ष्णाग्रान्सुरथांगोद्भवो बली । बाणाञ्छतं समाधत्त पुष्कलं ताडितुं हृदि
Having cut those arrows with sharp tips, Suratha's son, powerful in battle, took up a hundred arrows, abundant, to strike at the heart.
ते बाणाः शतधाच्छिन्नाः पुष्कलेन महात्मना । अपतन्समरोपांते शरवेगप्रपीडिताः
Those arrows, cut into a hundred pieces by the great-souled Pushkala, fell at the end of the battle, overwhelmed by the force of the arrows.
तदा तत्सुमहत्कर्म दृष्ट्वा राज्ञः सुतो बली । सहस्रेण शराणां च ताडयन्वक्षसि स्फुटम्
Then, seeing that great feat, the powerful son of the king struck Pushkala's chest clearly with a thousand arrows.
तानप्याशु प्रचिच्छेद पुष्कलः परमास्त्रवित् । पुनरप्याशु स्वे चापे समाधत्तायुतं शरान्
Pushkala, master of supreme weapons, swiftly cut those arrows; again, he quickly placed ten thousand arrows on his own bow.
तानप्याशु प्रचिच्छेद पुष्कलः परमास्त्रवित् । ततोऽत्यतं प्रकुपितः शरवृष्टिमथाकरोत्
Pushkala, master of supreme weapons, swiftly cut those arrows as well; then, exceedingly enraged, he produced a shower of arrows.
शरवृष्टिं समायांतीं मत्वा चंपक वीरहा । साधुसाधुप्रशंसंतं पुष्कलं समताडयत्
Seeing the shower of arrows approaching, Champaka, the slayer of heroes, praised Pushkala for his skill and struck him.
पुष्कलश्चंपकं दृष्ट्वा महावीर्यसमन्वितम् । ब्रह्मणोऽस्त्रसमाधत्त स्वे चापे सर्वशस्त्रवित्
Pushkala, seeing Champaka endowed with great valor, placed the Brahma weapon on his own bow, being skilled in all weapons.
तेन मुक्तं महाशस्त्रं प्रजज्वाल दिशो दश । खं रोदसी व्याप्य विश्वं प्रलयं कर्तुमुद्यतम्
When that great weapon was released, it blazed in all ten directions, filling the sky and the earth, ready to bring about destruction of the world.
चंपको मुक्तमस्त्रं तद्दृष्ट्वा सर्वास्त्रकोविदः । तत्संहर्तुं तदेवास्त्रं मुमोच रिपुमुद्यतम्
Champaka, expert in all weapons, seeing that weapon released, released the same weapon to counter the enemy's attack.
द्वयोरेकतमं तेजः प्रलयं मेनिरे जनाः । संजहार तदास्त्रास्त्रमेकीभूतं परास्त्रकम्
People believed the combined brilliance of the two would bring destruction; at that moment, the weapons merged and neutralized each other.
तत्कर्मचाद्भुतं दृष्ट्वा पुष्कलस्तिष्ठतिष्ठ च । ब्रुवञ्छरानमोघांस्तु चंपकं स क्रुधाहनत्
Seeing that wondrous feat, Pushkala called out, 'Stop! Stop!' and, in anger, struck Champaka with unfailing arrows.
चंपकस्ताञ्छरान्मुक्तानगणय्य महामनाः । रामास्त्रं प्रमुमोचाथ पुष्कलं प्रति दारुणम्
Champaka, disregarding those arrows released, with a great mind, then unleashed the fierce Rama weapon against Pushkala.
तन्मुक्तमस्त्रमालोक्य चंपकेन महात्मना । छेत्तुं यावन्मनश्चक्रे तावद्ग्रस्तः शरेण सः
Seeing that weapon released, Champaka, the great-souled, resolved to cut it; but before he could, he was seized by an arrow.
बद्धश्चंपकवीरेण रथे स्वे स्थापितः पुनः । पुरं प्रेषयितुं तावन्मनश्चक्रे महामनाः
Bound by the hero Champaka, he was placed again on his own chariot; then, with a great mind, he resolved to send him to the city.
हाहाकारो महानासीद्बद्धे पुष्कलसंज्ञिके । शत्रुघ्नं प्रययुर्योधाः पलायनपरायणाः
A great cry of 'Alas!' arose when Pushkala was bound; the warriors fled toward Shatrughna, intent on escape.
भग्नांस्तान्वीक्ष्य शत्रुघ्नो हनूमंतमुवाच ह । केन वीरेण मे भग्नं बलं वीरैरलंकृतम्
Seeing them broken, Shatrughna spoke to Hanuman: 'By which hero has my force, adorned with heroes, been defeated?'
तदोवाच महीनाथ पुष्कलं परवीरहा । बद्ध्वा नयति वीरोऽसौ चंपकः स्वपदोद्धुरः
Then the lord of the earth, the destroyer of enemy heroes, spoke: 'That valiant Champaka, having bound Pushkala, is leading him away, proud of his own strength.'
तस्येदृग्वाक्यमाकर्ण्य शत्रुघ्नः कोपसंयुतः । उवाच पवनोद्भूतं मोचयाशु नृपात्मजात्
Hearing such words, Shatrughna, filled with anger, said to Hanuman: 'Quickly free the prince, the son of the king, who has been bound.'
महाबलः सुतश्चास्य बद्ध्वा यः पुष्कलं भटम् । तस्मान्मोचय वीराग्र्य कथं तिष्ठसि चाहवे
'That mighty son, who has bound the warrior Pushkala—release him at once, O foremost of heroes! Why do you stand idle on the battlefield?'
एतद्वाक्यं समाकर्ण्य हनूमानोमिति ब्रुवन् । जगाम तं मोचयितुं पुष्कलं चंपकाद्भटात्
Hearing these words, Hanuman replied, 'So be it,' and went to free Pushkala from the warrior Champaka.
हनूमंतमथालोक्य तं मोचयितुमागतम् । बाणैः शतैश्च साहस्रैर्जघान परकोपनः
Seeing Hanuman approaching to free him, the enraged enemy struck at him with hundreds and thousands of arrows.
बाणांस्तान्स बभंजाशु मुक्तांस्तेन महात्मना । पुनरप्येनमेवाशु बाणान्मुंचन्महानभूत्
Hanuman, the great-souled one, swiftly broke all those arrows as they were released; yet again, the mighty foe quickly shot more arrows at him.
तान्सर्वांश्चूर्णयामास नाराचान्वैरिमोचितान् । शालं करे समाधृत्य जघान नृपनंदनम्
Hanuman crushed all those arrows, the iron-tipped shafts released by the enemy; then, seizing a shala tree in his hand, he struck the prince.
शालं तेन विनिर्मुक्तं तिलशः कृतवान्बली । गजो हनूमता मुक्तो नृपनंदन मस्तके
The powerful Hanuman shattered the shala tree released at him into tiny pieces; then, with an elephant, he struck the prince's head.
सोऽप्याहतश्चंपकेन मृतो भूमौ पपातसः । शिलाः संमोचयामास हनूमान्परमास्त्रवित्
Struck by Champaka, the elephant fell dead to the ground; Hanuman, master of supreme weapons, released the stones.
चंपकस्ताः शिलाः सर्वाः क्षणाच्चूर्णितवान्भृशम् । बाणयंत्रिकया ब्रह्मन्महच्चित्रमभूदिदम्
Champaka instantly pulverized all those stones with great force, using his arrow-machine; O Brahman, this was a wondrous sight.
स्वमुक्तास्ताः शिलाः सर्वाश्चूर्णिता वीक्ष्य मारुतिः । चुकोप हृदयेऽत्यतं बहुवीर्यमिति स्मरन्
Seeing all the stones he had thrown shattered, Hanuman, recalling his own great valor, became exceedingly angry in his heart.
आगत्य च करे धृत्वा नभस्युत्पतितः कपिः । तावद्ययौ नेत्रपथादुपरि क्षिप्रवेगवान्
Then the monkey, seizing another stone, leapt into the sky and swiftly advanced, moving out of sight above.
