ते परत्रांधकूपे च पात्यंते च महार्दिताः । योऽन्नं स्वयमुपाहृत्य मधुरं चात्तिलोलुपः
They are cast, greatly afflicted, into a dark pit in the next world. One who, greedy for taste, brings food for himself and eats sweet things—
न देवाय न सुहृदे ददाति रसनापरः । स पतत्येव नरके कृमिभोजनसंज्ञिते
And does not give to the gods or friends, being attached to his tongue, falls into the hell called Kṛmibhojana, where he is food for worms.
अनापदि नरो यस्तु हिरण्यादीन्यपाहरेत् । ब्रह्मस्वं वा महादुष्टे संदंशे नरके पतेत्
A man who, without distress, steals gold or other things, or the wealth of Brahmins, falls into the dreadful Saṃdaṃśa hell.
यः स्वदेहं प्रपुष्णाति नान्यं जानाति मूढधीः । स पात्यते तैलतप्ते कुंभीपाकेऽतिदारुणे
He who nourishes only his own body and knows no one else, being of deluded mind, is cast into the exceedingly terrible Kumbhīpāka, where oil is boiling.
यो नागम्यां स्त्रियं मोहाद्योषिद्भावाच्च कामयेत् । तं तया किंकराः सूर्म्या परिरंभं च कुर्वते
He who, out of delusion or lust, desires a woman who should not be approached, is embraced by the servants of Sūrmī together with her.
ये बलाद्वेदमर्यादां लुंपंति स्वबलोद्धताः । ते वैतरण्यां पतिता मांसशोणितभक्षकाः
Those who, driven by their own strength, forcibly violate the boundaries of the Veda, fall into the Vaitaraṇī river and consume flesh and blood.
वृषलद्यं यः स्त्रियं कृत्वा तया गार्हस्थ्यमाचरेत् । पूयोदे निपतत्येव महादुःखसमन्वितः
He who, after marrying a woman of a degraded caste, lives a household life with her, surely falls into a pus-filled hell, afflicted with great suffering.
ये दंभमाश्रयंते वै धूर्ता लोकस्य वंचने । वैशसे नरके मूढाः पतंति यमताडिताः
Those deceitful ones who resort to hypocrisy to cheat people, fall into the cruel hell, struck by Yama, bewildered.
ये सवर्णां स्त्रियं मूढा रेतः स्वं पाययंति च । रेतःकुल्यासु ते पापा रेतःपानेषु तत्पराः
Those foolish ones who make a woman of their own caste drink their semen, are sinful and become devoted to drinking semen in the streams of semen.
ये चौरा वह्निदा दुष्टा गरदा ग्रामलुंठकाः । सारमेयादने ते वै पात्यंते पातकान्विताः
Those who are thieves, arsonists, wicked poisoners, and village plunderers, fall into the hell of being eaten by dogs, afflicted by sin.
कूटसाक्ष्यं वदत्यद्धा पुरुषः पापसंभृतः । परकीयं तु द्रव्यं यो हरति प्रसभं बली
A man filled with sin who speaks false testimony, and who forcibly takes another's property, is cast down.
सोऽवीचिनरके पापी अवाग्वक्त्रः पतत्यधः । तत्र दुःखं महद्भुक्त्वा पापिष्ठां योनिमाव्रजेत्
Such a sinner falls headfirst into the Avīci hell; after suffering great pain there, he attains a most wicked birth.
यो नरो रसनास्वादात्सुरां पिबति मूढधीः । तं पाययंति लोहस्य रसं धर्मस्य किंकराः
The man of foolish mind who drinks liquor for the pleasure of taste, is made to drink molten metal by the servants of Dharma.
यो गुरूनवमन्येत स्वविद्याचारदर्पितः । स मृतः पात्यते क्षारनरकेऽधोमुखः पुमान्
He who, proud of his own learning and conduct, does not honor his teachers, after death is cast headfirst into the caustic hell.
विश्वासघातं कुर्वंति ये नरा धर्मनिष्कृताः । शूलप्रोते च नरके पात्यंते बहुयातने
Those men devoid of righteousness who betray trust, are cast into the hell of impalement, suffering many torments.
पिशुनो यो नरान्सर्वानुद्वेजयति वाक्यतः । दंदशूके च पतितो दंदशूकैः स दश्यते
He who agitates all people with slanderous words, falls into the hell of snake punishment and is bitten by serpents.
एवं राजन्ननेके वै नरकाः पापकारिणाम् । पापं कृत्वा प्रयांत्येते पीडां यांति सुदारुणाम्
Thus, O King, there are many hells for those who commit sin; after doing evil, they go to these and suffer terrible pain.
यैर्न श्रुता रामकथा न परोपकृतिः कृता । तेषां सर्वाणि दुःखानि भवंति नरकांतरे
Those who have not heard the story of Rāma nor performed acts of charity, all their sufferings occur in the various hells.
अत्र यस्य सुखं स्वर्गे भूयात्तस्य इतीर्यते । ये दुःखिनो रोगयुता नरकादागताश्च ते
Here it is said: whoever has happiness in heaven, those are the ones; those who are afflicted with pain and disease are those who have come from hell.
शेष उवाच। एतच्छ्रुत्वा महीपालः कंपमानः क्षणे क्षणे । पप्रच्छ भूयस्तं विप्रं सर्वसंशयनुत्तये
Śeṣa said: Hearing this, the king trembled again and again, and repeatedly questioned the sage to resolve all his doubts.
तत्तत्पापस्य चिह्नानि कथयस्व महामुने । केन पापेन किं चिह्नं भूलोके उपजायते
Tell me, O great sage, the signs of each sin; by which sin does which mark arise in the world?
इति श्रुत्वा तु तद्वाक्यं मुनिः प्रोवाच भूपतिम् । शृणु राजन्प्रवक्ष्यामि चिह्नानि पापकारिणाम्
Having heard those words, the sage spoke to the king: Listen, O King, I will declare the signs of those who commit sin.
शौनक उवाच। सुरापः श्यामदंतश्च नरकांते प्रजायते । अभक्ष्यभक्षकारी च जायते गुल्मकोदरः
Śaunaka said: One who drinks alcohol or has blackened teeth is born at the end of hell; one who eats forbidden food is born with tumors or abdominal diseases.
उदक्यावीक्षितं भुक्त्वा जायते कृमिलोदरः । श्वमार्जारादिसंस्पृष्टं भुक्त्वा दुर्गंधिमान्भवेत्
By eating food seen by a woman in her period, one is born with worms in the belly; by eating food touched by a dog, cat, or similar, one becomes foul-smelling.
अनिवेद्य सुरादिभ्यो भुंजानो जायते नरः । उदरे रोगवान्दुःखी महारोगप्रपीडितः
A person who eats without offering to the gods and others is born with diseases of the stomach, suffering greatly, afflicted by severe illness.
परान्नविघ्नकरणादजीर्णमभिजायते । मंदोदराग्निर्भवति सति द्रव्ये कदन्नदः
By causing obstacles to another's food, one is born with indigestion; even when possessing wealth, he has weak digestive fire and eats little.
विषदश्छर्दिरोगी स्यान्मार्गहा पादरोगवान् । पिशुनो नरकस्यांते जायते श्वासकासवान्
One who poisons becomes afflicted with vomiting; a thief of the path is born with foot diseases; a slanderer is born at the end of hell, suffering from asthma and cough.
धूर्तोऽपस्माररोगी स्याच्छूली च परतापनः । दावाग्निदायकश्चैव रक्तातीसारवान्भवेत्
A cheat becomes epileptic; one who torments others suffers from colic; one who sets forest fires is born with bloody dysentery.
सुरालये जले वापि शकृत्क्षेपं करोति यः । गुदरोगो भवेत्तस्य पापरूपः सुदारुणः
Whoever defecates in a temple or in water develops a terrible and sinful anal disease.
गर्भपातनजा रोगाः क्षयमेहजलोदराः । प्रतिमा भंगकारी च अप्रतिष्ठश्च जायते
Diseases arising from abortion are consumption, diabetes, and dropsy; one who breaks images is born unstable.
