इत्याज्ञप्ता ययुस्ते वै द्रोणं पर्वतसत्तमम् । यत्रास्ते बलवान्वीरो हनूमान्कपिसत्तमः
Thus commanded, they went to Drona, the best of mountains, where Hanuman, the mighty hero and foremost among monkeys, resided.
गत्वा ते प्राहरन्सर्वे हनूमंतं महाबलम् । हनूमता ते निहता मुष्टिभिः करताडनैः
Having reached there, they all attacked Hanuman, the mighty one; but Hanuman struck them down with fists and blows of his hands.
पतितास्ते क्षणात्तत्र रुधिरक्षतविग्रहाः । अन्ये पलायनपरा जग्मुस्ते त्रिदिवेश्वरम्
They fell there instantly, their bodies wounded and bloodied; others, intent on fleeing, went to the lord of heaven.
तच्छ्रुत्वा कुपितः शक्रः सर्वानमरसत्तमान् । आदिदेश महावीरं वानरेंद्रं सुरोत्तमः
Hearing this, Indra, angered, commanded all the foremost immortals and the great hero, king of the monkeys.
तदाज्ञप्ता ययुस्ते वै यत्र कीशेश्वरो बली । तान्सर्वानागतान्दृष्ट्वा जगाद कपिसत्तमः
Thus ordered, they went to where the powerful lord of monkeys was; seeing them all arrive, the foremost monkey spoke.
मायां तु वीराः समरे संहर्तारं हि मां बलात् । नेष्यामि युष्मानधुना संयमिन्याः पुरोंऽतिके
O heroes, I will, by force, destroy the illusion in battle; now I will lead you before the assembly of the restrainers.
इत्युक्ता अपि ते सर्वे सन्नद्धाः प्राहरन्कपिम् । शस्त्रास्त्रैर्बहुधा मुक्तैर्महाबलसमन्विताः
Even though spoken to thus, they all, fully armed and endowed with great strength, attacked the monkey with many weapons and missiles.
केचिच्छूलैः परशुभिः केचित्खड्गैश्च पट्टिशैः । मुसलैः शक्तिभिः केचित्क्रोधेन कलुषीकृताः
Some with spears and axes, some with swords and pikes, others with clubs and javelins, their minds darkened by wrath.
स आहतोऽमरवरैर्विविधैरायुधैर्बली । शिलाभिस्ताञ्जघानाशु सर्वानमरसत्तमान्
Though struck by the best of the immortals with various weapons, the mighty one swiftly struck down all those foremost gods with rocks.
केचित्पलाय्य आहुस्ते गताः शक्रसमीपकम् । तदुक्तं वाक्यमाकर्ण्य भयं प्राप सुराधिपः
Some, fleeing, went to the presence of Śakra; hearing their words, the lord of the gods was seized by fear.
बृहस्पतिं सुराध्यक्षं मंत्रिणं स्वर्गवासिनाम् । पप्रच्छ सविधे गत्वा नत्वा सुरगुरुं वरम्
The lord of the gods, having gone near and bowed to Bṛhaspati, the chief counselor of the gods dwelling in heaven, questioned him.
इंद्र उवाच। कोऽसौ यो वानरो द्रोणं नेतुं स्वामिन्समागतः । येन मे निहता वीरा अमराः शस्त्रधारिणः
Indra said: Who is this monkey who has come to lead Droṇa, by whom my heroic, weapon-bearing immortals have been slain?
शेष उवाच। एतच्छ्रुत्वा तु तद्वाक्यमुक्तमांगिरसो महान् । जगाद भयसंविग्नं तुरासाहं सुराधिपम्
Śeṣa said: Hearing these words, the great son of Aṅgiras spoke to the terrified lord of the gods, Turāsāha.
बृहस्पतिरुवाच। यो रावणमहन्संख्ये कुंभकर्णमदीदहत् । येन ते वैरिणः सर्वे हतास्तस्यैव सेवकः
Bṛhaspati said: He who slew Rāvaṇa in battle and burned Kumbhakarṇa, by whom all your enemies were destroyed—he is the servant of that one.
येन लंका सत्रिकूटा निर्दग्धा पुच्छवह्निना । अक्षश्च निहतो येन हनूमंतमवेहि तम्
By whom Laṅkā, with its three peaks, was burned with the fire of his tail, and by whom Akṣa was slain—know him to be Hanuman.
तेन सर्वे विनिहता द्रोणार्थमयमुद्यतः । हयमेधं महाराजः करोति बलिसत्तमः
By him all have been slain, intent on Droṇa's sake; the great king, foremost among the strong, is performing the Aśvamedha sacrifice.
तस्याश्वं शिवभक्तस्तु नृपो वीरमणिर्महान् । जहार तत्र समभूद्रणं सुरविमोहनम्
His horse was seized there by the great king Vīramaṇi, devoted to Śiva; then a wondrous battle, bewildering to the gods, took place.
शिवेन निहताः संख्ये वीरा रामस्य भूरिशः । तान्वै जीवयितुं द्रोणं नेष्यत्येव महाबलः
By Śiva, many of Rāma's heroes were slain in battle; to revive them, the mighty Hanuman will surely bring Droṇa.
नायं वर्षशतैर्जेयो भवता बलसंयुतः । तस्मात्प्रसादय कपिं देहि तत्रत्यमौषधम्
He cannot be conquered by you, even in a hundred years, though endowed with strength; therefore, appease the monkey and give him the medicine from there.
शेष उवाच। आगतं वीक्ष्य श्रीरामं शत्रुघ्नः प्रणतार्तिहम् । भ्रातरं सकलाद्दुःखान्मुक्तोऽभूद्द्विजसत्तम
Śeṣa said: Seeing Śrī Rāma, the remover of his devotees' distress, having arrived, Śatrughna, freed from all sorrows, rejoiced with his brother, O best of twice-born.
हनूमान्वीक्ष्य विभ्रांतो रामस्य चरणौ मुदा । ववंदे भक्तरक्षार्थमागतं निजगाद च
Seeing Hanuman, bewildered, joyfully bowing at Rāma's feet, who had come for the protection of his devotee, he spoke.
स्वामिंस्तवैतद्युक्तं तु स्वभक्तपरिपालनम् । यत्संग्रामे जितं सर्वं पाशबद्धममोचयः
Lord, it is fitting for you to protect your devotees; for in battle, you conquered all and released those bound by the noose.
वयं त्विदानीं धन्या वै यद्द्रक्ष्यामो भवत्पदे । जेष्यामोऽरीन्क्षणादेव त्वत्कृपातो रघूद्वह
Now we are truly blessed, for we shall see your feet; by your grace, O descendant of Raghu, we shall instantly conquer our enemies.
शेष उवाच। स्थाणुस्तदागतं रामं योगिनां ध्यानगोचरम् । पतित्वा पादयोर्विप्र जगाद प्रणताभयम्
Śeṣa said: Then Sthāṇu, perceivable to yogis in meditation, approached Rāma and, falling at his feet, spoke words that remove the fear of the devoted.
एकस्त्वं पुरुषः साक्षात्प्रकृतेः पर ईर्यसे । यः स्वांशकलया विश्वं सृजस्यवसि हंसि च
You alone are the true Person, declared to be beyond nature; by your own portion and power, you create, sustain, and destroy the universe.
अरूपस्त्वमशेषस्य जगतः कारणं परम् । एक एव त्रिधारूपं गृह्णासि कुहकान्वितः
You are formless, the supreme cause of all that exists; yet, through illusion, you alone assume three forms.
सृष्टौ विधातृरूपेण पालने स्वयमास च । प्रलये जगतः साक्षादहं शर्वाख्यतां गतः
At creation, I take the form of the Creator; in preservation, I act myself; and at the dissolution of the world, I directly assume the name Sharva.
तव यत्परमेशस्य हयमेधक्रतुक्रिया । ब्रह्महत्यापनोदाय तद्विडंबनमद्भुतम्
That remarkable act of yours, O Supreme Lord, the horse-sacrifice ritual, was performed to remove the sin of killing a Brahmin.
यत्पादशौचममलं गंगाख्यं शिरसोंऽतरा । वहामि पापशांत्यर्थं तस्य ते पातकं कुतः
The pure water called Ganga, which is the sanctity of your feet, I bear upon my head for the purpose of pacifying sins; how then could any sin remain for you?
मया बह्वपकाराय कृतं कर्म तव स्फुटम् । क्षम्यतां तत्कृपालो हि भवतो व्यवधायकम्
I have clearly committed many offenses against you; let them be forgiven, O compassionate one, for they stand as obstacles between us.
