कपे त्वया महत्कर्म कृतं यद्भटपातनम् । क्षणं तिष्ठसि चेत्कुर्वे तव प्राणवियोजनम्
Monkey, you have performed a great deed, the destruction of warriors; if you stand for a moment, I will sever your life.
एवमुक्त्वा हनूमंतं प्रजघान स दुर्मतिः । त्रिशूलेन सुतीक्ष्णेन ज्वलत्पावककांतिना
Having spoken thus to Hanuman, that wicked one struck him with a very sharp trident, blazing like fire.
तदागतं त्रिशूलं च मुखे जग्राह वीर्यवान् । चूर्णयामास सकलं सर्वलोहविनिर्मितम्
Hanuman, mighty in strength, caught the incoming trident in his mouth and crushed it completely, though it was made of all metals.
चूर्णयित्वा त्रिशूलं तदायसं दैत्यमोचितम् । जघान तं चपेटाभिर्बह्वीभिर्हनुमान्बली
Having pulverized the iron trident released by the demon, Hanuman, powerful, struck him with many slaps.
स आहतः कपीन्द्रेण चपेटाभिरितस्ततः । व्यथितो व्यसृजन्मायां सर्वलोकभयंकरीम्
Struck here and there by the king of monkeys’ slaps, the demon, distressed, unleashed a magic causing terror to all worlds.
तदा तमोभवत्तीव्रं यत्र को वा न लक्ष्यते । यत्र स्वीयो न पारक्यो विदामास जनान्बहून्
Then a dense darkness arose, where none could be seen; where one could not distinguish friend from foe, and many people were confused.
शिलाः पर्वतशृंगाभाः पतंति सुभटोपरि । ताभिर्हतास्तु ते सर्वे व्याकुला अथ जज्ञिरे
Stones, like mountain peaks, fell upon the warriors; struck by them, all were thrown into confusion.
विद्युतो विलसंत्यत्र गर्जंति जलदा घनम् । वर्षंति पूयरुधिरं मुंचंति समलं जलम्
Lightning flashed there, clouds thundered loudly, they rained pus and blood, and poured forth filthy water.
आकाशात्पतमानानि कबंधानि बहूनि च । दृश्यंते छिन्नशीर्षाणि सकुंडलयुतानि च
Many headless bodies fell from the sky, some with earrings still attached, visible as they descended.
नग्ना विरूपाः सुभृशं कीर्णकेशाः सुदुर्मुखाः । दृश्यंते सर्वतो दैत्या दारुणा भयकारिणः
Naked, deformed, terribly disfigured, hair scattered, faces hideous—such dreadful, fearsome demons were seen everywhere.
तदा व्याकुलिता लोकाः परस्परभयाकुलाः । पलायनपरा जाता महोत्पातममंसत
Then the people became agitated, overwhelmed by mutual fear, intent on fleeing, and regarded it as a great calamity.
तदा शत्रुघ्न आयातो रथे स्थित्वा महायशाः । श्रीरामस्मरणं कृत्वा चापे संधाय सायकान्
Then Shatrughna arrived, of great fame, standing in his chariot; remembering Shri Rama, he fitted arrows to his bow.
तां मायां स विधूयाथ मोहनास्त्रेण वीर्यवान् । शरधाराः किरन्व्योम्नि ववर्ष समरेसुरम्
Then, that mighty one dispelled the illusion with the weapon of delusion, and rained down streams of arrows in the sky upon the battlefield.
तदादिशः प्रसेदुस्ता रविस्त्वपरिवेषवान् । मेघा यथागतं याता विद्युतः शांतिमागताः
At that moment, the directions became clear; the sun, encircled by its halo, shone forth, and the clouds departed as they had come, the lightning returning to calm.
तदा विमानं पुरतो दृश्यते राक्षसैर्युतम् । छिंधि भिंधीति भाषाभिर्व्याकुलं सुतरां महत्
Then, before them appeared a great aerial chariot crowded with rakshasas, tumultuous with shouts of 'Cut! Pierce!' and filled with great confusion.
बाणाश्च शतसाहस्राः स्वर्णपुंखैश्च शोभिताः । पेतुर्विमाने नभसि स्थिते कामगमे मुहुः
Hundreds of thousands of arrows, adorned with golden feathers, fell repeatedly upon the aerial chariot, which stood in the sky, moving at will.
तदा भग्नं विमानं हि दृश्यते न तदुच्चकैः । स्वपुरी खण्डमेकत्र भग्नांगमिव भूतले
Then, the broken aerial chariot was seen no longer high above, but in its own city, shattered in one place like a body with broken limbs on the earth.
तदा प्रकुपितो दैत्यो बाणान्धनुषि संदधे । तैर्बाणैर्विकिरन्रामभ्रातरं चाभिगर्जितः
Then, the enraged demon fitted arrows to his bow and, roaring, showered those arrows upon Rama's brother.
ते बाणाः शतशस्तस्य लग्ना वपुषि भूरिशः । शोभामापुः शोणितौघान्वहंतस्तीक्ष्णवक्त्रिणः
Those arrows, by the hundreds, struck his body repeatedly, their sharp points carrying streams of blood, and they shone brilliantly.
शत्रुघ्नः परया शक्त्या संयुक्तो वायुदैवतम् । अस्त्रं धनुषि चाधत्त राक्षसानां प्रकम्पनम्
Shatrughna, endowed with a supreme spear empowered by the wind-god, set upon his bow a weapon that would shake the rakshasas.
तेनास्त्रेण विमानात्खात्पतन्तो मुक्तमूर्धजाः । दृश्यंते भूतवेतालसंघा इव नभश्चराः
By that weapon, rakshasas fell from the aerial chariot, their hair disheveled, appearing like hosts of spirits and goblins moving through the sky.
तदस्त्रं रघुनाथस्य भ्रात्रा मुक्तं विलोक्य सः । अस्त्रं च पाशुपत्यं स चापे धाद्दनुजात्मजः
Seeing that weapon released by Shatrughna, the son of Raghu, his adversary then placed the Pashupata weapon upon his bow.
ततः प्रवृत्ता वेताला भूताः प्रेतनिशाचराः । कपालकर्तरीयुक्ताः पिबन्तः शोणितं बहु
Then, spirits, ghosts, and night-wandering demons appeared, adorned with skulls and cleavers, drinking copious blood.
ते वै शत्रुघ्नवीराणां रुधिराणि पपुर्मुदा । जीवतामपि दुर्वाराः कर्तरीपाणिशोभिताः
Those beings joyfully drank the blood of Shatrughna's heroes, irresistible even among the living, their hands shining with cleavers.
तदस्त्रं व्याप्नुवद्दृष्ट्वा सर्ववीरप्रभंजनम् । मुमोच तन्निरासाय चास्त्रं नारायणाभिधम्
Seeing that weapon enveloping all and destroying the valor of every hero, he released the weapon known as Narayana to dispel it.
नारायणास्त्रं तान्सर्वान्वारयामास तत्क्षणात् । ते सर्वे विलयं प्रापुर्निशाचरप्रणोदिताः
The Narayana weapon immediately repelled all those beings, and all the night-wandering demons vanished at once.
तदा क्रुद्धो निशाचारी विद्युन्माली समाददे । त्रिशूलं निशितं घोरं शत्रुघ्नं हंतुमुल्बणम्
Then, the enraged night-wanderer Vidyunmali seized a sharp, terrible trident, intent on killing Shatrughna.
शूलहस्तं समायांतं विद्युन्मालिनमाहवे । सायकैः प्राहरत्तस्य भुजे त्वर्धशशिप्रभैः
As Vidyunmali, holding the trident, approached in battle, Shatrughna struck his arm with arrows shining like half-moons.
तैर्बाणैश्छिन्नहस्तः स शिरसा हंतुमुद्यतः । हतोसि याहि शत्रुघ्न कस्त्वां त्राता भविष्यति
His arm severed by those arrows, he prepared to strike with his head, saying, 'You are slain, go now, Shatrughna! Who will save you?
इति ब्रुवाणं तरसा चिच्छेद शितसायकैः । मस्तकं तस्य बलिनः शूरस्य सह कुंडलम्
As he spoke thus, Shatrughna swiftly cut off the head of that mighty, heroic one, along with his earrings, with sharp arrows.
