उग्रदंष्ट्रेण वै दृष्टः पतमानो निजाग्रजः । गृहीत्वा तं विमानांतर्निनाय रिपुशंकितः
Seeing his own elder brother falling, with fierce fangs, he seized him and, suspecting an enemy, carried him inside the chariot.
प्राह चारिं महारोषात्पुष्कलं बलिनां वरम् । मद्भ्रातरं पातयित्वा कुत्र यास्यसि दुर्मते
Then, in great wrath, he addressed his foe, Puṣkala, best of the mighty: 'After casting down my brother, where will you go, wicked-minded one?'
मां वै युधि विनिर्जित्य गंतासि जयमुत्तमम् । स्थिते मयि तव स्वांते जयाशा विनिवर्त्य ताम्
'Only after conquering me in battle will you attain supreme victory; as long as I stand before you, abandon your hope of triumph.'
एवं ब्रुवंतं तरसा जघान दशभिः शरैः । हृदये तस्य दुष्टस्य रोषपूरितलोचनः
As he spoke thus, his eyes filled with anger, he swiftly struck that wicked one in the heart with ten arrows.
स ताडितो दशशरैः पुष्कलेन महात्मना । चुक्रोध हृदि दुर्बुद्धिस्तं हंतुमुपचक्रमे
Struck by ten arrows from the great-souled Puṣkala, the evil-minded one grew furious at heart and prepared to slay him.
दंतान्निष्पिष्य सक्रोधो मुष्टिमुद्यम्य चाहनत् । व्यनदद्वज्रनिर्घातपातशंकां सृजन्हृदि
Grinding his teeth in rage, raising his fist, he struck him, producing a sound that seemed to threaten a thunderbolt's crash in his heart.
मुष्टिनाभिहतो वीरः पुष्कलः परमास्त्रवित् । नाकंपत विनिष्पेषं वांछंस्तस्य दुरात्मनः
Though struck with the fist, Puṣkala, the valiant knower of supreme weapons, did not waver, desiring to crush that evil one.
वत्सदंतान्महातीक्ष्णान्मुमोच हृदि सायकान् । तैर्बाणैर्व्यथितो दैत्यस्त्रिशूलं तु समाददे
He released arrows, sharp as a calf's teeth, into his heart; tormented by those arrows, the demon seized his trident.
जाज्वल्यमानं त्रिशिखं ज्वालामालातिभीषणम् । लग्नं हृदि महावीर पुष्कलस्य तु दारुणम्
Blazing, three-pronged, wreathed in terrifying flames, that dreadful trident struck the great hero Puṣkala in the heart.
मूर्च्छितस्तेन शूलेन निहतो धन्विसत्तमः । कश्मलं परमं प्राप्तः पपात स्यंदनोपरि
Struck by that trident, the best of archers fell unconscious, overcome by utter distress, collapsing upon his chariot.
मूर्च्छां प्राप्तं तमाज्ञाय हनूमान्पवनात्मजः । कोपव्याकुलितस्वांतो बभाषे तं तु राक्षसम्
Seeing him fallen into a swoon, Hanuman, son of the wind, his heart agitated with wrath, addressed that demon.
कुत्र गच्छसि दुर्बुद्धे मयि योद्धरि संस्थिते । त्वां हन्मि चरणाघातैर्वाजिहर्तारमागतम्
'Where do you flee, evil-minded one, while I, Hanuman, stand ready for battle? I will slay you, thief of horses, with blows of my feet.'
एवमुक्त्वा महादैत्याञ्जघान परसैनिकान् । विमानस्थान्नखाग्रेण दारयन्नभसि स्थितः
Having spoken thus, he struck the great demons and other enemy soldiers, tearing them from the sky with the tips of his nails while standing in the air.
लांगूलेनाहताः केचित्केचित्पादतला हताः । बाहुभ्यां दारिताः केचित्पवनस्य तनूभुवा
Some were struck by his tail, some by the soles of his feet, and some were torn apart by the arms of the wind-god's son.
नश्यंति केचिन्निहताः केचिन्मूर्च्छंति संहताः । पलायंते पदाघातभयपीडाहतास्ततः
Some are destroyed, some are struck down, some faint together; others flee, afflicted by the fear and pain of Hanuman’s blows.
अनेके निहतास्तत्र राक्षसाश्चातिदारुणाः । छिन्ना भिन्ना द्विधा जाताः पवनस्य सुतेन वै
Many fierce rakshasas were slain there, cut, broken, split in two by the son of the wind.
कामगंतुविमानं तद्भिन्नप्राकारतोरणम् । हाहा कुर्वद्भिरसुरैः समंतात्परिवारितम्
That celestial chariot, with its gates and ramparts shattered, was surrounded on all sides by asuras crying out in distress.
हनूमति महाशूरे क्षणं भूमौ क्षणं दिवि । इतस्ततः प्रदृश्येत कामयानं दुरासदम्
Hanuman, the great hero, was seen for a moment on the ground, a moment in the sky, moving here and there, desiring battle, impossible to approach.
यत्रयत्र विमानं तत्तत्रतत्र समीरजः । प्रहरन्नेव दृश्येत कामरूपधरः कपिः
Wherever the chariot went, there the son of the wind appeared to strike, the monkey assuming any form at will.
एवं तदाकुलीभूते विमानस्थे महाजने । उग्रदंष्ट्रस्तु दैत्येंद्रो हनूमंतमुपेयिवान्
As the crowd in the chariot became agitated, the fierce-fanged lord of the daityas approached Hanuman.
कपे त्वया महत्कर्म कृतं यद्भटपातनम् । क्षणं तिष्ठसि चेत्कुर्वे तव प्राणवियोजनम्
Monkey, you have performed a great deed, the destruction of warriors; if you stand for a moment, I will sever your life.
एवमुक्त्वा हनूमंतं प्रजघान स दुर्मतिः । त्रिशूलेन सुतीक्ष्णेन ज्वलत्पावककांतिना
Having spoken thus to Hanuman, that wicked one struck him with a very sharp trident, blazing like fire.
तदागतं त्रिशूलं च मुखे जग्राह वीर्यवान् । चूर्णयामास सकलं सर्वलोहविनिर्मितम्
Hanuman, mighty in strength, caught the incoming trident in his mouth and crushed it completely, though it was made of all metals.
चूर्णयित्वा त्रिशूलं तदायसं दैत्यमोचितम् । जघान तं चपेटाभिर्बह्वीभिर्हनुमान्बली
Having pulverized the iron trident released by the demon, Hanuman, powerful, struck him with many slaps.
स आहतः कपीन्द्रेण चपेटाभिरितस्ततः । व्यथितो व्यसृजन्मायां सर्वलोकभयंकरीम्
Struck here and there by the king of monkeys’ slaps, the demon, distressed, unleashed a magic causing terror to all worlds.
तदा तमोभवत्तीव्रं यत्र को वा न लक्ष्यते । यत्र स्वीयो न पारक्यो विदामास जनान्बहून्
Then a dense darkness arose, where none could be seen; where one could not distinguish friend from foe, and many people were confused.
शिलाः पर्वतशृंगाभाः पतंति सुभटोपरि । ताभिर्हतास्तु ते सर्वे व्याकुला अथ जज्ञिरे
Stones, like mountain peaks, fell upon the warriors; struck by them, all were thrown into confusion.
विद्युतो विलसंत्यत्र गर्जंति जलदा घनम् । वर्षंति पूयरुधिरं मुंचंति समलं जलम्
Lightning flashed there, clouds thundered loudly, they rained pus and blood, and poured forth filthy water.
आकाशात्पतमानानि कबंधानि बहूनि च । दृश्यंते छिन्नशीर्षाणि सकुंडलयुतानि च
Many headless bodies fell from the sky, some with earrings still attached, visible as they descended.
नग्ना विरूपाः सुभृशं कीर्णकेशाः सुदुर्मुखाः । दृश्यंते सर्वतो दैत्या दारुणा भयकारिणः
Naked, deformed, terribly disfigured, hair scattered, faces hideous—such dreadful, fearsome demons were seen everywhere.
