दुकूलवस्त्रसहितां दिव्यमालानुलेपनाम् । तां दृष्ट्वा देवदेवस्य प्रियां सर्वे दिवौकसः
Clad in silk garments, adorned with divine garlands and unguents; seeing her, beloved of the lord of gods, all the celestial beings—
ऊचुः प्रांजलयो देवीं प्रसन्नं कुरुते प्रियम् । त्रैलोक्यस्याभयं स्वामी यथा दद्यात्तथा कुरु
Spoke with joined palms to the goddess: 'Be gracious and do what is pleasing; grant fearlessness to the three worlds, O Lady, as the Lord would give—so do.'
रुद्र उवाच- इत्युक्ता सहसा देवी प्रियं प्राप्य जनार्दनम् । प्रणिपत्य नमस्कृत्य प्रसीदेति उवाच तम्
Rudra said: Thus addressed, the goddess, having suddenly found her beloved Janardana, bowed down, offered her respects, and said to him, 'Be gracious.'
तां दृष्ट्वा महिषीं स्वस्य प्रियां सर्व्वेश्वरो हरिः । रक्षःशरीरजं क्रोधं तत्याज प्रीतवत्क्षणात्
Seeing his own beloved queen, Hari, the Lord of all, at once abandoned the anger that had arisen in his body from the demon, and became pleased.
अंकमादाय तां देवीं समाश्लिष्य दयानिधिः । कृपासुधार्द्रदृष्ट्या वै निरैक्षत सुरान्हरिः
Taking the goddess onto his lap, the ocean of compassion embraced her, and with eyes softened by a stream of mercy, Hari looked upon the gods.
ततो जयजयेत्युच्चैः स्तुवतां नमतां तदा । तद्दयादृष्टिदृष्टानां सानंदः संभ्रमोऽभवत्
Then, as those who praised and bowed to him loudly cried 'Victory! Victory!', joy and excitement arose in those upon whom his merciful gaze fell.
ततो देवगणाः सर्वे हर्षनिर्भरमानसाः । ऊचुः प्रांजलयो देवं नमस्कृत्य जगत्पतिम्
Then all the hosts of gods, their minds overflowing with delight, joined their palms, bowed to the Lord of the universe, and spoke.
देवगणा ऊचुः - द्रष्टुमत्यद्भुतं तेजो न शक्तास्ते जगत्पते । अत्यद्भुतमिदं रूपं बहुबाहुपदांकितम्
The hosts of gods said: 'O Lord of the universe, we are unable to behold your most wondrous radiance; this form, marked by many arms and feet, is truly astonishing.'
जगत्त्रयसमाक्रांतं तेजस्तीक्ष्णतरं तव । द्रष्टुं स्थातुं न शक्ताः स्मः सर्व्व एव दिवौकसः
'Your radiance, sharper than fire, pervades the three worlds; none of us dwellers of heaven are able to look upon it or even stand before it.'
महादेव उवाच-। इत्यर्थितस्तु विबुधैस्तेजस्तदतिभीषणम् । उपसंहृत्य देवेशो बभूव सुखदर्शनः
Mahadeva said: Thus requested by the gods, the Lord of the gods withdrew that exceedingly terrifying radiance and became pleasing to behold.
शरत्कोटींदुसंकाशः पुंडरीकनिभेक्षणः । सुधामय सटापुंज विद्युत्कोटिनिभः शुभः
He shone like ten million autumn moons, with eyes like lotuses, his mane made of nectar, resplendent like ten million flashes of lightning, and auspicious.
नानारत्नमयैर्दिव्यैः केयूरैः कटकान्वितैः । बाहुभिः कल्पवृक्षस्य शाखौघैरिव सत्फलैः
With divine armlets and bracelets made of various precious gems, his arms resembled the fruitful branches of the wish-fulfilling tree.
चतुर्भिः कोमलैर्दिव्यैरन्वितः परमेश्वरः । जपाकुसुमसंकाशैः शोभितः करपंकजैः
The supreme Lord was adorned with four soft, divine arms, beautified by lotus-like hands resembling hibiscus flowers.
शंखचक्रगृहीताभ्यामुद्बाहुभ्यां विराजितः । वरदाभयहस्ताभ्यामितराभ्यां नृकेसरी
He was radiant with two raised arms holding the conch and discus, and with the other two, bestowing boons and fearlessness, the Man-Lion shone.
श्रीवत्सकौस्तुभोरस्को वनमालाविभूषितः । उद्यद्दिनकाराभ्यां च कुण्डलाभ्यां विराजितः
His chest was adorned with the Srivatsa and Kaustubha jewels, decorated with a garland of forest flowers, and he was splendid with earrings like the rising sun and moon.
हारकेयूरकटकैर्भूषणैः समलंकृतः । सव्यांगस्थ श्रियायुक्तो राजते नरकेसरी
He was beautifully adorned with necklaces, armlets, and bracelets, united with Lakshmi on his left side, shining as the Man-Lion.
लक्ष्मीनृसिंहं तं दृष्ट्वा देवताः समहर्षयः । आनन्दाश्रुजलैः सिक्ता हर्षनिर्भरचेतसः
Seeing that Lakshmi-Narasimha, the gods were filled with great joy, their hearts overwhelmed with happiness, and their eyes wet with tears of bliss.
आनंदसिंधुमग्नास्ते नमश्चक्रुर्निरंतरम् । अर्चयामासुरात्मेशं दिव्यपुष्पसमर्पणैः
Immersed in an ocean of joy, they continually bowed down and worshipped the Lord of their souls with offerings of divine flowers.
रत्नकुंभैः सुधापूर्णैरभिषिच्य सनातनम् । वस्त्रैराभरणैर्गंधैः पुष्पैर्धूपैर्म्मनोरमैः
They anointed the Eternal One with jewel-filled pitchers brimming with nectar, and with delightful garments, ornaments, fragrances, flowers, and incense.
दिव्यैर्निवेदितैर्दीपैरर्च्चयित्वा नृकेसरिम् । तुष्टुवुः स्तवनैर्दिव्यैर्नमश्चक्रुर्म्मुहुर्म्महुः
Having worshipped the Man-Lion with divine lamps and offerings, they praised him with celestial hymns and bowed again and again.
ततः प्रसन्नो लक्ष्मीशस्तेषामिष्टान्वरान्ददौ । ततो देवगणैः सार्धं सर्व्वेशो भक्तवत्सलः
Then, pleased, the Lord of Lakshmi granted them their desired boons; thereafter, the Lord of all, compassionate to his devotees, together with the hosts of gods—
प्रह्लादं सर्वदैत्यानां चक्रे राजानमव्ययम् । आश्वास्य भक्तं प्रह्लादमभिषिच्य सुरोत्तमैः
—made Prahlada, among all the demons, the imperishable king; comforting his devotee Prahlada, he anointed him with the foremost gods.
ददौ तस्मै वरानिष्टान्भक्तिं चाव्यभिचारिणीम् । ततो देवगणैः सर्वैः स्तूयमानो नृकेसरी
He gave him the desired boons and unwavering devotion; then, praised by all the hosts of gods, the Lion-Man—
विकीर्णपुष्पवपुभिस्तत्रैवांतरधीयत । ततः सुरगणाः सर्वे स्वंस्वं स्थानं प्रपेदिरे
—vanished there, his form showered with flowers; then all the hosts of gods returned to their own places.
पुनश्च यज्ञभागान्स्वान्बुभुजुः प्रीतमानसाः । ततो देवाः सगंधर्वा निरातंकाभवंस्तदा
Again, with joyful hearts, they enjoyed their own shares of the sacrifices; then the gods, together with the Gandharvas, became free from fear.
तस्मिन्हते महादैत्ये सर्व एव प्रहर्षिताः । प्रह्लादस्तु तदा चक्रे राज्यं धर्मेण वैष्णवः
With that great demon slain, all were filled with delight; Prahlada then ruled as king, upholding the Vaishnava dharma.
हरेः प्रसादाल्लब्धं तु राज्यं वैष्णवसत्तमः । बहुभिर्यज्ञदानाद्यैरर्चयित्वा नृकेसरिम्
By the grace of Hari, the foremost Vaishnava obtained the kingdom; worshipping the Lion-Man with many sacrifices, gifts, and the like—
काले हरिपदं प्राप योगिगम्यं सनातनम् । एतत्प्रह्लादचरितं ये तु शृण्वंति नित्यशः
—in time, he attained the eternal abode of Hari, accessible to yogis; those who listen daily to this story of Prahlada—
ते सर्वेपापनिर्मुक्ता यास्यंति परमां गतिम् । एतत्ते कथितं देवि नृसिंहं वैभवं हरेः । शेषां च वैभवावस्थां शृणु देवि यथाक्रमम्
—all become freed from sin and reach the supreme state; thus, O Devi, I have told you the glory of Narasimha, Hari; now hear, O Devi, the remaining states of his majesty, in order.
इति श्रीपाद्मे महापुराणे पंचपंचाशत्साहस्र्यां सहिंतायामुत्तरखंडे उमामहेश्वरसंवादे नृसिंहप्रादुर्भावोनामाष्टत्रिंशदधिकद्विशततमोऽध्यायः
Thus ends the two hundred and thirty-eighth chapter, called 'The Appearance of Narasimha,' in the dialogue between Uma and Maheshvara, in the Uttarakanda of the glorious Padma Mahapurana, comprising fifty-five thousand verses.
