आदित्या वसवो रुद्रा विश्वेदेवा मरुद्गणाः । सर्वाङ्गेषु प्रदृश्यंते गंधर्वाप्सरसश्च ये
The Adityas, Vasus, Rudras, all the gods, and the hosts of Maruts; on all his limbs were seen gandharvas and apsaras.
इत्थं विभूतयस्तस्य दृश्यंते परमात्मनः । श्रीवत्सकौस्तुभोरस्कं वनमालाविभूषितम्
Thus, these manifestations of the Supreme Self were seen; his chest was adorned with the Srivatsa and Kaustubha, and with a garland of forest flowers.
शंखचक्रगदाखङ्ग शार्ङ्गाद्यैर्हेतिभिर्युतम् । सर्वोपनिषदामर्थं दृष्ट्वा दैत्येश्वरात्मजः
He was equipped with the conch, discus, mace, sword, bow Sharnga, and other weapons; seeing the essence of all the Upanishads, the son of the Daitya lord—
हर्षाश्रुजलसिक्तांगः प्रणनाम मुहुर्मुहुः । दैत्येंद्रस्तु हरिं दृष्ट्वा क्रोधान्मृत्युवशे स्थितः
With his body bathed in tears of joy, bowed again and again; but the king of the Daityas, seeing Hari, stood overcome by death in his wrath.
योद्धुं खङ्गं समुद्यम्य नृसिंहं तमभिद्रवत् । अथ दैत्यगणाः सर्व्वे लब्धसंज्ञा महाबलाः
Raising his sword to fight, he charged at Narasimha; then all the mighty hosts of demons, regaining consciousness, advanced.
स्वान्यायुधानि चादाय हरिं जघ्नुस्त्वरान्विताः । पलालकाण्डानि यथा वह्नौ क्षिप्तान्यनेकशः
Taking up their own weapons, they attacked Hari with haste, just as stalks of straw are cast into fire in countless numbers.
तथैव भस्मतां यांति महास्त्राणि हरेस्तनौ । तान्यनीकानि दैत्यानां दृष्ट्वा नरहरिस्तदा
In the same way, the mighty weapons turned to ashes upon Hari's body; seeing the armies of demons thus, Narasimha at that moment—
सटैर्ददाह च ज्वालामालाविरचित स्फुटैः । नृकेसरि सटोद्भूतवह्निना दानवा भृशम्
With his mane, he scorched them with blazing streams of flame; the lion-man burned the demons intensely with fire issuing from his mane.
निर्भस्मिता गणाः सर्वे निःशेषं तदभूद्बलम् । प्रह्लादं सानुगं हित्वा भस्मिते वीक्ष्य तद्बले
All the hosts were utterly reduced to ashes, their strength annihilated; leaving Prahlada and his followers unharmed, he saw the demon forces destroyed.
क्रोधाद्दैत्यपतिः खङ्गमाकृष्याभिप्रपद्यत । खङ्गहस्तं तु दैत्येंद्रं जग्राहैकेन बाहुना
Out of anger, the demon king drew his sword and rushed forward; but Narasimha seized the sword-wielding demon lord with one arm.
पातयामास देवेशो यथा शाखां महानिलः । गृहीत्वा पतितं भूमौ महाकायं नृकेसरी
The lord of the gods cast him down as a great wind fells a branch; Narasimha, having seized the fallen, massive-bodied demon,
स्वोत्संगे स्थापयामास ददर्शासौ मुखं हरेः । विष्णुनिंदाकृतंपापंतथावैष्णवदोषजम्
Placed him upon his own lap and gazed at the face of Hari; he saw the sinful act committed against Vishnu, the offense against the Vaishnava.
नृसिंहस्पर्शनादेवनिर्भस्मितमभूत्तदा । अथदैत्येश्वरस्याथमहद्गात्रंनृकेसरी
By the touch of Narasimha, he was instantly reduced to ashes; then the lion-man, seeing the demon king's vast body,
नखेर्विदारयामासतीक्ष्णैर्वज्रनिभैर्घनैः । सनिर्म्मलात्मादैत्येंद्र पःश्यन्साक्षान्मुखं हरेः
Tore it apart with his sharp, thunderbolt-like claws; the demon king, pure in soul, gazed directly at Hari's face.
नखनिर्भिन्नहृदयः कृतार्थो विजहावसून् । तद्गात्रं शतधा भित्त्वा नखैस्तीक्ष्णैर्महाहरिः
His heart pierced by the claws, his purpose fulfilled, he relinquished his life; Mahahari, having split the body into a hundred pieces with sharp claws,
आकृष्यांत्राणि दीर्घाणि कंठे संसक्तवान्प्रियान् । अथ देवगणाः सर्व्वे मुनयश्च तपोधनाः
Pulled out the long entrails and draped them around his neck as ornaments; then all the hosts of gods and ascetic sages,
ब्रह्मरुद्रौ पुरस्कृत्य शनैः स्तोतुं समाययुः । ते प्रसादयितुं भीता ज्वलंतं विश्वतोमुखम्
Led by Brahma and Rudra, slowly approached to praise him; fearful, they sought to appease the blazing, all-faced one.
मातरं जगतां धात्रीं चिंतयामासुरीश्वरीम् । हिरण्यवर्णां हरिणीं सर्व्वोपद्रवनाशिनीम्
They contemplated the Mother, the sustainer of the worlds, the divine Lady; golden-hued, deer-like, destroyer of all calamities.
विष्णोर्नित्यानवद्यांगीं ध्यात्वा नारायणीं शुभाम् । देवीसूक्तजपैर्भक्त्या नमश्चक्रुः सनातनीम्
Meditating upon Narayani, eternally flawless in form, consort of Vishnu, auspicious; with recitations of the Devi Sukta and devotion, they offered salutations to the eternal one.
तैश्चिंत्यमाना सा देवी तत्रैवाविरभूत्तदा । चतुर्भुजा विशालाक्षी सर्वाभरणभूषिता
As she was thus contemplated, the goddess appeared there at that moment; four-armed, wide-eyed, adorned with every ornament.
दुकूलवस्त्रसहितां दिव्यमालानुलेपनाम् । तां दृष्ट्वा देवदेवस्य प्रियां सर्वे दिवौकसः
Clad in silk garments, adorned with divine garlands and unguents; seeing her, beloved of the lord of gods, all the celestial beings—
ऊचुः प्रांजलयो देवीं प्रसन्नं कुरुते प्रियम् । त्रैलोक्यस्याभयं स्वामी यथा दद्यात्तथा कुरु
Spoke with joined palms to the goddess: 'Be gracious and do what is pleasing; grant fearlessness to the three worlds, O Lady, as the Lord would give—so do.'
रुद्र उवाच- इत्युक्ता सहसा देवी प्रियं प्राप्य जनार्दनम् । प्रणिपत्य नमस्कृत्य प्रसीदेति उवाच तम्
Rudra said: Thus addressed, the goddess, having suddenly found her beloved Janardana, bowed down, offered her respects, and said to him, 'Be gracious.'
तां दृष्ट्वा महिषीं स्वस्य प्रियां सर्व्वेश्वरो हरिः । रक्षःशरीरजं क्रोधं तत्याज प्रीतवत्क्षणात्
Seeing his own beloved queen, Hari, the Lord of all, at once abandoned the anger that had arisen in his body from the demon, and became pleased.
अंकमादाय तां देवीं समाश्लिष्य दयानिधिः । कृपासुधार्द्रदृष्ट्या वै निरैक्षत सुरान्हरिः
Taking the goddess onto his lap, the ocean of compassion embraced her, and with eyes softened by a stream of mercy, Hari looked upon the gods.
ततो जयजयेत्युच्चैः स्तुवतां नमतां तदा । तद्दयादृष्टिदृष्टानां सानंदः संभ्रमोऽभवत्
Then, as those who praised and bowed to him loudly cried 'Victory! Victory!', joy and excitement arose in those upon whom his merciful gaze fell.
ततो देवगणाः सर्वे हर्षनिर्भरमानसाः । ऊचुः प्रांजलयो देवं नमस्कृत्य जगत्पतिम्
Then all the hosts of gods, their minds overflowing with delight, joined their palms, bowed to the Lord of the universe, and spoke.
देवगणा ऊचुः - द्रष्टुमत्यद्भुतं तेजो न शक्तास्ते जगत्पते । अत्यद्भुतमिदं रूपं बहुबाहुपदांकितम्
The hosts of gods said: 'O Lord of the universe, we are unable to behold your most wondrous radiance; this form, marked by many arms and feet, is truly astonishing.'
जगत्त्रयसमाक्रांतं तेजस्तीक्ष्णतरं तव । द्रष्टुं स्थातुं न शक्ताः स्मः सर्व्व एव दिवौकसः
'Your radiance, sharper than fire, pervades the three worlds; none of us dwellers of heaven are able to look upon it or even stand before it.'
महादेव उवाच-। इत्यर्थितस्तु विबुधैस्तेजस्तदतिभीषणम् । उपसंहृत्य देवेशो बभूव सुखदर्शनः
Mahadeva said: Thus requested by the gods, the Lord of the gods withdrew that exceedingly terrifying radiance and became pleasing to behold.
