इति तद्वाक्यमाकर्ण्य हनूमान्निजगाद तम् । शत्रुघ्नो लवणच्छेत्ता वर्तते सैन्यपालकः
Hearing these words, Hanuman replied to him: 'Shatrughna, the slayer of Lavaṇa, stands as the protector of the army.'
स कथं प्रधने युध्येत्सेवकेऽग्रे स्थिते नृप । मां विजित्य रणे तं च त्वं गंतासि नरर्षभ
'How could he fight in the forefront while his servant stands before him, O king? Defeat me in battle, and then you may go to him, bull among men.'
इत्युक्तवंतं तरसा विव्याध दशसायकैः । हृदि वानरमत्युग्रं पर्वताग्र्यमिवस्थितम्
As Hanuman spoke thus, Subāhu quickly pierced the fierce monkey standing like a mountain peak with ten arrows in the chest.
सबाणानागतांस्तांश्च गृहीत्वा करसंपुटे । चूर्णयामास तिलशः शितान्वैरिविदारणान्
Hanuman caught those sharp, enemy-slaying arrows in the hollow of his hands and crushed them to powder like sesame seeds.
चूर्णयित्वा शरांस्तांस्तु निनदन्घनगर्जितैः । पुच्छेनावेष्ट्य तस्योच्चै रथं निन्ये महाबलः
Having crushed those arrows with thunderous roars and the sound of his limbs, the mighty one wrapped his tail around it and carried away the chariot with great force.
तदा तं नृपवर्योऽसावाकाशे स्थित एव सः । लांगूलं ताडयामास शिताग्रैः सायकैर्मुहुः
Then that foremost king, standing in the sky, struck his tail again and again with sharp-tipped arrows.
स ताडितस्तु पुच्छाग्रे शरैः सन्नतपर्वभिः । मुमोच तद्रथं दिव्यं कनकेन विचित्रितम्
Struck at the tip of his tail by those arrows with bent joints, he released that divine chariot, adorned with gold.
स मुक्तस्तेन तरसा शरैस्तीक्ष्णैर्जघान तम् । हनूमंतं कपिवरं रोषसंपूरितेक्षणः
Freed by that force, with sharp arrows he struck Hanuman, the best of monkeys, his eyes filled with anger.
हनूमान्बाणविच्छिन्नः सर्वत्ररुधिराप्लुतः । महारोषं समाधत्त नृपोपरि कपीश्वरः
Hanuman, cut by arrows and covered in blood all over, was seized by great wrath against the king.
गृहीत्वा तस्य दंष्ट्राभी रथं हयसमन्वितम् । चूर्णयामस वेगेन तदद्भुतमिवाभवत्
Seizing his chariot with his teeth, along with the horses, he crushed it with speed; it appeared truly wondrous.
स्वरथं भज्यमानं तु दृष्ट्वा राजा त्वरन्बली । अन्यं रथं समास्थाय युयुधे तं महाबलम्
Seeing his own chariot being destroyed, the powerful king quickly mounted another chariot and fought that mighty one.
पुच्छे मुखेऽथोरसि च भुजे चरणयोर्नृपः । जघान शरसंधानकोविदः परमास्त्रवित्
The king, skilled in the use of arrows and master of supreme weapons, struck him on the tail, mouth, chest, arms, and feet.
तदा क्रुद्धः कपिवरस्ताडयामास वक्षसि । पादेनोत्प्लुत्य वेगेन राज्ञः सुभटशोभिनः
Then the best of monkeys, enraged, leapt swiftly and struck the illustrious king on the chest with his foot.
स पदा प्रहतो भूमौ पपात किल मूर्च्छितः । मुखाद्वमन्नसृक्चोष्णं श्वासपूरप्रवेपितः
Struck by the foot, he fell to the ground unconscious, hot blood flowing from his mouth, his breath trembling with pain.
तदा प्रकुपितोऽत्यंतं हनूमान्प्रधनांगणे । अश्वान्वीरान्गजांश्चापि चूर्णयामास वेगतः
Then Hanuman, extremely enraged in the midst of the main battlefield, swiftly crushed horses, warriors, and elephants.
तदा सुकेतुस्तद्भ्राता तथा लक्ष्मीनिधिर्नृपः । उभावपि सुसन्नद्धौ युद्धाय समुपस्थितौ
Then Suketu, his brother, and the king Lakshminidhi, both well-armored, came forward together for battle.
राजानं मूर्च्छितं दृष्ट्वा प्रपलाय्य गता नराः । इतस्ततो बाणसंघैः क्षताः पुष्कलवर्षितैः
Seeing the king unconscious, the men fled, wounded here and there by showers of arrows.
तद्भज्यमानं स्वबलं वीक्ष्य राजात्मजो बली । दमनः स्तंभयामास सेतुर्वार्धिमिवोच्चलम्
Seeing his own force being destroyed, the powerful prince Damana restrained them, like a dam holding back a rising flood.
तदा तु मूर्च्छितो राजा स्वप्नमेकं ददर्श ह । रणमध्ये कपिवरप्रपदाघातताडितः
Then the unconscious king saw a dream: in the midst of battle, struck by the foot of the best of monkeys.
रामचंद्रस्त्वयोध्यायां सरयूतीरमंडपे । ब्राह्मणैर्याज्ञिकश्रेष्ठैर्बहुभिः परिवारितः
Rama Chandra, in Ayodhya, at the Sarayu river pavilion, was surrounded by many eminent Brahmins, foremost in sacrifice.
तत्र ब्रह्मादयो देवास्तत्र ब्रह्मांडकोटयः । कृतप्राञ्जलयस्तं वै स्तुवंति स्तुतिभिर्मुहुः
There were Brahma and other gods, and countless universes; with joined palms, they praised him again and again with hymns.
रामं श्यामं सुनयनं मृगशृंगपरिग्रहम् । गायंति नारदाद्याश्च वीणोल्लसितपाणयः
Rama, dark-hued, with beautiful eyes and holding a deer-horn, was being sung by Narada and others, their hands shining with lutes.
नृत्यंत्यप्सरसस्तत्र घृताची मेनकादयः । वेदा मूर्तिधरा भूत्वा उपतिष्ठंति राघवम्
There, the Apsarases such as Ghritachi and Menaka were dancing, and the Vedas, taking embodied form, attended upon Raghava.
यच्च किंचिद्वस्तुजातं सर्वशोभासमन्वितम् । तस्य दातारमखिलं भक्तानां भोगदायकम्
And whatever kinds of objects existed there, all endowed with every beauty, their giver was entirely he who grants enjoyment to devotees.
इत्येवमादिसंपश्यञ्जाग्रत्संज्ञामवाप सः । ब्रह्मशापहतज्ञानः किं दृष्टमिति वै वदन्
Seeing thus, he, whose knowledge had been destroyed by Brahma's curse, while awake, attained awareness, saying, 'What have I seen?'
उत्थाय प्रययौ पद्भ्यां शत्रुघ्नचरणं प्रति । भृत्यकोटिपरीवारो रथकोटिपरीवृतः
Rising up, he went on foot towards Shatrughna's feet, surrounded by a multitude of servants and encircled by a host of chariots.
सुकेतुं तु समाहूय विचित्रं दमनं तथा । युद्धं कर्तुं समुद्युक्तान्वारयामास धर्मवित्
He summoned Suketu and the wondrous Daman, and, as they were eager to fight, the knower of dharma restrained them.
उवाच तान्महाराजो धर्मात्मा धर्मसंयुतः । भ्रातःपुत्रौ शृणुत मे वाक्यं धर्मसमन्वितम्
The great king, righteous and endowed with dharma, spoke to them: 'O sons of my brother, listen to my words imbued with dharma.'
मा युद्धं कुरुत क्षिप्रमनयस्तु महानभूत् । यद्रामचंद्रवाहं त्वमगृह्णाद्दमनोर्ज्जितम्
'Do not quickly engage in battle; let this great calamity not occur. For you seized the vehicle of Rama, powerful in subduing enemies.'
एष रामः परंब्रह्म कार्यकारणतः परम् । चराचरजगत्स्वामी न मानुषवपुर्धरः
'This Rama is the Supreme Brahman, the highest in cause and effect, the lord of the moving and unmoving world, not one who bears a human form.'
