अन्नं सर्वगुणोपेतं पानं चैवामृतासवम् । अथादर्शे स्वमात्मानं स्रग्विणं विरजोंबरम्
Food endowed with all virtues and drink like nectar-wine; then, in the mirror, she saw herself adorned with a garland, clad in spotless garments.
ताभिः कृतस्वस्त्ययनं कन्याभिर्बहुमानितम् । हारेण च महार्हेण रुचकेन च भूषितम्
Honored greatly by the maidens who performed auspicious rites for her, she was adorned with a most precious necklace and a shining ornament.
निष्कग्रीवं वलयिनं क्वणत्कांचननूपुरम् । श्रोण्योरध्यस्तया कांच्या कांचन्या बहुरत्नया
With a golden necklace at her throat, bangles on her arms, and tinkling golden anklets, her hips were encircled by a gem-studded golden girdle.
सुभ्रुवा सुदता शुक्लस्निग्धापांगेन चक्षुषा । पद्मकोशस्पृधा नीलैरलकैश्च लसन्मुखम्
With beautiful brows, lovely teeth, and eyes moist and bright as white lotuses, her face shone, framed by dark curling locks rivaling lotus buds.
यदा सस्मार दयितमृषीणां वल्लभं पतिम् । तत्र चास्ते सहस्त्रीभिर्यत्रास्ते स मुनीश्वरः
When she remembered her beloved, the lord of the sages, she saw him there, surrounded by his wives, where that great sage dwelled.
भर्तुः पुरस्तादात्मानं स्त्रीसहस्रवृतं तदा । निशाम्य तद्योगगतिं संशयं प्रत्यपद्यत
Then, before her husband, she saw herself surrounded by thousands of women; perceiving that yogic state, she became filled with doubt.
सतां कृत मलस्नानां विभ्राजंतीमपूर्ववत् । आत्मनो बिभ्रतीं रूपं संवीतरुचिरस्तनीम्
Radiant as if newly bathed and purified, she beheld herself with a form adorned with beauty, her breasts covered by a splendid garment.
विद्याधरी सहस्रेण सेव्यमानां सुवाससम् । जातभावो विमानं तदारोहयदमित्रहन्
Attended by a thousand Vidyādharī maidens, splendidly dressed, she, now transformed, ascended the celestial chariot with her beloved, the subduer of foes.
तस्मिन्नलुप्तमहिमा प्रिययानुषक्तो । विद्याधरीभिरुपचीर्णवपुर्विमाने । बभ्राज उत्कचकुमुद्गणवानपीच्य । स्ताराभिरावृत इवोडुपतिर्नभःस्थः
There, his glory undiminished, attached to his beloved, his form attended by Vidyādharī maidens, he shone in the chariot, like the moon in the sky surrounded by stars and clusters of white lotuses.
तेनाष्टलोकपविहारकुलाचलेंद्र -। द्रोणीष्वनंगसखमारुतसौभगासु । सिद्धैर्नुतोद्युधुनिपातशिवस्वनासु । रेमे चिरं धनदवल्ललनावरूथी
With that retinue of Vidyādharī maidens, he delighted for a long time among the peaks and valleys of the eight celestial mountains, where the wind is ever gentle, praised by the Siddhas with the music of celestial drums and auspicious sounds.
वैश्रंभके सुरवने नंदने पुष्पभद्रके । मानसे चैत्ररथ्ये च सरे मे रामया रतः
In Vaiśrambhaka, the divine forest, in Nandana, Puṣpabhadraka, Mānasa, and Caitrarathya, he enjoyed himself with Rāmā in those groves.
सुमतिरुवाच। एवं तया क्रीडमानः सर्वत्र धरणीतले । नाबुध्यत गतानब्दाञ्छतसंख्या परीमितान्
Sumati said: Thus, while he sported with her everywhere on earth, he did not notice the passing of hundreds of measured years.
ततो ज्ञात्वाथव तद्विप्रः स्वकालपरिवर्तिनीम् । मनोरथैश्च संपूर्णां स्वस्यप्रियतमां वराम्
Then, realizing this, the sage understood the change of his destined time, and that his dearest wish had been fulfilled.
न्यवर्तताश्रमं श्रेष्ठं पयोष्णीतीरसंस्थितम् । निर्वैरजं तु जनतासंकुलं मृगसेवितम्
He returned to his excellent hermitage, situated on the bank of the Payoṣṇī, free from hostility, crowded with people, and frequented by deer.
तत्रावसत्स सुतपाः शिष्यैर्वेदसमन्वितैः । सेवितांघ्रियुगो नित्यं तताप परमं तपः
There, the ascetic dwelled with his disciples learned in the Vedas; ever attended by them, he practiced the highest austerity.
कदाचिदथ शर्यातिर्यष्टुमैच्छत देवताः । तदा च्यवनमानेतुं प्रेषयामास सेवकान्
Once, King Śaryāti wished to perform a sacrifice to the gods; then he sent servants to bring Cyavana.
तैराहूतो द्विजवरस्तत्रागच्छन्महातपाः । सुकन्यया धर्मपत्न्या स्वाचार परिनिष्ठया
Summoned by them, the great sage, steadfast in austerity, came with Sukanyā, his righteous wife, perfect in her conduct.
आगतं तं मुनिवरं पत्न्या पुत्र्या महायशाः । ददर्श दुहितुः पार्श्वे पुरुषं सूर्यवर्चसम्
The illustrious king saw the sage arrive, accompanied by his wife and daughter, and beside his daughter, a man radiant as the sun.
राजा दुहितरं प्राह कृतपादाभिवंदनाम् । आशिषो न प्रयुंजानो नातिप्रीतमना इव
The king spoke to his daughter, who had bowed at his feet, not bestowing blessings, and seeming not entirely pleased in his mind.
चिकीर्षितं ते किमिदं पतिस्त्वया । प्रलंभितो लोकनमस्कृतो मुनिः । त्वया जराग्रस्तमसंमतं पतिं । विहाय जारं भजसेऽमुमध्वगम्
What is this that you have done, wishing for a husband? You have deceived the sage, honored by the world. Abandoning your husband, old and approved by your elders, you have chosen this lover, this wanderer.
कथं मतिस्तेऽवगतान्यथासतां कुलप्रसूतेः कुलदूषणं त्विदम् । बिभर्षि जारं यदपत्रपाकुलं पितुः स्वभर्तुश्च नयस्यधस्तमाम्
How did your mind, born in a noble family, come to embrace such disgrace? By taking a lover, shameless and agitated, you bring dishonor to your father and your husband.
एवं ब्रुवाणं पितरं स्मयमाना शुचिस्मिता । उवाच तात जामाता तवैष भृगुनंदनः
To her father, who spoke thus, she replied with a gentle smile: 'Father, this son of Bhrigu is your son-in-law.'
शशंस पित्रे तत्सर्वं वयोरूपाभिलंभनम् । विस्मितः परमप्रीतस्तनयां परिषस्वजे
She told her father everything about the change in age and appearance. Astonished and deeply pleased, he embraced his daughter.
सोमेनायाजयद्वीरं ग्रहं सोमस्य चाग्रहीत् । असोमपोरप्यश्विनोश्च्यवनः स्वेन तेजसा
By Soma's command, the hero performed the ritual and received the Soma draught; but Cyavana, by his own power, seized the share of the Ashvins.
ग्रहं तु ग्राहयामास तपोबलसमन्वितः । वज्रं गृहीत्वा शक्रस्तु हंतुं ब्राह्मणसत्तमम्
Endowed with ascetic power, he made the Ashvins receive their share. Then Indra, holding the thunderbolt, prepared to strike the best of Brahmins.
अपंक्तिपावनौ देवौ कुर्वाणं पंक्तिगोचरौ । शक्रं वज्रधरं दृष्ट्वा मुनिः स्वहननोद्यतम्
The two gods, purifiers of the unworthy, entered the ritual line. Seeing Indra, wielder of the thunderbolt, with his hand raised against the sage—
हुंकारमकरोद्धीमान्स्तंभयामास तद्भुजम् । इंद्रः स्तब्धभुजस्तत्र दृष्टः सर्वैश्च मानवैः
The wise sage uttered a hum sound and paralyzed Indra's arm. There, Indra was seen by all men with his arm immobilized.
कोपेन श्वसमानोऽहिर्यथा मंत्रनियंत्रितः । तुष्टाव स मुनिं शक्रः स्तब्धबाहुस्तपोनिधिम्
Breathing in anger like a serpent restrained by spells, Indra, his arm paralyzed, praised the sage, the treasure of austerity.
अश्विभ्यां भागदानं च कुर्वंतं निर्भयांतरम् । कथयामास भोः स्वामिन्दीयतामश्विनोर्बलि
Seeing the Ashvins fearlessly receiving their share, he said, 'O lord, let the offering be given to the Ashvins.'
मया न वार्यते तात क्षमस्वाघं महत्कृतम् । इत्युक्तः स मुनिः कोपं जहौ तूर्णं कृपानिधिः
'I do not forbid it, father; forgive the great wrong done.' Thus addressed, the sage, full of compassion, quickly let go of his anger.
