कटाक्षैर्नूपुरारावैः परिरंभैर्विलोकनैः । न तस्य चित्तं विभ्रांतं कर्तुं शक्ता वरांगनाः
With sidelong glances, the sound of anklets, embraces, and alluring looks, even the most beautiful women could not disturb his mind.
गत्वा यथागतं शक्रं जगदुर्धीरधीर्नृपः । तच्छ्रुत्वा मघवा भीतः सेवामारभतात्मनः
Having come and gone to Indra as before, the wise king, upon hearing this, made Maghavan fearful, who then began to serve him.
अथ निश्चितमालोक्य पादपद्मे स्वकेंऽबिका । जितेंद्रियं महाराजं प्रत्यक्षाभूत्सुतोषिता
Then, seeing with certainty at her own lotus feet, the goddess appeared visibly, pleased with the king who had conquered his senses.
पंचास्यपृष्ठललिता पाशांकुशधरावरा । धनुर्बाणधरा माता जगत्पावनपावनी
Graceful upon the back of a five-faced lion, holding noose and goad, bow and arrows, the Mother who purifies the world appeared.
तां वीक्ष्य मातरं धीमान्सूर्यकोटिसमप्रभाम् । धनुर्बाणसृणीपाशान्दधानां हर्षमाप्तवान्
Seeing that Mother, radiant as ten million suns, bearing bow, arrows, cord, and noose, the wise one was filled with joy.
शिरसा बहुशो नत्वा मातरं भक्तिभाविताम् । हसंतीं निजदेहेषु स्पृशंतीं पाणिना मुहुः
He bowed his head many times to the Mother, filled with devotion, as she smiled and repeatedly touched her own body with her hand.
तुष्टाव भक्त्युत्कलितचित्तवृत्तिर्महामतिः । गद्गदस्वरसंयुक्तः कंटकांगोपशोभितः
With a mind overflowing with devotion, the wise one praised her, his voice choked with emotion, his body adorned with goosebumps.
जय देवि महादेवि भक्तवृंदैकसेविते । ब्रह्मरुद्रादिदेवेंद्र सेवितांघ्रियुगेऽनघे
Victory to you, O Goddess, great Goddess, sole refuge of the assembly of devotees, whose pair of feet are served by Brahma, Rudra, and Indra, O sinless one!
मातस्तव कलाविद्धमेतद्भाति चराचरम् । त्वदृते नास्ति सर्वं तन्मातर्भद्रे नमोस्तु ते
Mother, all that moves and does not move shines, infused by your power; apart from you, nothing exists—O auspicious Mother, I bow to you.
मही त्वयाऽधारशक्त्या स्थापिता चलतीह न । सपर्वतवनोद्यान दिग्गजैरुपशोभिता
By your sustaining power, the earth is established and does not waver here, adorned with mountains, forests, gardens, and the elephants of the directions.
सूर्यस्तपति खे तीक्ष्णैरंशुभिः प्रतपन्महीम् । त्वच्छक्त्या वसुधासंस्थं रसं गृह्णन्विमुंचति
The sun burns in the sky with sharp rays, heating the earth; by your power, he draws up and releases the moisture from the ground.
अंतर्बहिः स्थितो वह्निर्लोकानां प्रकरोतु शम् । त्वत्प्रतापान्महादेवि सुरासुरनमस्कृते
The fire that dwells within and without all beings brings peace to the worlds by your majesty, O great Goddess, worshipped by gods and demons.
त्वं विद्या त्वं महामाया विष्णोर्लोकैकपालिनः । स्वशक्त्या सृजसीदं त्वं पालयस्यपि मोहिनि
You are knowledge, you are the great illusion of Viṣṇu, the sole protector of the worlds; by your own power you create and, O enchantress, you also sustain this world.
त्वत्तः सर्वे सुराः प्राप्य सिद्धिं सुखमयंति वै । मां पालय कृपानाथे वंदिते भक्तवल्लभे
From you, all the gods attain success and happiness; protect me, O compassionate one, revered by all, beloved of your devotees.
रक्ष मां सेवकं मातस्त्वदीयचरणारणम् । कुरु मे वांछितां सिद्धिं महापुरुषपूर्वजे
Protect me, your servant, O Mother, whose feet are my refuge; grant me the success I desire, O ancient one, worshipped by the great.
सुमतिरुवाच। एवं तुष्टा जगन्माता वृणीष्व वरमुत्तमम् । उवाच भक्तं सुमदं तपसा कृशदेहिनम्
Sumati said: Thus, the Mother of the world, being pleased, said to the devoted and emaciated Sumada, 'Choose the highest boon.'
इत्येतद्वाक्यमाकर्ण्य प्रहृष्टः सुमदो नृपः । वव्रे निजं हृतं राज्यं हतदुर्जनकंटकम्
Hearing these words, King Sumada, delighted, requested the return of his own lost kingdom, now freed from wicked thorns.
महेशीचरणद्वंद्वे भक्तिमव्यभिचारिणीम् । प्रांते मुक्तिं तु संसारवारिधेस्तारिणीं पुनः
He also asked for unwavering devotion at the feet of the great goddess, and for liberation at the end—deliverance from the ocean of worldly existence.
कामाक्षोवाच। राज्यं प्राप्नुहि सुमद सर्वत्रहतकंटकम् । महिलारत्नसंजुष्टपादपद्मद्वयो भव
Kamakshi said: 'Regain your kingdom, Sumada, with all its obstacles destroyed; become one whose lotus feet are adorned by the jewels among women.'
ततवैरिपराभूतिर्माभूयात्सुमदाभिध । यदा तु रावणं हत्वा रघुनाथो महायशाः
Let no defeat come to you, Sumada; and when the illustrious Raghunatha has slain Ravana,
करिष्यत्यश्वमेधं हि सर्वसंभारशोभितम् । तस्य भ्राता महावीरः शत्रुघ्नः परवीरहा
He will perform the Ashvamedha sacrifice, splendid with all its arrangements; and his heroic brother Shatrughna, destroyer of enemies,
पालयन्हयमायास्यत्यत्र वीरादिभिर्वृतः । तस्मै सर्वं समर्प्य त्वं राज्यमृद्धं धनादिकम्
Will come here, guarding the sacrificial horse, surrounded by heroes; to him, you shall offer all—your prosperous kingdom and wealth.
पालयिष्यसि योधैः स्वैर्धनुर्धारिभिरुद्भटैः । ततः पृथिव्यां सर्वत्र भ्रमिष्यसि महामते
Then, with your own warriors—bold archers—you will rule; after that, O wise one, you shall travel everywhere upon the earth.
ततो रामं नमस्कृत्य ब्रह्मेंद्रेशादिसेवितम् । मुक्तिं प्राप्स्यसि दुष्प्रापां योगिभिर्यमसाधनैः
Then, having bowed to Rama, who is served by Brahma, Indra, and other gods, you will attain that difficult liberation which yogis reach only through great effort.
तावत्कालमिहस्थास्ये यावद्रामहयागमः । पश्चात्त्वां तु समुद्धृत्य गंतास्मि परमं पदम्
I will remain here until Rama's horse arrives; afterwards, I will lift you up and go to the supreme abode.
इत्युक्त्वांतर्दधे देवी सुरासुरनमस्कृता । सुमदोऽप्यहिच्छत्रायां शत्रून्हत्वा नृपोऽभवत्
Having spoken thus, the goddess—revered by gods and demons—disappeared; and Sumada, having slain his enemies in Ahicchatra, became king.
एष राजा समर्थोऽपि बलवाहनसंयुतः । न ग्रहीष्यति ते वाहं महामायासुशिक्षितः
This king, though capable and possessed of a mighty army, will not seize your mount, being well-trained in the arts of great illusion.
श्रुत्वा प्राप्तं पुरी पार्श्वे हयमेधहयोत्तमम् । त्वां च सर्वैर्महाराजैः सेवितांघ्रिं महामतिम्
Hearing that the best sacrificial horse has arrived at the city, and that you, wise one, are attended by all the great kings,
सर्वं दास्यति सर्वज्ञ राजा सुमदनामधृक् । अधुनातन्महाराज रामचंद्र प्रतापतः
King Sumada, who knows all, will give you everything; for now, O great king, this is due to the majesty of Ramachandra.
शेष उवाच। इति वृत्तं समाकर्ण्य सुमदस्य महायशाः । साधुसाध्विति चोवाच जहर्ष मतिमान्बली
Shesha said: Hearing of these events concerning Sumada, the illustrious one, the wise and mighty king exclaimed 'Excellent, excellent!' and rejoiced.
