नातिक्रमणीयमिदं भवद्भ्यां द्वारपालकौ । दासत्वं सप्तजन्मानि युवां भक्तौ ममानघौ
This cannot be transgressed by you, O gatekeepers. For seven births you will be my faultless devotees in servitude.
अमित्रतस्तथा त्रीणि जन्मानि भजतोऽपि वा । रुद्र उवाच- इत्युक्तौ तौ महावीर्य्यावब्रूतां परमेश्वरम्
Or, as enemies, for three births, even while worshipping me. Rudra said: Thus addressed, those two mighty ones spoke to the Supreme Lord.
जयविजयावूचतुः । चिरकालं महीं गंतुं न समर्थौ स्व मानद । तस्माद्वैराय जन्मानि विद्धि वां च व्रजावहे
Jaya and Vijaya said: We are not able to remain long on earth, O bestower of honor; therefore, know that we choose to be born as enemies, and let us go.
देवत्व यैव निहतो प्राप्स्यावो भवदंतिकम् । रुद्र उवाच- इत्युक्त्वा द्वारपालौ तौ पूर्वं जातौ महाबलौ
By being slain by divinity, we will attain your presence. Rudra said: Having thus spoken, those two mighty gatekeepers were first born again.
कश्यपस्य महावीर्य्यौ दितिगर्भे महासुरौ । हिरण्यकशिपुर्ज्येष्ठो हिरण्याक्षः कनिष्ठकः
Those two, mighty sons of Kaśyapa, great demons in Diti’s womb—Hiraṇyakaśipu the elder, Hiraṇyākṣa the younger.
उभौ तौ लोकविख्यातौ महावीर्य्य बलोद्धतौ । अप्रमाणशरीरः स हिरण्याक्षो महोद्धतः
Both of them, renowned in all the worlds, mighty and proud in strength; Hiraṇyākṣa, immeasurable in body, exceedingly arrogant.
उत्पाट्य बाहुसाहस्रैः पृथिवीं समहीधराम् । ससागरां द्वीपयुतां सर्व्वप्राणिसमन्विताम्
With thousands of arms, he uprooted the earth, along with its mountains, oceans, islands, and all living beings.
उत्पाट्य शिरसा कृत्वा प्रविवेश रसातलम् । ततो देवगणाः सर्वे चुक्रुशुर्भयपीडिताः
Uprooting it and placing it on his head, he entered the netherworld. Then all the hosts of gods cried out, afflicted by fear.
शरणं प्रययुर्देवं नारायणमनामयम् । ततस्तदद्भुतं ज्ञात्वा शंखचक्रगदाधरः
They sought refuge in the god Nārāyaṇa, who is free from affliction; then, knowing that wondrous event, the bearer of the conch, discus, and mace—
वाराहरूपमास्थाय विश्वरूपं जनार्दनः । अनादिमध्यांतवपुः सर्वदेवमयो विभुः
Janārdana, assuming the form of the boar and the universal form, whose body has neither beginning, middle, nor end, who is the essence of all gods, the mighty—
विश्वतः पाणिपच्चक्षुर्महादंष्ट्रो महाभुजः । दंष्ट्रैकया तु तं दैत्यं जघान परमेश्वरः
With hands and eyes everywhere, with great tusks and mighty arms, the supreme lord slew that demon with a single tusk.
संचूर्णितमहागात्रो ममार दितिजाधमः । पतितां धरणीं दृष्ट्वा दंष्ट्रयोद्धृत्य पूर्ववत्
The wicked offspring of Diti, his massive body crushed, died; seeing the earth fallen, he lifted it with his tusk as before.
संस्थाप्य धारयामास शेषे कूर्म्मवपुस्तदा । तं दृष्ट्वा देवताः सर्व्वे क्रोडरूपं महाहरिम् । तुष्टुवुर्म्मुनयश्चैव भक्तिनम्रात्ममूर्त्तयः
Having established and supported it upon Śeṣa, then in the form of a tortoise, all the gods, seeing the great Hari in the form of a boar, along with the sages, praised him, their bodies bowed in devotion.
देवा ऊचुः- नमो यज्ञवराहाय नमस्ते शतबाहवे । नमस्ते देवदेवाय नमस्ते विश्वरूपिणे
The gods said: Salutations to the sacrificial boar, salutations to you with a hundred arms; salutations to the god of gods, salutations to you who possess the universal form.
नमः स्थितिस्वरूपाय सर्वयज्ञस्वरूपिणे । कलाकाष्ठानिमेषाय नमस्ते कालरूपिणे
Salutations to you, embodiment of preservation, to you who are the form of all sacrifices; to you who are time, measured by moments, minutes, and hours; salutations to you, who are the form of time.
भूतात्मने नमस्तुभ्यमृग्वेदवपुषे तथा । सुरात्मने नमस्तुभ्यं सामवेदाय ते नमः
Salutations to you, soul of all beings, and to you whose form is the Ṛg Veda; salutations to you, soul of the gods, and to you who are the Sāma Veda.
ॐकाराय नमस्तुभ्यं यजुर्वेदस्वरूपिणे । ऋचःस्वरूपिणे चैव चतुर्वेदमयाय च
Salutations to you, embodiment of Om, to you who are the form of the Yajur Veda; and to you who are the form of the Ṛg verses, and to you who are composed of the four Vedas.
नमस्ते वेदवेदाङ्ग सांगोपांगाय ते नमः । गोविंदाय नमस्तुभ्यमनादिनिधनाय च
Salutations to you, who are the Vedas and their limbs, with all their parts and sub-parts; salutations to Govinda, to you who are without beginning or end.
नमस्ते वेदविदुषे विशिष्टैकस्वरूपिणे । श्रीभूलीलाधिपतये जगत्पित्रे नमोनमः
Salutations to you, knower of the Vedas, to you who are the unique, supreme form; repeated salutations to the lord of Śrī and Bhū, to the father of the world.
रुद्र उवाच- इत्यादि स्तुतिभिः स्तुत्वा देवं वाराहरूपिणम् । अर्च्चयामासुरात्मेशं गंधपुष्पादिभिर्हरिम्
Rudra said: Thus, having praised the god in the form of the boar with such hymns, they worshipped the lord of souls, Hari, with scents, flowers, and other offerings.
समर्च्यमानस्तैर्देवैस्तेषामिष्टं वरं ददौ । गंधर्वैरप्सरोभिश्च गायमानो मुदा हरिः
Being worshipped by those gods, he granted them their desired boon; Hari, rejoicing, was sung to by Gandharvas and Apsarases.
महर्षिभिः स्तूयमानस्तत्रैवांतरधीयत । एभिः स्तुत्वा नरो भक्त्या प्रातरुत्थाय भक्तिमान्
Praised by the great sages, he vanished there; whoever praises him with devotion, rising early in the morning—
ईप्सितांल्लभते भूमिं चिरं सस्यफलान्विताम् । एतत्ते सर्वमाख्यातं वाराहवैभवं हरैः । नारसिंहं तथा वक्ष्ये शृणु देवि वरानने
Obtains the desired earth, long endowed with abundant crops and fruits; all this Varāha's glory has been told to you; I will now speak of Nārasiṃha, listen, O goddess with radiant face.
इति श्रीपाद्मे महापुराणे पंचपंचाशत्साहस्र्यां संहितायामुत्तरखंडे। वराहावतारकथनंनाम सप्तत्रिंशदधिकद्विशततमोऽध्यायः
Thus, in the glorious Padma Mahāpurāṇa, in the Uttara Khaṇḍa of the fifty-five-thousand-verse Saṃhitā, the two hundred thirty-seventh chapter, named 'The Story of the Varāha Incarnation.'
रुद्र उवाच- भ्रातरं निहतं ज्ञात्वा हिरण्यकशिपुस्ततः । तपस्तेपे महादैत्यो मेरोः पार्श्वे च मां प्रति
Rudra said: Knowing his brother had been slain, Hiraṇyakaśipu, the great demon, then performed austerities beside Mount Meru, directed at me.
दिव्यवर्षसहस्राणि वायुभक्षो महाबलः । जपन्पंचाक्षरं मंत्रं पूजयामास मां शुभे
For thousands of divine years, subsisting on air, mighty in strength, chanting the five-syllable mantra, he worshipped me, O auspicious one.
ततः प्रहृष्टमनसा तमवोचं महासुरम् । वरं वृणीष्व दैतेय यत्ते मनसि वर्त्तते । ततः प्रोवाच दैतेयो मां प्रसन्नं शुभानने
Then, with a delighted heart, I spoke to that great asura: 'Choose a boon, O Daitya, whatever is in your mind.' Then the Daitya replied to me, O auspicious-faced one, as I was pleased.
हिरण्यकशिपुरुवाच- देवासुरमनुष्याणां गंधर्वोरगरक्षसाम् । पशुपक्षिमृगाणां च सिद्धानां वै महात्मनाम्
Hiraṇyakaśipu said: 'Among the gods, asuras, humans, gandharvas, serpents, and rākṣasas, and among cattle, birds, wild animals, and the great perfected beings—'
यक्षविद्याधराणां च किन्नराणां तथैव च । सर्वेषामेव रोगाणामायुधानां तथैव च । सर्वेषामृषिमुख्यानामवध्यत्वं प्रयच्छ मे
'—and among yakṣas, vidyādharas, and likewise kinnaras, and from all diseases and weapons as well, and from all the foremost sages—grant me invulnerability.'
रुद्र उवाच- एवमस्त्विति तद्रक्षस्त्वब्रुवं प्रियदर्शने । मत्तो महद्वरं प्राप्य स दैतेयो महाबलः
Rudra said: 'So be it,' thus I spoke to that rākṣasa, O lovely one. Having obtained this great boon from me, that mighty Daitya—
