Those who are freed from that bondage attain the state of happiness; having reached that, they do not return—therefore, it is called liberation.
Liberation is the supreme state, divine, immortal, the abode of Viṣṇu; the imperishable, highest realm, Vaikuṇṭha, the eternal place.
It is the eternal, supreme sky, the highest and most ancient; these are synonyms for the supreme abode of Acyuta. Now I will describe in detail the form of that threefold manifestation.
Thus, in the glorious Padma Mahāpurāṇa, in the Uttarakhaṇḍa of the section containing fifty-five thousand verses, in the dialogue between Umā and Maheśvara, this is the two hundred and twenty-seventh chapter, named 'The Description of the Threefold Manifestation.'
Śrī Rudra said: O Hiranyakṣa and Hiraṇyakaśipu, sons of Kaśyapa, mighty in strength, sons of Diti, great in valor, both lords of all the Daityas.
By name, they were Jaya and Vijaya; in Śvetadvīpa, they went to Hari. There, those two mighty ones stopped the great sages, Sanaka and the others, who were eager to see Hari.
O Goddess, those two, the best among the gods and mighty in strength, barred the way of the sages who longed to see Hari, and were cursed by them.
The Sanakas said: Having abandoned that, you have become servants of the god on earth. Rudra said: Having pronounced this curse on them, the great sages remained there.
The god, knowing the matter, summoned those two as well.
Then, rising up, those two were addressed there by the Blessed Lord, the creator of beings. The Blessed Lord said: You two, mighty in strength, have committed an offense against the great souls.
This cannot be transgressed by you, O gatekeepers. For seven births you will be my faultless devotees in servitude.
Or, as enemies, for three births, even while worshipping me. Rudra said: Thus addressed, those two mighty ones spoke to the Supreme Lord.
Jaya and Vijaya said: We are not able to remain long on earth, O bestower of honor; therefore, know that we choose to be born as enemies, and let us go.
By being slain by divinity, we will attain your presence. Rudra said: Having thus spoken, those two mighty gatekeepers were first born again.
Those two, mighty sons of Kaśyapa, great demons in Diti’s womb—Hiraṇyakaśipu the elder, Hiraṇyākṣa the younger.
Both of them, renowned in all the worlds, mighty and proud in strength; Hiraṇyākṣa, immeasurable in body, exceedingly arrogant.
With thousands of arms, he uprooted the earth, along with its mountains, oceans, islands, and all living beings.
Uprooting it and placing it on his head, he entered the netherworld. Then all the hosts of gods cried out, afflicted by fear.
They sought refuge in the god Nārāyaṇa, who is free from affliction; then, knowing that wondrous event, the bearer of the conch, discus, and mace—
Janārdana, assuming the form of the boar and the universal form, whose body has neither beginning, middle, nor end, who is the essence of all gods, the mighty—
With hands and eyes everywhere, with great tusks and mighty arms, the supreme lord slew that demon with a single tusk.
The wicked offspring of Diti, his massive body crushed, died; seeing the earth fallen, he lifted it with his tusk as before.
Having established and supported it upon Śeṣa, then in the form of a tortoise, all the gods, seeing the great Hari in the form of a boar, along with the sages, praised him, their bodies bowed in devotion.
The gods said: Salutations to the sacrificial boar, salutations to you with a hundred arms; salutations to the god of gods, salutations to you who possess the universal form.
Salutations to you, embodiment of preservation, to you who are the form of all sacrifices; to you who are time, measured by moments, minutes, and hours; salutations to you, who are the form of time.
Salutations to you, soul of all beings, and to you whose form is the Ṛg Veda; salutations to you, soul of the gods, and to you who are the Sāma Veda.
Salutations to you, embodiment of Om, to you who are the form of the Yajur Veda; and to you who are the form of the Ṛg verses, and to you who are composed of the four Vedas.
Salutations to you, who are the Vedas and their limbs, with all their parts and sub-parts; salutations to Govinda, to you who are without beginning or end.
Salutations to you, knower of the Vedas, to you who are the unique, supreme form; repeated salutations to the lord of Śrī and Bhū, to the father of the world.
Rudra said: Thus, having praised the god in the form of the boar with such hymns, they worshipped the lord of souls, Hari, with scents, flowers, and other offerings.
