इत्युक्त्वा सोऽभवत्तूष्णीं नरदेवशिरोमणिः । सुराः सर्वे प्रहृष्टास्ते ययुर्लोकं स्वकं स्वकम्
Having spoken thus, the foremost among kings became silent; all the gods, delighted, returned each to their own world.
रघुनाथोऽपि भ्रातॄंस्तान्पालयंस्तातवद्बुधान् । प्रजाः पुत्रानिव स्वीयाल्लाँलयँल्लोकनायकः
Raghunātha, the leader of people, cherished his wise brothers as a father does, and cared for his subjects as if they were his own sons.
यस्मिञ्छासति लोकानां नाकालमरणं नृणाम् । न रोगादि पराभूतिर्गृहेषु च महीयसी
During his reign, there was no untimely death among people, nor any defeat from disease or other calamities in their homes.
नेतिः कदापि द्दश्येत वैरिजं भयमेव च । वृक्षाः सदैव फलिनो मही भूयिष्ठधान्यका
Never was there seen the threat of enemies or fear arising from foes; trees always bore fruit, and the earth yielded abundant grain.
पुत्रपौत्रपरीवार सनाथी कृतजीवनाः । कांता संयोगजसुखैर्निरस्तविरहक्लमाः
Surrounded by children and grandchildren, fulfilled in life, people enjoyed the happiness of union with their beloved, free from the pain of separation.
नित्यं श्रीरघुनाथस्य पादपद्मकथोत्सुकाः । कदापि परनिंदासु वाचस्तेषां भवंति न
Always eager to hear stories of Raghunātha's lotus feet, their words never turned to slander of others.
कारवोऽपि कदा पापं नाचरंति मनस्यहो । रघुनाथकराघातदुःखशंकाभिशंसिनः
Even the wicked never committed evil in thought, fearing the punishment from Raghunātha's hand.
सीतापतिमुखालोक निश्चलीभूतलोचनाः । लोका बभूवुः सततं कारुण्यपरिपूरिताः
With eyes fixed unwaveringly on the face of Sītā's husband, the people were ever filled with compassion.
राज्यं प्राप्तमसापत्नं समृद्धबलवाहनम् । ऋषिभिर्हृष्टपुष्टैश्च रम्यं हाटकभूषणैः
The kingdom, free from rivals, possessed abundant forces and vehicles, was delightful with joyful and strong sages, and adorned with golden ornaments.
संपुष्टमिष्टापूर्तानां धर्माणां नित्यकर्तृभिः । सदा संपन्नसस्यं च सुवसुक्षेत्रसंयुतम्
It was flourishing with those who constantly performed the desired rites and acts of charity, always rich in crops and blessed with good fields.
सुदेशं सुप्रजं स्वस्थं सुतृणं बहुगोधनम् । देवतायतनानां च राजिभिः परिराजितम्
It was a good land, with healthy people, fine grass, many cows, and was surrounded by rows of temples to the gods.
सुपूर्णा यत्र वै ग्रामाः सुवित्तर्द्धिविराजिताः । सुपुष्पकृत्रिमोद्यानाः सुस्वादुफलपादपाः
There, the villages were always full, shining with abundant wealth, with beautiful artificial gardens and trees bearing delicious fruit.
सपद्मिनीककासारा यत्र राजंति भूमयः । सदंभा निम्नगा यत्र न यत्र जनता क्वचित्
There, the lands shone with lotus-filled ponds and lakes; the rivers always flowed, and nowhere was there a lack of people.
कुलान्येव कुलीनानां वर्णानां नाधनानि च । विभ्रमो यत्र नारीषु न विद्वत्सु च कर्हिचित्
The noble families remained noble, and none among the classes were destitute; there was never confusion among women or among the learned.
नद्यः कुटिलगामिन्यो न यत्र विषये प्रजाः । तमोयुक्ताः क्षपा यत्र बहुलेषु न मानवाः
The rivers did not flow crookedly, and in that realm, the people were never enveloped in darkness, nor were there men in the thick of night.
रजोयुजः स्त्रियो यत्र नाधर्मबहुला नराः । धनैरनंधो यत्रास्ति जनो नैव च भोजने
Women were not dominated by passion, nor were men overwhelmed by unrighteousness; no one was blinded by wealth or by food.
अनयः स्यंदनो यत्र न च वैराजपूरुषः । दंडः परशुकुद्दालवालव्यजनराजिषु
There was no unjust chariot, nor any servant of enmity; punishment did not fall among the rows of axes, spades, or fans.
आतपत्रेषु नान्यत्र क्वचित्क्रोधोपरोधजः । अन्यत्राक्षिकवृंदेभ्यः क्वचिन्न परिदेवनम्
Nowhere, except among the groups of dice players, was there anger or obstruction arising under umbrellas; nor was there lamentation anywhere.
आक्षिका एव दृश्यंते यत्र पाशकपाणयः । जाड्यवार्ता जलेष्वेव स्त्रीमध्या एव दुर्बलाः
Dice-players are seen only with dice in their hands; sluggishness is spoken of only in water; among women alone is weakness found.
कठोरहृदया यत्र सीमंतिन्यो न मानवाः । औषधेष्वेव यत्रास्ति कुष्ठयोगो न मानवे
Where women are hard-hearted, they are not human; leprosy is found only in medicines, not in people.
वेधो यत्र सुरत्नेषु शूलं मूर्तिकरेषु वै । कंपः सात्विकभावोत्थो न भयात्क्वापि कस्यचित्
Where there is a flaw in precious stones, pain in images, and trembling arising from pure emotion—not from fear—anywhere, in anyone.
संज्वरः कामजो यत्र दारिद्र्यकलुषस्य च । दुर्ल्लभत्वं सदैवस्य सुकृतेन च वस्तुनः
Where fever is born of desire and of the impurity of poverty, and where the attainment of any good thing is always difficult.
इभा एव प्रमत्ता वै युद्धे वीच्यो जलाशये । दानहानिर्गजेष्वेव तीक्ष्णा एव हि कंटकाः
Only elephants are reckless in battle; only waves are found in water; loss of gifts is only among elephants, and thorns are always sharp.
बाणेषु गुणविश्लेषो बंधोक्तिः पुस्तके दृढा । स्नेहत्यागः खलेष्वेव न च वै स्वजने जने
Separation of the string is found in arrows; the statement of bondage is firm in books; abandonment of affection is only among the wicked, never among one's own people.
तं देशं पालयामास लालयँल्लालिताः प्रजाः । धर्मं संस्थापयन्देशे दुष्टे दंडधरोपमः
He governed that land, cherishing the cherished people, establishing righteousness in the land, like a wielder of the rod among the wicked.
एवं पालयतो देशं धर्मेण धरणीतलम् । सहस्रं च व्यतीयुर्वै वर्षाण्येकादश प्रभोः
Thus, as he ruled the land with righteousness, a thousand and eleven years passed for the lord.
तत्र नीचजनाच्छ्रुत्वा सीताया अपमानताम् । स्वां च निंदां रजकतस्तां तत्याज रघूद्वहः
There, having heard from a low person about the dishonor of Sita and his own reproach from a washerman, the descendant of Raghu abandoned her.
पृथ्वीं पालयमानस्य धर्मेण नृपतेस्तदा । सीतां विरहितामेकां निदेशेन सुरक्षिताम्
At that time, as the king ruled the earth with righteousness, Sita, left alone, was protected by command.
कदाचित्संसदो मध्ये ह्यासीनस्य महामतेः । आजगाम मुनिश्रेष्ठः कुंभोत्पत्तिर्मुनिर्महान्
Once, as the wise king was seated in the midst of the assembly, the great sage, best among sages, born from a pot, arrived.
गृहीत्वार्घ्यं समुत्तस्थौ वसिष्ठेन समन्वितः । जनताभिर्महाराजो वार्धिशोषकमागतम्
Having received the arghya, he rose, accompanied by Vasistha; the great king, surrounded by people, welcomed the ocean-drying sage.
