तद्विष्णोः परमं धाम सदा पश्यंति सूरयः । अक्षरं शाश्वतं दिव्यं देवि चक्षुरिवाततम्
The sages always behold that supreme abode of Vishnu; imperishable, eternal, divine, O goddess, spread out like an eye.
तत्प्रवेष्टुमशक्यं च ब्रह्मरुद्रादिदैवतैः । ज्ञानेन शास्त्रमार्गेण वीक्ष्यते योगिपुंगवैः
It cannot be entered by Brahma, Rudra, or other deities; through knowledge and the path of scripture, it is seen by the foremost yogis.
अहं ब्रह्मा च देवाश्च न जानंति महर्षयः । सर्वोपनिषदामर्थं दृष्ट्वा वक्ष्यामि सुव्रते
I, Brahma, the gods, and the great sages do not know it. Having considered the meaning of all the Upanishads, I shall declare it, O virtuous one.
विष्णोः पदे हि परमे पदे तत्सशुभाह्वयेः । यत्र गावो भूरिशृंगा आसते सुसुखाः प्रजाः
In the supreme abode of Vishnu, called the abode of auspiciousness, where cows with abundant horns dwell, and the people are supremely happy.
अत्राह तत्परं धाम गोपवेषस्य शार्ङ्गिणः । तद्भाति परमं धाम गोभिर्गोपैस्सुखाह्वयैः
Here, that supreme abode of the bow-bearing, cowherd Vishnu shines, the supreme abode radiant with cows and cowherds, called the abode of happiness.
आदित्यवर्णं तमसः परस्ताज्ज्योतिरच्युतम् । आधारो ब्रह्मणो लोकश्शुद्धसत्त्वस्सनातनः
Of the color of the sun, beyond darkness, the imperishable light; the foundation of the worlds of Brahman, pure sattva, eternal.
सामान्या विभिते भूमिन्तेऽस्मिन्शाश्वते पदे । तस्थतुर्जागरूकेस्मिन्युवानौ श्रीसनातनौ
On this eternal earth, in that supreme abode, the two eternally youthful ones stand awake, radiant and ancient.
यतः स्वसारौ युवती भूनीले विष्णुवल्लभे । अत्र पूर्वे ये च साध्या विश्वेदेवास्सनातनाः
From whom their sisters, youthful and beloved of Vishnu, arose; here dwell the ancient Sādhyas and all the eternal gods.
ते ह नाकं महिमानस्सचन्ते शुभदर्शनाः । तत्र विज्ञानिनो विप्रा जागृवांसस्समिन्धते
They attain heaven, possessing greatness and auspicious appearance; there, wise Brahmins, awake, shine forth.
तत्पदं ज्ञानिनो विप्रा यांति संवासमिच्छवः । तद्विष्णोः परमं धाम मोक्ष इत्यभिधीयते
Wise Brahmins, desiring companionship, reach that abode; that supreme abode of Vishnu is called liberation.
तस्मिन्बंधविनिर्मुक्ताः प्राप्नुवन्ति सुखं पदम् । तत्प्राप्य न निवर्तंते तस्मान्मोक्ष उदाहृतः
Those who are freed from that bondage attain the state of happiness; having reached that, they do not return—therefore, it is called liberation.
मोक्षं परं पदं दिव्यममृतं विष्णुमंदिरम् । अक्षरं परमं धाम वैकुण्ठं शाश्वतं पदम्
Liberation is the supreme state, divine, immortal, the abode of Viṣṇu; the imperishable, highest realm, Vaikuṇṭha, the eternal place.
नित्यञ्च परमं व्योम सर्वोत्कृष्टं सनातनम् । पर्य्यायवाचकान्यस्य परधाम्नोच्युतस्य च । तस्य त्रिपाद्विभूतेस्तु रूपं वक्ष्यामि विस्तरात्
It is the eternal, supreme sky, the highest and most ancient; these are synonyms for the supreme abode of Acyuta. Now I will describe in detail the form of that threefold manifestation.
इति श्रीपाद्मेमहापुराणे पंचपंचाशत्साहस्र्यां संहितायामुत्तरखंडे उमामहेश्वरसंवादे त्रिपाद्विभूतिकथनंनाम सप्तविंशत्यधिकद्विशततमोऽध्यायः
Thus, in the glorious Padma Mahāpurāṇa, in the Uttarakhaṇḍa of the section containing fifty-five thousand verses, in the dialogue between Umā and Maheśvara, this is the two hundred and twenty-seventh chapter, named 'The Description of the Threefold Manifestation.'
श्रीरुद्र उवाच- हिरण्यक हिरण्याक्षौ काश्यपेयौ महाबलौ । दितिपुत्रौ महावीर्य्यौ सर्व्वदैत्यपती उभौ
Śrī Rudra said: O Hiranyakṣa and Hiraṇyakaśipu, sons of Kaśyapa, mighty in strength, sons of Diti, great in valor, both lords of all the Daityas.
नाम्ना तौ जयविजयौ श्वेतद्वीपे हरिं गतौ । तस्मिन्प्रविष्टयोगीन्द्रान्सनकादीन्महाबलौ
By name, they were Jaya and Vijaya; in Śvetadvīpa, they went to Hari. There, those two mighty ones stopped the great sages, Sanaka and the others, who were eager to see Hari.
वारयामासतुर्देवि हरिसंदर्शनोत्सुकान् । तैः प्रशप्तौ महावीर्य्यौ द्वारपालौ सुरोत्तमौ
O Goddess, those two, the best among the gods and mighty in strength, barred the way of the sages who longed to see Hari, and were cursed by them.
सनकादय ऊचुः- उत्सृज्य तत्पृथिव्यां च यातौ देवस्य किंकरौ । रुद्र उवाच- इति शापं तयोर्दत्त्वा तत्र तस्थुर्मुनीश्वराः
The Sanakas said: Having abandoned that, you have become servants of the god on earth. Rudra said: Having pronounced this curse on them, the great sages remained there.
देवस्तमर्थं ज्ञात्वा च तानाहूय च तावपि
The god, knowing the matter, summoned those two as well.
तौ चोत्थायाब्रवीत्तत्र भगवान्भूतभावनः । भगवानुवाच- कृतवंतौ महावीर्य्यावपराधं महात्मनाम्
Then, rising up, those two were addressed there by the Blessed Lord, the creator of beings. The Blessed Lord said: You two, mighty in strength, have committed an offense against the great souls.
नातिक्रमणीयमिदं भवद्भ्यां द्वारपालकौ । दासत्वं सप्तजन्मानि युवां भक्तौ ममानघौ
This cannot be transgressed by you, O gatekeepers. For seven births you will be my faultless devotees in servitude.
अमित्रतस्तथा त्रीणि जन्मानि भजतोऽपि वा । रुद्र उवाच- इत्युक्तौ तौ महावीर्य्यावब्रूतां परमेश्वरम्
Or, as enemies, for three births, even while worshipping me. Rudra said: Thus addressed, those two mighty ones spoke to the Supreme Lord.
जयविजयावूचतुः । चिरकालं महीं गंतुं न समर्थौ स्व मानद । तस्माद्वैराय जन्मानि विद्धि वां च व्रजावहे
Jaya and Vijaya said: We are not able to remain long on earth, O bestower of honor; therefore, know that we choose to be born as enemies, and let us go.
देवत्व यैव निहतो प्राप्स्यावो भवदंतिकम् । रुद्र उवाच- इत्युक्त्वा द्वारपालौ तौ पूर्वं जातौ महाबलौ
By being slain by divinity, we will attain your presence. Rudra said: Having thus spoken, those two mighty gatekeepers were first born again.
कश्यपस्य महावीर्य्यौ दितिगर्भे महासुरौ । हिरण्यकशिपुर्ज्येष्ठो हिरण्याक्षः कनिष्ठकः
Those two, mighty sons of Kaśyapa, great demons in Diti’s womb—Hiraṇyakaśipu the elder, Hiraṇyākṣa the younger.
उभौ तौ लोकविख्यातौ महावीर्य्य बलोद्धतौ । अप्रमाणशरीरः स हिरण्याक्षो महोद्धतः
Both of them, renowned in all the worlds, mighty and proud in strength; Hiraṇyākṣa, immeasurable in body, exceedingly arrogant.
उत्पाट्य बाहुसाहस्रैः पृथिवीं समहीधराम् । ससागरां द्वीपयुतां सर्व्वप्राणिसमन्विताम्
With thousands of arms, he uprooted the earth, along with its mountains, oceans, islands, and all living beings.
उत्पाट्य शिरसा कृत्वा प्रविवेश रसातलम् । ततो देवगणाः सर्वे चुक्रुशुर्भयपीडिताः
Uprooting it and placing it on his head, he entered the netherworld. Then all the hosts of gods cried out, afflicted by fear.
शरणं प्रययुर्देवं नारायणमनामयम् । ततस्तदद्भुतं ज्ञात्वा शंखचक्रगदाधरः
They sought refuge in the god Nārāyaṇa, who is free from affliction; then, knowing that wondrous event, the bearer of the conch, discus, and mace—
वाराहरूपमास्थाय विश्वरूपं जनार्दनः । अनादिमध्यांतवपुः सर्वदेवमयो विभुः
Janārdana, assuming the form of the boar and the universal form, whose body has neither beginning, middle, nor end, who is the essence of all gods, the mighty—
