सीतया सहितं रामं लक्ष्मणेन समन्वितम् । सुग्रीवादिकपींद्रैश्च रक्षोभिः सबिभीषणैः
Tell him that Rama, together with Sita, accompanied by Lakshmana, with Sugriva and the other monkey chiefs, and with the rakshasas including Vibhishana,
प्राप्तं निवेदय सुखात्पुष्पकासनसंस्थितम् । येन मे सोऽनुजः शीघ्रं सुखमेति मदागमात्
has arrived, seated happily upon the Pushpaka chariot; by whose coming, my younger brother will soon find happiness.
इति श्रुत्वा ततो वाक्यं रघुवीरस्य धीमतः । जगाम भरतावासं नंदिग्रामं निदेशकृत्
Having heard these words of the wise hero of the Raghu line, he went to Bharata's residence in Nandigrama, carrying out the command.
गत्वा स नंदिग्रामं तु मंत्रिवृद्धैः सुसंयतम् । भरतं भ्रातृविरहक्लिन्नं धीमान्ददर्श ह
Having reached Nandigrama, well-governed by elder ministers, he saw Bharata, wise but weakened by separation from his brother.
कथयंतं मंत्रिवृद्धान्रामचंद्रकथानकम् । तदीय पदापाथोज मकरंदसुनिर्भरः
He found him speaking to the elder ministers, narrating stories of Rama, his words overflowing with the nectar of devotion to Rama's lotus feet.
नमश्चकार भरतं धर्मं मूर्तियुतं किल । विधात्रा सकलांशेन सत्त्वेनैव विनिर्मितम्
He offered salutations to Bharata, who was indeed the embodiment of dharma, created by the Creator with all virtues and pure essence.
तं दृष्ट्वा भरतः शीघ्रं प्रत्युत्थाय कृतांजलि । स्वागतं चेति होवाच रामस्य कुशलं वद
Seeing him, Bharata quickly rose, palms joined in reverence, and said, 'Welcome! Tell me, is Rama well?'
इत्येवं वदतस्तस्य भुजो दक्षिणतोऽस्फुरत् । हृदयाच्च गतः शोको हर्षास्रैः पूरिताननः
As he spoke thus, his right arm trembled, sorrow departed from his heart, and his face was filled with tears of joy.
विलोक्य तादृशं भूपं प्रत्युवाच कपीश्वरः । निकटे हि पुरः प्राप्तं विद्धि रामं सलक्ष्मणम्
Seeing the king in such a state, the lord of the monkeys replied, 'Know that Rama, together with Lakshmana, has arrived nearby.'
रामागमनसंदेशामृतसिक्तकलेवरः । प्रापयद्धर्षपूरं हि सहस्रास्यो न वेद्म्यहम्
His body, sprinkled with the nectar of the news of Rama's arrival, was filled with joy; as for Ravana, I do not know his fate.
जगाद मम तन्नास्ति यत्तुभ्यं दीयते मया । दासोऽस्मि जन्मपर्यंतं रामसंदेशहारकः
He said, 'There is nothing of mine that is not yours; I am your servant for life, the bearer of Rama's message.'
वसिष्ठोऽपि गृहीत्वार्घ्यं मंत्रिवृद्धाः सुहर्षिताः । जग्मुस्ते रामचंद्रं च हनुमद्दर्शिताध्वना
Vasishtha, taking the offering, and the elder ministers, filled with joy, went to Rama, following the path shown by Hanuman.
दृष्ट्वा दूरात्समायांतं रामचंद्रं मनोरमम् । पुष्पकासनमध्यस्थं ससीतं सहलक्ष्मणम्
Seeing from afar the charming Rama arriving, seated in the midst of the Pushpaka chariot, with Sita and Lakshmana,
रामोऽपि दृष्ट्वा भरतं पादचारेण संगतम् । जटावल्कलकौपीन परिधानसमन्वितम्
Rama, seeing Bharata approaching on foot, clad in matted hair, bark garments, and loincloth, greeted him.
अमात्यान्भ्रातृवेषेण समवेषाञ्जटाधरान् । नित्यं तपः क्लिष्टतया कृशरूपान्ददर्श ह
He saw the ministers, disguised as brothers, assembled there, wearing matted hair and bark garments, their bodies emaciated from constant austerities.
रामोऽपि चिंतयामास दृष्ट्वा वै तादृशं नृपम् । अहो दशरथस्यायं राजराजस्य धीमतः
Rama, seeing such a king, began to reflect: 'Ah, this is the son of Dasharatha, the wise king of kings.'
पुत्रः पदातिरायाति जटावल्कलवेषभृत् । न दुःखं तादृशं मेऽन्यद्वनमध्यगतस्य हि
His son, coming on foot, dressed in matted hair and bark attire—no other sorrow in the forest has been like this for me.
यादृशं मद्वियोगेन चैतस्य परिवर्त्तते । अहो पश्यत मे भ्राता प्राणात्प्रियतमः सखा
The way he has changed because of separation from me—ah, look at my brother, dearer to me than life, my beloved friend.
श्रुत्वा मां निकटे प्राप्तं मंत्रिवृद्धैः सुहर्षितैः । द्रष्टुं मां भरतोऽभ्येति वसिष्ठेन समन्वितः
Hearing that I have arrived nearby, with the elders and ministers rejoicing, Bharata comes to see me, accompanied by Vasistha.
इति ब्रुवन्नरपतिः पुष्पकान्नभसोंऽगणात् । बिभीषणहनूमद्भ्यां लक्ष्मणेन कृतादरः
Thus speaking, the king, with great respect for Vibhishana, Hanuman, and Lakshmana, descended swiftly from the Pushpaka chariot from the sky.
यानादवतताराशु विरहात्क्लिन्नमानसः । भ्रातर्भ्रातः पुनर्भ्रातर्भ्रातर्भ्रातर्वदन्मुहुः
His mind dampened by separation, he quickly alighted from the vehicle, repeatedly uttering, 'Brother, brother, brother, brother,' again and again.
दृष्ट्वा समुत्तीर्णमिमं रामचंद्रं सुरैर्युतम् । भरतो भ्रातृविरहक्लिन्नं धीमान्ददर्श ह । हर्षाश्रूणि प्रमुंचंश्च दंडवत्प्रणनाम ह
Seeing Rama, surrounded by the gods, having crossed over, wise Bharata, his mind afflicted by separation from his brother, beheld him, and, shedding tears of joy, bowed down in prostration.
रघुनाथोऽपि तं दृष्ट्वा दंडवत्पतितं भुवि । उत्थाप्य जगृहे दोर्भ्यां हर्षालोकसमन्वितः
Raghunatha, seeing him fallen in prostration on the ground, lifted him up with his arms, his face radiant with joy.
उत्थापितोऽपि हि भृशं नोदतिष्ठद्रुदन्मुहुः । रामचंद्रपदांभोजग्रहणासक्तबाहुभृत्
Even when raised up, he did not stand, but wept again and again, his arms clinging to the lotus feet of Rama.
भरत उवाच। दुराचारस्य दुष्टस्य पापिनो मे कृपां कुरु । रामचंद्र महाबाहो कारुण्यात्करुणानिधे
Bharata said: 'Have mercy on me, who am wicked, sinful, and of evil conduct, O Rama, mighty-armed one, ocean of compassion, out of your kindness.'
यस्ते विदेहजा पाणिस्पर्शं क्रूरममन्यत । स एव चरणो राम वने बभ्राम मत्कृते
'She whose touch of hand you once considered harsh, O Rama, that very foot wandered in the forest for my sake.'
इत्युक्त्वाश्रुमुखो दीनः परिरभ्य पुनः पुनः । प्रांजलिः पुरतस्तस्थौ हर्षविह्वलिताननः
Having spoken thus, his face wet with tears, dejected, he embraced him again and again, and, with folded hands, stood before him, his face overwhelmed with joy.
रघुनाथस्तमनुजं परिष्वज्य कृपानिधिः । प्रणम्य च महामंत्रिमुख्यानापृच्छ्य सादरम्
Raghunatha, the treasure of compassion, embraced his younger brother, then respectfully greeted the chief ministers and inquired after their welfare.
भरतेन समं भ्रात्रा पुष्पकासनमास्थितः । सीतां ददर्श भरतो भ्रातृपत्नीमनिंदिताम्
Seated together with his brother Bharata on the Pushpaka chariot, Bharata beheld Sita, his brother's wife, beyond reproach.
अनसूयामिवात्रेः किं लोपामुद्रां घटोद्भुवः । पतिव्रतां जनकजाममन्यतननाम च
He thought of Janaka's daughter, the devoted wife, as like Anasuya, wife of Atri, or Lopamudra, wife of Agastya, and named her accordingly.
