अथ रामस्तथेति बाणमादाय वालिनमुवाच किमिष्टं दीयतां वद
Then Rama said, 'So be it,' and taking up his arrow, spoke to Vali: What do you desire? Tell me, it shall be given.
कपिरुवाच- यदि प्रसन्नो भगवान्मम सद्गतिं देहि
The monkey said: If the Lord is pleased, grant me the highest path.
अयं सुग्रीवस्तथा रक्षणीयोंऽगदोऽथ तारा च मया पापिनापराधः कृतस्तत्फलमनुभूतम्
This Sugriva must be protected; I am without disease. And Tara too—by me, a sinner, offense was committed, and its result has been experienced.
अथ रामं पश्यन्नेव वाली ममार स्वर्गं च गतः
Then, while looking at Rama, Vali died and went to heaven.
अथ सुग्रीवं राज्येऽभिषिच्य स्वयं वनं विवेश
Then, having anointed Sugriva as king, Rama himself entered the forest.
अथ तेन सहायेन जलधिसमीपं गत्वा क्व लंका क्व सीता क्व चारातिरिति सुग्रीवमाह रामः
Then, going near the ocean with that companion, Rama said to Sugriva: 'Where is Lanka? Where is Sita? Where is the enemy?'
अथ हनुमानाह प्रविश्य लंकां विचित्य सीतां सर्वतत्त्वमवगत्य युद्धं संधिर्वा कर्तव्यः तदुदधिलंघनाय किंचित्समादिशतु भगवान्
Then Hanuman said: 'Entering Lanka, searching for Sita, and understanding all the facts, either battle or peace must be made. For crossing the ocean, let the Lord instruct something.'
अथ सुग्रीवमाह रामः । कथमेतद्घटत इति
Then Rama said to Sugriva: 'How can this be accomplished?'
कपिरुवाच- मम वानरा भल्लूप्रमुखाः कोटिशः संति
The monkey spoke: 'My monkeys, headed by bears, are in the tens of millions.'
एकं नियुज्य सर्वमाकलय्य यथायुक्तं तथा करणीयम्
Appoint one, gather all, and do as is appropriate.
अथ जांबवानाह । हनूमानेको गच्छतु बुध्यतु लंकाम्
Then Jambavan said: 'Let Hanuman alone go, let him learn about Lanka.'
अथ हनूमानगमल्लंकापुरं विचित्य सीतामशोकवनिकायामासीनां तथा च संभाष्य विश्वासं कृत्वा वनं बभंज वनरक्षकांश्च
Then Hanuman went to the city of Lanka, searched for Sita, found her seated in the Ashoka grove, spoke with her, gave her confidence, broke the grove, and struck the guards.
बद्धो रक्षसा लंकां दग्ध्वा उत्तरकूलं गत्वा रामं दृष्ट्वा वृत्तांतं कथयित्वा तूष्णीमतिष्ठत्
Bound by the demon, having burned Lanka, crossing to the northern shore, seeing Rama, telling the events, he stood silent.
अथ रामः सर्वैर्विचारयामास जांबवानुवाच रामेण लंका कपिभिर्विनश्यतीति नारदेन ममोक्तम्
Then Rama considered with all; Jambavan spoke: 'By Rama, Lanka will be destroyed by monkeys—this was told to me by Narada.'
अथ सागरोत्तरणे यत्नतया स्थेयम्
Then, for crossing the ocean, effort must be made.
अथ रामः शंकरमाराध्य सर्वं निवेदयित्वा त्वदुक्तं करोमीति वचनमुक्त्वा शिवमभ्यर्च्य प्रणतो भूत्वा व्यजिज्ञपत्
Then Rama, worshipping Shankara, having offered everything, said, 'I will do as you have spoken,' and, having worshipped Shiva, bowed and made his request.

O Mahadeva, devourer of the great elements, cause of the great dissolution, adorned with great serpents, great Rudra, Shankara, supreme Lord, Virupaksha, maker of the serpent-sacred thread, clad in flayed skin, adorned with a garland of skulls of Brahma, adorned with bones from hell, ashes, beloved of Paranarayana, of auspicious conduct, first god among the five Brahmas, five-faced, four-faced, known by the Vedas, easily accessible to devotees, difficult for devotees to attain, supreme bliss and knowledge, destroyer of the teeth of the sun, cutter of Daksha’s head, remover of Brahma’s fifth head, beloved of Parvati, whose auspicious deeds are sung by Narada, Sharva, three-eyed, holder of the trident, bearer of the bow Pinaka, matted-haired, bearer of many forms, riding the bull, shining like pure crystal, four-armed, holding various weapons, Dakshinamurti, Lord, chief of the gods, Ganga-holder, destroyer of Tripura, resident of Shri Shaila, Lord of Kashi, Lord of Kedara, adorned Lord of Bhushana, Lord of Gokarna, Lord of Kanakhala, Lord of the mountain, giver of the discus, remover of Banas’ anxiety, destroyer of Mura, whose lotus feet are worshipped, adorned with Soma and Somabhuti, all-knowing, full of light, pervading the universe, I bow to you, I bow to you.
एवं स्तुवतो रामस्य पुरतो लिंगमध्यकोपेतस्तेजोमयमूर्तिराविर्बभूव
As Rama praised thus, before him, the linga became manifest, accompanied by a radiant form.
अभयवानथ पुनः पद्मासनासीनमुमाधिष्ठितांकमीशमामुक्तसर्वाभरणं सुकांतिकिरीटिनं हैमवतीकटिस्पर्शं करद्वयेनाभयवरप्रदं तरंगितानेकदिशाभिः । पूर्णतेजस्विनं हासमुखं प्रसन्नवदनं ददर्श रामः
Then, fearless, again, Rama saw the Lord seated on a lotus, with Uma on his lap, adorned with all ornaments, wearing a beautiful crown, touched at the waist by the Himalayan goddess, granting fearlessness and boons with both hands, shining in many directions, full of splendor, smiling, with a pleasant face.
परमेशितारं ननाम बद्धांजलिपुनश्च दंडवत्पपात
Rama bowed to the supreme Lord, with joined palms, and again prostrated himself.
अथ रामं परमेश्वरोऽपि वरं वृणु त्वं वरदोऽहमित्युक्तवान्
Then the supreme lord said to Rama, 'Choose a boon; I am the grantor of boons.'
राम उवाच- लंकां गमिष्यामि समुद्रतरणे उपायमेकं मम देहि शंभो
Rama said: 'I wish to go to Lanka; give me a means to cross the ocean, O Shambhu.'
शंभुरुवाच- ममाजगवं धनुरस्ति तत्कालरूपमविकल्पं वा भवति । तदारुह्य समुद्रं तीर्त्वा लंकामाप्नुहि
Shambhu said: 'I have a bow made from my own horns; it can assume any form at will. Mount it, cross the ocean, and reach Lanka.'
रामस्तथेति निश्चित्य सस्माराजगवम्
Rama, having resolved thus, remembered the horned bow.
आगतं धनुस्ततश्च रामोऽपूजयत्
The bow appeared, and Rama worshipped it.
अथ हरो धनुरादाय रामाय दत्तवान्
Then Hara took the bow and gave it to Rama.
रामोऽपि जलधावपातयत्
Rama cast it into the ocean.
आरुरुहुः सर्वे वानरा रामलक्ष्मणौ च षष्टिपरार्द्धं तेषामसंख्येषु वानरेषु धनुरारूढेषु निकामं ययौ
All the monkeys, along with Rama and Lakshmana, ascended; among the countless monkeys mounted on the bow, they proceeded with great vigor.
धनुस्तटं वानराश्च ततस्ततो गत्वा निरीक्षयामासुः
The monkeys, having gone from place to place along the bow's shore, observed everything.
अथातिकायो नाम रक्षः कपिबलमालोक्य रावणायोक्तवान्
Then a demon named Atikaya, seeing the strength of the monkeys, spoke to Ravana.
