Then there was a fist-fight between them.
Rama also struck Vali.
Vali fell, and said, 'Is it proper to strike with weapons in a weaponless fight?' His whole body became covered in blood.
Then Tara and Angada came together and were distressed.
Then the Vanaras approached Rama and fell at Vali's side, wailing loudly.
Then Tara spoke to Rama: 'O Raghava, you are skilled in the scriptures, heroic, and righteous. But even before, Rama, how did you commit this wrongful act?'
You do not know the warrior's code, honored by kings.
When two fight each other in battle, victory or death may result; but if another kills either of them, he is called a slayer of a Brahmin.
What enmity did you have with Vali, or did you desire monkey flesh?
Monkey flesh is unfit to eat; if you did this out of personal dislike or lack of pleasure, do you think others feel the same? Alas, what delusion led you to this act, you who are devoted to one wife!
If this was done to bring back Sita, carried off by Ravana, with Sugriva's help, then alas, what a great difference there is! Vali, mighty and noble, with the sun as his witness, could have brought Sita back, remembering Ravana's deed, with his army of fifty thousand crores of monkeys and bears. What could be accomplished with Sugriva, of little strength, commander of only seven crores? What success can come from following such advice?
Ah, now I understand everything you have said, O blessed one.
Rama also says: 'As a king, it is my duty to punish the wicked and protect the good. Vali took Sugriva's wife Ruma and his kingdom; therefore, there is no fault in killing such a one.'
Tara said: 'Then Sugriva too should be killed, for when Vali fought Dundubhi and entered the cave for a year, Sugriva took me and the kingdom. He should have been killed before, or now afterwards.'
Rama said: Tell me, how long ago was this?
Tara said: Sixty thousand years ago, in the eightieth year, the kingdom was taken from Sugriva by the demon in battle.
Then, after some years had passed, Sugriva was driven away by Vali, who had returned.
His wife was taken, and his kingdom was seized.
On that very day, your father Dasharatha was consecrated.
Raghava said: By my father's command, I subdued the wicked who had seized the kingdom; for the guru's word must not be transgressed, so at the time of the usurpation, whoever acted as king was punished.
Or else, Vali was slain as a free beast among beasts, for animals are condemned for tearing each other apart.
Therefore, whether by my hunting or by the animals' own actions—those who are unstable, fixed, bound, wandering, confused, or fleeing—thus, hunting releases those who have abandoned union.
According to the rules of hunting, I performed this hunt; whether seen or unseen, running or not running, in that way.
Beyond the descent, the place of the virtuous is divided; and the king's hunting is unrighteous except for the eating of meat.
Then, hearing Rama's words, all bowed their heads in trembling.
Vali spoke, placing his joined hands upon his head: Salutations to you, Rama; listen to my words.
With conch, discus, and mace in hand, clad in yellow robes, the teacher of the world—Narayana himself, manifest—you are, so I have heard.
Yogis meditate upon you, sacrificers worship you; you who consume offerings to gods and ancestors—who are you, bearing the forms of the fathers and the gods?
For one who thinks of you at death, liberation is near; by seeing you, Rama, my sins are destroyed.
Take up your arrow, Kakutstha; I am greatly distressed.
