After completing the twilight worship at the pond, Maheśa and the others finished entirely; then Śaṃbhu, facing north, performed nyāsa and began to recite.
Then Viṣṇu, of great splendor, spoke to Maheśa: 'He whom all bow to, whom all worship—'
'He who is invoked in all sacrifices—what will you recite? With hands joined in reverence, all worship you alone.'
'O Lord of gods, to whom would you, the giver of the fruits of all meritorious acts like salutations, offer joined palms?'
'Who is worthy of being worshipped by you, who gives fruits greater than you? Tell me.' Śaṅkara said: 'Govinda, I do not meditate on anything, nor do I bow to anything here.'
'O Hari, I do not worship anyone, nor will I recite anything here. But I do this for the sake of setting an example for those who are non-believers.'
'O Hari, otherwise, those who do evil would not be inclined to see you. Therefore, I have done all this for the benefit of the world.'
Then Hari, saying 'Om,' bowed to him and stood aside. Then the hosts of gods and sages arrived at Gautama’s house.
There, all performed worship for Pinākin, the Lord of gods. The god, together with Hanumat, sat singing, O best of the Raghu line.
At that time, all were reciting the great mantra of five syllables. Hara, holding Hanumat’s hand, went near the goddess.
The divine couple sat together on one couch; Hanumān, Tumburu, and Nārada sat singing.
The Supreme Lord performed various kinds of playful acts. Then the Lord called Pārvatī and spoke these words to her.
Śrī Sadāśiva said: 'I will arrange your hair in a braid before me, O auspicious one. But the goddess replied: It is not proper for a wife to be served by her husband.'
If one engages in arranging the hair, another useless matter arises; O god, in the matter of hair arrangement, the true essence is not desired at all.
Then, after the braid is made, the dust at the ends of the shoulders is to be wiped away, and the flowers and other things clinging to the body and hair are to be removed.
While this is happening, if great souls arrive, what answer should be given to your divine attendants?
If they do not come, O Lord, fear will bring about their ruin. Thus, as she was speaking, Śaṅkara drew her near with his hand.
Placing her on his own lap, he loosened her hair braid, parted it with his hands, and smoothed it even with his nails.
He took the Pārijāta garland given by Viṣṇu, which was in her hair, made a braid, and then placed the garland in her hand.
Taking the jasmine garland, he tied it in her hair, and Mahādeva also placed the wish-fulfilling flower garland given by Brahmā.
He arranged the fragrant garments of Pārvatī, and then, O Lord, wiped away what was attached to the back of her shoulder.
Seeing the loosened lower garment of the goddess slipping down, the god said, 'What is this?' and tied her waistband.
'This is not your nose ornament, I see,' he said. Then Satī herself took the pearl and examined it.
With turmeric applied, the pearl shone with brilliance. 'Let this pearl, my dear, be kept for me and you.'
Pārvatī said: 'O Śambhu, your abode is truly abundant in all things. I have already known all the objects and ornaments.'
'Indeed, wealth is known by ornaments. The head is adorned, O god, with the garland of Brahmā's head.'
'The garland of Naraka is the ornament of your chest. Śeṣa and Vāsuki, both with poison, are your bracelets.'
'The directions and the sky are your matted locks and hair; ashes are your body’s cosmetic. The great bull is your vehicle, your lineage is unknown.'
'Your parents are not known, nor is your form, O three-eyed one.' Thus, as Girijā spoke, Viṣṇu, becoming angry, said:
'Why do you reproach the god of gods, the lord of the world, O goddess? Surely, O dear one, I will give up my life, for you have no restraint.'
