Seeing the monkey before Hari, and a Maṇḍaka in Viṣṇu's dish, Maheśvara, even as the sages watched, threw it among the assembly of sages.
He gave to Hanumān his own leftovers, such as milk-rice; 'Your leftovers are not to be eaten, by your own command, O Lord.'
'Unworthy is it for me—your offering, whether leaf, flower, or fruit; whatever is offered to me, let it all be cast into a well.'
'If it is not eaten, it is certainly by your word; and if it is eaten, it is by your grace.' Sadāśiva said: 'At the self-manifested liṅga of Bāṇa, where the moonstone is present—'
'The consumption of Śambhu's offering is to be regarded as equal to a Cāndrāyaṇa vow; now is the time for eating—let any aversion be set aside.'
'After eating, I will tell you—eat without hesitation.' Then Gautama the sage performed the water-rite.

With limbs flushed, very smooth, and exceedingly delicate, washed and thoroughly dried in many ways, he filled the water-jars with water purified by rubbing and cleansing with the waters of the pond.

He covered a new sand altar of the river with pure, very white, fine cloths, and then placed water-jars filled with water on top. Placing there a bundle of lotus stalks, a packet of camphor, kankola, musk powder, and a garland pure as sandalwood and moonbeams, he set that bundle there.
Again, for the night-watch, he should purify with water and place in the jar a moonstone knot, then add bakula flowers and likewise pāṭalā flowers.

Next, placing a cluster of śephālī flowers and water there, first ensuring the water's purity, he should then wrap the mouth of the jar with a piece of very soft, fine cloth and a delicate moonstone.
Then, placing the jars in a shaded spot, where a gentle breeze blows, he should fan them with a fine fan.
Then, sprinkling the grass-ring with water from the earth, and having prepared it, men or women should be present there, O king.
There, a maiden with washed limbs, and those with clean garments, together with honey-colored, not too thick, fragrant liquid—
Applying the thick fragrance under the arms and on the neck, and placing a rosary on the head, they should anoint with the fivefold scented ointment.

With hair adorned with flowers, auspicious faces, and very pure, just so, those worthy ones, taking up forms adorned with saffron—
And young women, graceful in every limb, richly adorned with ornaments—by such women, or by monkeys like them, one should have the water brought.

At the time of offering, they wrap the betel nut with a fine cloth, or else place the nut in a vessel shaped like a crocodile; observe this.
Having untied the string from the vessel, one then gives water; in this way, the venerable sage Gautama performed the ritual of respect.

When all the great souls, including Maheśa and others, had eaten, their feet and hands were washed, and their hands were anointed with fragrant powders.

At that time, Maheśvara, lord of gods, was seated on his seat; while the gods and the hosts of sages sat in lower places.

He wrapped pieces of areca nut, well-perfumed, in jewel vessels—some angular, round, large, small, and slender.

Having cleaned white leaves and placed pieces of camphor and powder, Gautama then offered them to Śaṃkara.

The sage said, 'Take the betel, O Lord.' The monkey replied, 'Take the betel and give me the pieces.'
The monkey said, 'O Maheśvara, I am not pure; having eaten many fruits, how can a monkey be pure?'
Sadāśiva said: 'By my word, all is purified; by my word, poison becomes nectar; by my word, all the Vedas and the deities arise.'
'By my word comes knowledge of dharma; by my word, liberation is declared; the Purāṇas, Āgamas, and Smṛtis are all from my word.'
'Therefore, take the betel and give me the pieces.' Hari took the betel and areca nut with his left hand.
Then, gathering the leaves, he offered the pieces; camphor was placed in front, and Śiva took and ate them.
When the gods had finished with the betel, Pārvatī, from Mount Mandara, took the hands of Jayā and Vijaya and entered the sage's house.
Then, bowing to the feet of the goddess, she became humble-faced; raising her face, the three-eyed one spoke to her.
