Those men who do not delight in other men's wives and are steadfast in virtue are destined for heaven, as are those who always perform prescribed actions as enjoined.
Those men who act according to their own ability are destined for heaven, as is the one who always has faith in righteousness of mind, speech, and body.
He who is approved by the virtuous is considered a guest of the gods; he who restrains the impulse of speech, the impulse of mind, and the urge arising from the belly—
He who endures the urge of the sexual organ is born as one who attains heaven; those who are content with their own virtues and whose speech is respectful toward what is heard—
Those whose minds are fixed on the highest truth are the noble ones destined for heaven; those who keep their vows from anger and protect their wealth from envy—
Those who do not become proud of knowledge due to honor or dishonor, who guard their intellect from greed and their mind from desire—
Those men who protect righteousness from bad company are destined for heaven, as are those who are devoted to fasting on Ekadashi according to rule.
O Brahmin, those men who observe (fasts) on both the bright and dark fortnights are destined for heaven; like a mother to all children, like medicine to the sick—
For the protection of all worlds, the Ekadashi lunar day was created; there is nothing equal to Ekadashi, not even a fraction, as a means of deliverance.
Those who observe it according to the prescribed method, O twice-born, become fit for heaven; whatever sin is committed by the eleven senses—
A man, having quickly cast off that sin, becomes joyful and attains heaven; even a thousand Ashvamedha sacrifices and a hundred Rajasuya sacrifices—
Do not equal even a sixteenth part of the merit of fasting on Ekadashi; on one side are all the sacrifices and all the austerities at holy places—
On one side are great gifts and other donations, and on the other, the Vaishnava vow; the dharma born of the Vaishnava vow surpasses the dharma arising from sacrifices and the like.
If both are weighed together by the Creator, the former (Vaishnava vow) would be heavier; for devotees who speak endlessly of Acyuta on Hari's day—
I am not especially the ruler over them, O Brahmin; I am afraid of those whose sons and grandsons have observed Ekadashi.
Along with himself, such a man forcibly uplifts a hundred people; therefore, one should observe the fast in both fortnights.
On Ekadashi, that person becomes the sole recipient of both enjoyment and liberation; Jaya, Vijaya, and Jayanti—destroyers of sin—
Trisprisha, Vamjuli, Paksha-samvardhini the excellent, Tiladugdha the supreme, and also Akhanda Dvadashi—
Manoratha by name, and also Bhima Dvadashi; thus, these and others are the many forms of Dvadashi.
Those who are able to observe these vows are to be known as established in Brahman; listeners of the Dharma-shastras, united in faith in dharma—
And those dear to children, they attain the world of heaven; men who perform the Shraddha vow on the day of the new or full moon each month—
Their ancestors are satisfied, and they are blessed, destined for heaven; among the foods offered, whatever is given with respect—
With an unchanging expression and proper conduct, those people are destined for heaven.
Those who are devoted to Madhusudana, to Narayana, the Lord of all, even if lacking in truth or possessed of passion, they go to heaven, possessed of endless merit.
Those of virtuous conduct who serve the holy rivers—Vitasta, Yamuna, Sita, and the sacred Godavari—devoted to bathing and giving gifts—
They never see the path to hell; those who bathe in the Narmada, the giver of happiness, are satisfied even by her sight.
Having cast off their sins, they go to the world of the Great Lord and there they delight for a long time.
Those men who, having bathed on the bank of the Carmanadi, observe restraint for three nights—especially at Vyasa's hermitage—are regarded as dwellers of heaven.
Those who die in the waters of the Ganga at Prayaga, at Kedara, at Pushkara, at Vyasa's hermitage, or at Prabhasa, they proceed to the realm of Vishnu.
Those who die in Dvaravati or Kurukshetra, or through the practice of yoga, and for whom the syllable 'Hari' is on their lips, do not experience rebirth.
