हैतुको नास्तिको यस्तु स नरो निरयालयः । मनसा योऽन्यभावेन वचसा चान्यथा वदेत्
Whoever is a reasoner and an atheist, that person is a dweller in hell. One who, with his mind, harbors one thing but speaks otherwise—
हृदयं कलुषं कुर्यात्स नरो नरके वसेत् । अवमन्य च ये यांति भगवत्कीर्तनं नराः
One who makes his heart impure, that person dwells in hell. And those people who show disrespect when attending the praise of the Blessed Lord—
ते यांति नरकं घोरं तेन पापेन कर्मणा । पश्यंतो भगवद्द्वारं नामशास्त्र परिच्छदम्
Those who, by that sinful deed, go to the terrible hell, even while seeing the gateway to the Lord and the paraphernalia of the scriptures by name.
अकृत्वा तत्प्रणामादि ते यांति नरकौकसः । विनापराधेन नराः कृत्वा पत्न्यधिवेदनम्
Without offering proper salutations there, those men go to hell; and those who, without any fault, speak harshly to their wives.
त्यजंति सुकलत्रं ये ते यांति नरके नराः । न शृणोति गुरोर्वाक्यं धर्मशास्त्रं च यो नरः
Those men who abandon a virtuous wife go to hell; and he who does not listen to the words of the teacher or to the scripture of righteousness.
परेषां चेतसः क्लेशकारी निरयगो भवेत् । पश्यतां बंधु बालानां प्रकर्षी मिष्टमश्नुते
Whoever causes distress to the minds of others becomes a dweller in hell; while in the presence of relatives and children, he enjoys abundant pleasures.
स याति नरकं घोरं केवलोदरपूरकः । तुला मकर मेषेषु प्रातः स्नानं न यश्चरेत्
He who is concerned only with filling his own belly goes to terrible hell; and he who does not bathe in the morning when the sun is in Libra, Capricorn, or Aries.
नद्यादिषु च नास्तिक्यस्तस्य स्यान्नरकालयः । वैष्णवं जनमालोक्य नाभ्युत्थानं करोति यः
And in rivers and such places, the one who is faithless—his abode is hell; and he who, seeing a devotee of Vishnu, does not rise in respect.
प्रणयादरतो विप्र स नरो नरकातिथिः । काष्ठैर्वा शंकुभिर्वापि शूलैरश्मभिरेव च
O Brahmin, the man who does not greet with affection and respect becomes a guest of hell; and those who block the paths with wood, stakes, spears, or stones.
ये मार्गांश्चैव रुंधंति ते वै निरयगामिनः । आद्यं पुरुषमीशानं सर्वलोकमहेश्वरम्
Those who obstruct the paths in this way surely go to hell; and those who do not contemplate the Supreme Person, the Lord of all worlds.
न चिन्तयंति ये विष्णुं ते वै निरयगामिनः । क्षेत्रवृत्ति गृहच्छेदं प्रीतिच्छेदं च ये नराः
Those who do not think of Vishnu indeed go to hell; and those men who destroy fields, houses, or break bonds of affection.
आशाच्छेदं च कुर्वंति ते नरा नरकौकसः । आगतान्भोजनार्थं च ब्राह्मणान्वृत्तिकर्शितान्
Those men who cut off hope also dwell in hell; and the fool who examines Brahmins who have come for food, worn out by their livelihood.
यः परीक्षेत मूढात्मा स ज्ञेयो नरकातिथिः । अनाथं वैष्णवं दीनं रोगार्तं वृद्धमेव च
He, the deluded one, should be known as a guest of hell; and those who do not show compassion to the helpless, the devotees of Vishnu, the poor, the sick, or the elderly.
नानुकंपंति ये मूढास्ते वै निरयगामिनः । नियमांस्तु समादाय ये पश्चादजितेंद्रियाः
Those fools who do not show compassion surely go to hell; and those who, after taking vows, later violate them due to uncontrolled senses.
विलोपयंति तान्भूयस्ते वै निरयगामिनः । शृणु विप्र यथा यांति नराः स्वर्गं दयालवः
Those who repeatedly break such vows surely go to hell; now listen, O Brahmin, how compassionate men attain heaven.
समासेनैव वक्ष्यामि किंचित्ते गौरवादहम् । येऽर्चयंति हरिं देवंजिष्णुं विष्णुं सनातनम्
I will briefly tell you, out of respect, how this is so; those who worship Hari, the victorious, eternal Vishnu.
नारायणमजं कृष्णं विष्वक्सेनं चतुर्भुजम् । ध्यायंति पुरुषं दिव्यमच्युतं ये स्मरंति च
Those who meditate on Narayana, the unborn, Krishna, Vishvaksena, the four-armed one, and remember the divine, imperishable Person.
लभंते तेऽच्युतस्थानं श्रुतिरेषा पुरातनी । इदमेवहि मांगल्यमिदमेव धनार्जनम्
They attain the abode of the infallible; this is the ancient teaching. Indeed, this alone is auspiciousness, this alone is the gaining of wealth.
जीवितस्य फलं चैतद्यद्दामोदरकीर्तनम् । कीर्तनाद्देवदेवस्य विष्णोरमिततेजसः
This is truly the fruit of life: the praise of Damodara; by the praise of Vishnu, the god of gods, of immeasurable splendor.
दुरितानि विलीयंते तमांसीव दिनोदये । गाथां गायंति ये नित्यं वैष्णवीं श्रद्धयान्विताः
Sins are dissolved, just as darkness at the rise of day; those who, endowed with faith, sing daily the Vaishnava hymn.
स्वाध्यायनिरता नित्यं ते नराः स्वर्गगामिनः । सर्वान्क्लेशान्परित्यज्य विष्णुमेव स्तुवंति ये
Those men who are always devoted to self-study, who give up all afflictions and praise only Vishnu, are destined for heaven.
स्वधर्मनिरता धीरास्ते नराः स्वर्गगामिनः । वासुदेवजपासक्तानपि पापकृतो जनान्
Those men who are steadfast in their own duty and firm-minded are destined for heaven, as are even sinners who are absorbed in reciting the name of Vasudeva.
नोपसर्पन्ति तान्विप्र यमदूताश्च दारुणाः । नान्यत्पश्यन्ति जंतूनां विहाय हरिकीर्तनम्
O Brahmin, the fierce messengers of Yama do not approach those men; they see nothing else in living beings except the praise of Hari.
सर्वपापप्रशमनं प्रायश्चित्तं द्विजोत्तम । ये याचिताः प्रहृष्यंति प्रियं दत्वा वदंति च
O best of twice-born, those who, when asked, joyfully give what is dear and speak kindly, are the destroyers of all sins and the true atonement.
त्यक्तदानफला ये च ते नराःस्वर्गगामिनः । वर्जयंति दिवास्वापं नराः सर्वसहाश्च ये
Those men who have renounced the fruit of giving are destined for heaven, as are those who avoid sleeping during the day and are tolerant of all.
पर्वण्याश्रयभूता ये ते मर्त्याः स्वर्गगामिनः । द्विषतामपि ये दोषान्न वदंति कदाचन
Those mortals who take shelter in sacred observances on festival days are destined for heaven, as are those who never speak of the faults of even their enemies.
कीर्तयंति गुणांश्चैव ते नराः स्वर्गगामिनः । ये परेषां श्रियं दृष्ट्वा न वितप्यंति मत्सरात्
Those men who praise the virtues of others are destined for heaven, as are those who, seeing the prosperity of others, do not grieve out of envy.
प्रहृष्टाश्चाभिनंदंति ते नराः स्वर्गगामिनः । प्रवृत्तौ च निवृत्तौ च श्रुतिशास्त्रोक्तमेव च
Those men who rejoice and congratulate others are destined for heaven, as are those who honor what is prescribed in the scriptures regarding both action and renunciation.
आदरंति प्रतीता ये ते नराः स्वर्गगामिनः । यस्मिन्कस्मिन्कुले जाता दयावंतो यशस्विनः
Those men who are devoted and steadfast are destined for heaven, whatever family they are born into, if they are compassionate and renowned.
सानुक्रोशाः सदाचारास्ते नराः स्वर्गगामिनः । ये पूताः परदारांश्च कर्मणा मनसा गिरा
Those men who are merciful and of good conduct are destined for heaven, as are those who are pure in deed, thought, and word toward the wives of others.
