He thinks day and night, deluded, 'How shall I obtain good fortune? How shall I gain sons?'
In the midst of worry, he perceives great happiness for a moment; but then, regaining awareness, he is afflicted by great sorrow.
Abandoning worry and delusion, follow that path, O twice-born; in this world, there is no true connection with anyone, O wise one.
Friends, relatives, sons, father, mother, and likewise daughters—these are one's own relations, as are wife and others.
Devaśarman said: 'O blessed one, what kind of relation is this? Tell me in detail, by which all these—wealth, sons, and relatives—arise.'
Sumana said: 'Lord, five kinds of sons are born; I shall tell you of them: one who steals a trust, one bound by debt—these are foremost.'
'An enemy, one who is neutral, and so, beloved, these are the types. I shall describe their characteristics to you, O lord, each separately.'
Sons, friends, beloved wife, father, mother, and relatives—all are born on earth through their own distinct connections.
When something entrusted is taken away by someone on earth, the owner of the deposit becomes the son, endowed with virtue and beauty, in this world.
There is no doubt that the one who took the deposit will experience suffering in the house of the owner; having committed the theft of the deposit, he departs after enduring severe pain.
The owner of the deposit becomes a good son, and the thief of the deposit is born as his son, endowed with virtues, beauty, and all auspicious marks.
Becoming his son, he shows devotion to him day by day, speaking sweet and pleasant words, and displaying great affection.
Having taken back his own wealth and producing great joy, just as it was given by him, this surpasses even the act of stealing the deposit.
O greatly fortunate one, such suffering is harsh and life-destroying; thus, as his son, he gives that kind of pain, though possessing great qualities.
Becoming short-lived, he meets with death; having given pain, he departs in this way, being struck again and again.
When someone laments, saying 'my son, my son,' at that time he becomes an object of ridicule—who is truly a son, and whose son is anyone?
By this sinner, my entrusted wealth was taken away; by the theft of my property, truly, my very life was taken.
In the past, with great and unbearable suffering, I gave that pain and took back my excellent wealth.
Thus ends the eighty-seventh chapter in the section on the glory of Vaiśākha in the Pātāla-khaṇḍa of the glorious Padma Purāṇa.
Chapter eighty-nine. Nārada said: Thus addressed, the excellent brāhmaṇa Devaśarman again spoke to his dear wife, who was wise and knowledgeable.
"What you have said, O good lady, is true and removes all doubts; indeed, the virtuous and wise desire a lineage."
"Just as I am concerned for a son and not for wealth, O beloved, by any means I will produce a son."
Sumanā said: "With a son, one conquers the worlds; a son uplifts the family. O greatly fortunate one, with a good son, the ancestors and parents truly live on."
"One son is better, O lovely one; what use are many who lack virtue? One alone uplifts the lineage; others only bring distress."
"I have already said before: others are merely related by connection; a son is obtained by merit, and a family is obtained by merit."
"A good womb is obtained through merit, and untimely death through sin; the accumulation of happiness, O beloved, I truly declare to you."
By celibacy, by truthfulness, by austerity, by constant observances, by giving, and by self-restraint, as well as by forgiveness and purity, O beloved—
And also by non-violence to the best of one's ability, and by not stealing, one proceeds; by these ten limbs, thus, dharma is produced.
Dharma becomes complete through its limbs, just as an embryo in the womb; the one whose nature is dharma creates dharma by threefold action.
His dharma, with a serene mind, bestows virtue and happiness; whatever the wise man contemplates, he attains, even if it is difficult to obtain.
