Whoever, according to the proper rites, offers oblations to the gods and ancestors in her, the mortal sees Ganga herself, purified and freed from sin after bathing.
No month equals Madhava, no river equals Ganga; this union is truly rare, attainable only through devotion to Hari.
Born from the water at Vishnu’s feet, arriving from Brahma’s world, tireless in her three streams, she purifies the three worlds.
She is the ladder to heaven, the giver of constant joy, remover of countless sins, and rescuer from misfortune.
Dwelling in the matted locks of the glorious Mahesha, destroyer of sorrow, she ends the playful suffering of those who worship her.
She brings liberation to the lineage of Sagara, upholds righteousness, travels the three paths, and adorns the worlds as a goddess.
Through sight, touch, bathing, praise, meditation, and service, she purifies thousands of people, both virtuous and non-virtuous.
By uttering 'Ganga, Ganga, Ganga' at the three junctions of the day, even those far away have their sins destroyed, accumulated over three lifetimes.
Even if a man remembers the Ganga from thousands of yojanas away, though he has committed evil deeds, he attains the highest state.
Especially rare is she on the seventh day of the bright half of Vaiśākha; she is attained, O protector of the earth, by the grace of Hari and the Brahmins.
There is no month equal to Mādhava, nor any lord like Mādhava; he has crossed the ocean of sins for those who are sinking in it.
Whatever is given, recited, offered in fire, or performed as bathing with devotion in the month of Mādhava, O king, that merit becomes inexhaustible, exceeding a hundred million times.
As among the gods the universal soul is the god Nārāyaṇa Hari, as among recitations the Gāyatrī, and among rivers the Jāhnavī, so too—
As Umā is foremost among all women, as the sun among those who shine, as health among gains, and as the Brahmin among bipeds—
As beneficence is the highest among virtues, the Veda among knowledges, the syllable Om among mantras, and self-contemplation among meditations—
As truth and adherence to one's own duty are best among austerities, as purity of wealth among purities, and fearlessness among gifts—
As the destruction of greed is considered the chief among virtues, so Mādhava is regarded as the best among months.
Whatever śrāddha, sacrifice, gift, fasting, austerity, study, or worship is performed then, its fruit is said to be inexhaustible.
At the end of Vaiśākha, sins come to an end, darkness ceases with the sun, and good deeds reach their completion, as do harm and slander.
Whatever bathing, giving, or other acts are performed in the month of Kārtika, when the sun is in Libra, O king, their merit becomes doubled.
Therefore, when the sun is in Capricorn during Māgha, the merit is a thousandfold; and when the sun is in Aries during Vaiśākha, it is counted as a hundred times more than that.
Blessed and virtuous are those men who, in the month of Vaiśākha, bathe in the morning according to rule and worship the slayer of Madhu.
Morning bathing in Vaiśākha, sacrifice, giving, fasting, offering of oblations, and celibacy—all these destroy great sins.
Again, in the Kali age, O king, this will become secret, for the greatness of Mādhava is equal to that of the Aśvamedha and the like.
The meritorious Aśvamedha sacrifice is not performed in the Kali age; this rule of Mādhava month is equal to the horse sacrifice.
The merit of the Aśvamedha, which bestows heaven and liberation, will not be known by sinful people of evil intellect in the Kali age.
There, by evil deeds, people must traverse the ocean of hell; yet the path created by him is rare in its occurrence.
Thus ends the eighty-fifth chapter in the section on the glories of the month of Vaiśākha, in the Pātāla Khanda of the Padma Purāṇa.
Chapter eighty-seven. Sūta said: Hearing these words of Nārada, the king, astonished, bowed and spoke, contemplating Hari in his mind.
Ambarīṣa said: How is it, O sage, that we are bewildered? With such little effort, merely by bathing, one attains a result exceedingly rare.
