Women and shudras, however, are devoted to worship by name alone; Madhava is not satisfied by rituals, sacrifices, or vows.
He is satisfied only by devotion, for he is called the lover of devotion; for women devoted to their husbands, the husband alone is the deity.
He should be worshipped with devotion to Vishnu, by actions of mind, speech, and body; with faith, one should think of the husband as Vishnu in the heart.
For shudras also, worship of the deity is by name alone; all should perform according to the scriptural path, in conformity with the Veda.
Women too have authority in the worship of Vishnu and related acts; this is the eternal teaching for those devoted to pleasing their husbands.
Whatever vow is prescribed for each according to their own family duty, that alone should be practiced; by that, Keshava is pleased.
The wise always worship Hari with offerings in fire, in water, with flowers, with meditation in the heart, and with recitation in the solar orb.
Non-violence is the first flower, taking up the vow is the second; compassion for beings is the third, and forbearance is the fourth.
Calmness is the fifth flower, self-control the sixth, meditation the seventh, and truth the eighth; by these, Keshava is pleased.
Indeed, Hari is worshipped and satisfied by these eight flowers alone; other flowers are external, O best of men.
By acts performed with devotion, Viṣṇu is worshipped and becomes fully satisfied: with water from Varuṇa, flowers, gentle offerings, clarified butter, milk, and curds.
Also with food and grains belonging to Prajāpati, incense and lamps for Agni, fruits and flowers, and the fifth—offerings from forest trees.
Earthly offerings such as kuśa grass and roots, fragrant sandalwood for the wind, faith called Viṣṇu's flower, and music—these are remembered as Viṣṇu's offerings.
Worshipped with these flowers, Viṣṇu is pleased: the sun, fire, brāhmaṇas, cows, the Vaiṣṇava, the sky, wind, and water.
The earth, the soul, all beings—these are places of worship for Hari. One should offer oblations to the sun with mantra-recitation, and to fire with sacrificial offerings.
By hospitality to the foremost brāhmaṇas, by feeding cows with grass and water, by honoring relatives among the Vaiṣṇavas, and by steadfast meditation in the heart.
With focused mind to the wind, with substances offered to water, on the ground with mantras from the heart, and by offering oneself to the self.
One should worship the knower of the field, the Lord present equally in all beings. In these seats, his form is to be worshipped, bearing the conch, discus, mace, and lotus.
Meditating with concentration on him, endowed with four arms, peaceful and adorned with those emblems, one should worship. There is no doubt that he is worshipped when brāhmaṇas are worshipped.
And, O king, if those brāhmaṇas are insulted, the Lord himself is insulted. The Veda and the Dharmaśāstra are established upon them.
Those brāhmaṇas are regarded as the supreme, purifying form of Viṣṇu.
All auspiciousness in the world is attained only through righteousness; righteousness and the ultimate goal come from the Veda and the king’s law. Indeed, even their attainment on earth is through honoring the earth-gods; by honoring them here, the Lord of the world is honored.
Not by sacrifices, not by austerities, not by yogic practices, nor by other forms of worship, does the Lord of gods become as pleased as he does by honoring the deities of the earth.
He who is devoted to Brahman, who knows Brahman, who is Brahmā, who sets forth the Veda—he is satisfied only by brāhmaṇas; when they are satisfied, the divine Brahman is satisfied.
Even ancestors from both family lines who have long been sunk in hell, at that very moment attain heaven when a son worships Hari.
What is the value of their lives here, or of actions like those of animals, for those whose minds are not inclined toward Vāsudeva, the soul of the universe?
I will declare to you his meditation, which has not been seen by anyone. Listen, O king, to the pure, stainless meditation of liberation.
Just as a lamp placed in a windless spot, unmoving and untouched by air, burns steadily and dispels all darkness, O wise one—
In this way, the self, free from faults, indeed becomes without affliction; without hope, unmoving, heroic—he is not an enemy, nor is anyone his foe.
He is released from sorrow and joy, despondency, greed, envy, delusion, agitation, confusion, error, and from pleasure and pain.
