या त्वया जानकी प्रोक्ता साहं जनकपुत्रिका । स रामो मां यदाभ्येत्य प्राप्स्यते सुमनोहरः
I am she whom you called Jānakī, the daughter of Janaka; that supremely charming Rāma will come and obtain me.
तदा वां मोचयाम्यद्धानान्यथा वाक्यलोभिता । लालयामि सुखेनास्तां मद्गेहे मधुराक्षरौ
Then I will surely release you both, or else, enticed by your words, I will fondly keep her in my house with happiness, O sweet-voiced ones.
इत्युक्तं तत्समाकर्ण्य वेपतुर्भयतां गतौ । परस्परं प्रक्षुभितौ जानकीमित्यवोचताम्
When she had spoken thus and they heard it, the birds trembled in fear; agitated, they addressed Jānakī together.
वयं वै पक्षिणः साध्वि वनस्था वृक्षगोचराः । परिभ्रमाम सर्वत्र नो सुखं नो भवेद्गृहे
We are but birds, O virtuous lady, dwelling in the forest among the trees; we wander everywhere—there is no happiness for us in a house.
अंतर्वत्नी स्वके स्थाने गत्वा संसूय पुत्रकान् । त्वत्स्थानमागमिष्यामि सत्यं मे ह्युदितं वचः
Let my mate remain in her own place and hatch the young; after that, I will come to your abode—my words are truly spoken.
एवं प्रोक्ता तया सा तु न मुमोच शुकीं स्वयम् । तदापतिस्तां प्रोवाच विनीतवदनुत्सुकः
Though thus addressed by him, she did not release the female parrot; then her mate, eager yet humble, spoke to her.
सीते मुंच कथं भार्यां रक्षसे मे मनोहरीम् । आवां गच्छाव विपिने विचरावः सुखं वने
O Sītā, release my beloved wife—how can you keep her captive? Let us both go into the forest and wander happily there.
अंतर्वत्नी तु वर्तेत भार्या मम मनोरमा । तस्याः प्रसूतिं कृत्वा त्वामागमिष्यामि शोभने
Let my mate, my lovely wife, remain there; after she has given birth, O beautiful one, I will come to you.
इत्युक्ता निजगादेमं सुखं गच्छ महामते । एतां रक्षामि सुखिनीं मत्पार्श्वे प्रियकारिणीम्
Thus addressed, she replied: 'Go happily, O wise one; I will keep her safe and content, performing loving acts at my side.'
इत्युक्तो दुःखितः पक्षी तामूचे करुणान्वितः । योगिभिः प्रोच्यते यद्वै तद्वचस्तथ्यमेव हि
Thus spoken to, the sorrowful bird said to her with compassion: 'What is spoken by yogis is indeed true.'
न वक्तव्यं न वक्तव्यं मौनमाश्रित्य तिष्ठताम् । नोचेत्स वाक्यदोषेण प्राप्नोत्यालानमुन्मदः
'One should not speak, one should not speak—let them remain in silence; otherwise, through the fault of speech, a madman meets with bondage.'
वयं चेदत्र वाक्यं नाकरिष्याम नगोपरि । बंधनं कथमावां स्यात्तस्मान्मौनं समाचरेत्
'If we had not spoken these words here, atop the mountain, how could this bondage have come upon us? Therefore, one should practice silence.'
इत्युक्त्वा तां प्रत्युवाच नाहं जीवामि सुंदरि । एतया भार्यया सीते तस्मान्मुंच मनोहरे
Having said this, he replied to her, 'O beautiful one, I cannot live with this wife, O Sītā; therefore, let her go, O charming one.'
अनेकविधवाक्यैः सा बोधिता नामुचत्तदा । कुपिता दुःखिता भार्या शशाप जनकात्मजाम्
Though addressed with many kinds of words, she did not let go at that time; angered and distressed, the wife cursed the daughter of Janaka.
यथा त्वं पतिना सार्धं वियोजयसि मामितः । तथा त्वमपि रामेण वियुक्ता भव गर्भिणी
Just as you separate me here from my husband, so too, may you, while pregnant, be separated from Rāma.
इत्युक्तवत्यां तस्यां तु दुःखितायां पुनः पुनः । प्राणा निरगमन्दुःखात्पतिदुःखेन पूरितात्
As she spoke thus, again and again, in her grief, her life departed due to sorrow, filled with the pain of her husband.
रामं रामं स्मरंत्याश्च वदंत्यांश्च पुनः पुनः । विमानमागतं सुष्ठु पक्षिणी स्वर्गता बभौ
As she remembered Rāma and called out his name again and again, a splendid aerial chariot arrived, and the bird-wife appeared to ascend to heaven.
तस्यां मृतायां दुःखार्तो भर्ता तस्याः स पक्षिराट् । परमं क्रोधमापन्नो जाह्नव्यां दुःखितोऽपतत्
When she had died, her husband, the king of birds, afflicted with grief, fell into the Jahnavī river, overwhelmed by intense anger.
तथा भवामि रामस्य नगरे जनपूरिते । मद्वाक्यादियमुद्विग्ना वियोगेन सुदुःखिता
So shall it be in Rāma's city, filled with people; because of my words, she will be disturbed, and deeply afflicted by separation.
इत्युक्त्वा स पपातोदे जाह्नव्या भ्रमशोभिते । दुःखितः कुपितो भीतस्तद्वियोगेन कंपितः
Having said this, he fell into the beautiful, flowing Jahnavī, suffering, enraged, fearful, shaken by that separation.
क्रुद्धत्वाद्दुःखितत्वाच्च सीताया अपमाननात् । अंत्यजत्वं परं प्राप्तो रजकः क्रोधनाभिधः
Because of anger, grief, and the dishonor of Sītā, the washerman named Krodhana attained the state of an outcaste at the end of his life.
यः क्रोधाच्च स्वकान्प्राणान्महतां दुष्टमाचरन् । संत्यजेत्स मृतो याति अंत्यजत्वं द्विजोत्तमः
He who, out of anger, commits a great wrong and abandons his own life, O best of twice-born, upon death attains the state of an outcaste.
तज्जातं रजकोक्त्यासौ निंदिता च वियोगिता । रजकस्य च शापेन वियुक्ता सा वनं गता
Thus, because of the washerman's words, she was reproached and abandoned; and by the washerman's curse, she was separated and went to the forest.
एतत्ते कथितं विप्र यत्ते पृष्टं विदेहजाम् । पुनरत्र परं वृत्तं शृणुष्व निगदामि तत्
O brāhmaṇa, thus I have told you what you asked about the daughter of Videha; now listen as I recount what happened next.
सप्तषष्टितमोऽध्यायः 5.67 शेष उवाच। अथ सौमित्रिरागत्य जानकीं नतवान्मुहुः । प्रेमगद्गदया शंसन्वाचं रामप्रणोदिताम्
Śeṣa said: Then Saumitri approached and bowed repeatedly to Jānakī, and, his voice choked with love, conveyed Rāma's message as instructed.
सीता समागतं दृष्ट्वा लक्ष्मणं विनयान्वितम् । तन्मुखाद्रामसंदेशं श्रुत्वोवाच विलज्जिता
Seeing Lakṣmaṇa, who had come with humility, Sītā, after hearing Rāma's message from his lips, spoke, feeling ashamed.
सौमित्रे कथमागच्छे रामत्यक्ता महावने । तिष्ठामि रामं स्मरन्ती वाल्मीकेराश्रमे त्वहम्
O Saumitri, how can I go, abandoned by Rāma, into the great forest? I will remain here, remembering Rāma, in Vālmīki's hermitage.
तस्या मुखोदितं वाक्यं श्रुत्वा सौमित्रिरब्रवीत् । मातः पतिव्रते रामस्त्वामाकारयते मुहुः
Hearing these words spoken from her mouth, Saumitri said, 'Mother, Rāma, devoted to his wife, calls you again and again.'
पतिव्रता पतिकृतं दोषं नानयते हृदि । तस्मादागच्छ हि मया स्थित्वा स्यंदन उत्तमे
A devoted wife does not hold in her heart any fault committed by her husband; therefore, come with me and ascend the excellent chariot.
इत्यादि वचनं श्रुत्वा जानकी पतिदेवता । मनोरोषं परित्यज्य तस्थौ सौमित्रिणा रथे
Hearing these words, Jānakī, devoted to her husband, abandoned her anger and stood upon the chariot with Saumitri.
