विप्रस्य शिवभक्तस्य वैकुंठाप्तिर्यथाभवत् । एकस्तु ब्राह्मणो राजन् हेरंबो नाम धार्मिकः
How a Brahmin devoted to Shiva attained Vaikuntha—there was a righteous Brahmin named Heramba.
कायेन मनसा वाचा शिवपूजारतः सदा । एकदा स महाभागः शिवतीर्थानि पर्यटन्
Always devoted to the worship of Shiva in body, mind, and speech, that blessed one once traveled to the holy places of Shiva.
शिवभक्तः शिवे राजन्शिवकांच्यामिहागतः । एनां मनोहरां चैव न तत्याज स बुद्धिमान्
O King, that devotee of Shiva came here to Shivakanchi; he, wise as he was, did not abandon this enchanting place.
पश्चात्तत्रैव तत्याज प्राणानस्या जलांतरे । तत्रैव श्रीमहादेवगणास्तं ब्राह्मणोत्तमम्
Later, right there, he gave up his life in the water; there, the hosts of the glorious great Lord received that foremost Brahmin.
नीत्वा कैलासमचलं चेलुस्तदनुशासनात् । अथ मध्ये समायाता गणा वैकुंठतो हरेः
Having brought the mountain Kailāsa, they moved it at his command; then, in the midst, the hosts from Hari's Vaikuṇṭha arrived.
तेभ्यो बलात्समादातुं तं द्विजश्रेष्ठमुद्यताः । आसीत्तेषां महयुद्धं गणानां हरिशर्वयोः
Intent on seizing that foremost of twice-born by force from them, there arose a great battle between the hosts of Hari and Śarva.
तत्र युद्धेन वैकेषां विजयो न पराजयः । तत्र वैकुंठतो विष्णुरागतो गरुडासनः
In that battle, there was neither victory nor defeat for the hosts of Viṣṇu; then Viṣṇu himself came from Vaikuṇṭha, seated upon Garuḍa.
कैलासाद्वृषभारूढो महेशश्च त्रिलोकधृक् । तावन्योन्यं मुखं दृष्ट्वा विहस्य जगदीश्वरौ
From Kailāsa, Maheśa, the upholder of the three worlds, arrived mounted on the bull; seeing each other's faces, the two Lords of the universe smiled.
पश्यतस्म महद्युद्धं नभस्येव गणैः कृतम् । अथ स्वीयान्गणान्विष्णुः शैवांश्च दिवि युद्धतः
As they watched that great battle waged in the sky by the hosts, then Viṣṇu restrained his own hosts and the Śaiva hosts from fighting in heaven.
निवार्य तं द्विजं तार्क्ष्यमारोप्यागाच्छिवालयम् । शिवेन तद्गणैश्चापि स्वकीयैरपि माधवः
He placed that twice-born upon Garuḍa and, having restrained the battle, went to Śiva's abode; Śiva, along with his hosts, and Mādhava with his own, accompanied him.
वृतो गछन्पथि श्रीमान्स्तुतस्त्रिदशवंदितः । गत्वा विवेश तं चागं महादेवपुरःसरः
Honored and praised by the gods as he went along the path, the illustrious one, led by Mahādeva, entered that place.
तस्मै द्विजाय वै तस्य दर्शयन्रमणीयताम् । अथ तस्मात्तु कैलासान्महादेवेन वंदितः
To that twice-born, he showed its beauty; then, honored there by Mahādeva, he departed from Kailāsa.
माधवः परया भक्त्या वैकुंठमगमत्तदा । द्विजः सोऽपि महाभागस्तीर्थस्यास्य प्रसादतः
With supreme devotion, Mādhava then went to Vaikuṇṭha; that twice-born, greatly fortunate, by the grace of this holy place,
गोविंददर्शनं प्राप्य मुमुदे हरसन्निधौ । एतत्ते कथितं राजन्शिवकांच्यास्तु वैभवम्
Having obtained a vision of Govinda, rejoiced in the presence of Hara; thus, O King, has the glory of Śivakāñcī been told to you.
तीर्थसप्तकनाम्नस्तु शृणुष्व सुसमाहितः । तीर्थमेतन्महाराज चतुर्वर्गफलप्रदम्
Now hear, with full attention, of the holy place called the Seven Fords; this holy place, O great king, bestows the fruits of the four aims of life.
दर्शनात्स्पर्शनाद्ध्यानात्स्मरणादपि भूपते । वसिष्ठादिभिरेतस्मिन्महर्षिभिरनुष्ठितम्
By seeing, touching, meditating upon, or even remembering it, O king, it has been practiced here by Vasiṣṭha and other great sages.
महत्तपस्तु सृष्ट्यर्थं तत्रासंस्तु क्षमा नृप । मरीचिरपि धर्मात्मा पुत्रार्थं स्नानमाचरन्
There, for the purpose of creation, the great sages performed severe austerities, O king; Marīci, too, devoted to righteousness, performed bathing rites for the sake of a son.
अत्र लेभे महाभागः कश्यपं सुतमुत्तमम् । अत्रिरत्रापि तपसा तोषयद्देवपुंगवान्
There, the greatly fortunate one obtained Kaśyapa, an excellent son; Atri also, by his austerity, pleased the foremost of the gods there.
सोमं दुर्वाससं दत्तं तेभ्यो लेभे सुतत्रयम् । अंगिरा अपि धर्मात्मा तीर्थस्यास्य प्रसादतः
He obtained three sons—Soma, Durvāsas, and Datta—from them; Aṅgiras, too, devoted to righteousness, by the grace of this holy place,
लेभे सुतांस्तुतद्वंश्या जाता आंगिरसा द्विजाः । पुलहोऽपि सुतं लेभे दंभोलि गुणवत्तरम्
Obtained sons, and from them were born the Aṅgirasa Brāhmaṇas; Pulaha also obtained a son there, Dambholi, endowed with virtues.
योऽगस्त्योभूत्पुरा राजंस्तीर्थेऽत्रैव निमज्जनात् । पुलस्त्यस्यात्र तीर्थे वै पुत्रो लब्धो तपस्यतः
He who became Agastya, O King, was born here from immersion in this holy place; Pulastya, too, obtained a son here through austerity.
कुबेरोभून्महाभागो यः सखासीदुमापतेः । क्रतोरपि सुता जाता वालखिल्याः सहस्रशः
Kubera, the greatly fortunate, who was a friend of the Lord of Uma, was born here; and to Kratu, thousands of Vālakhilya sons were born.
तीर्थस्यास्य प्रसादेन ते सर्वे ह्यूर्ध्वरेतसः । रजआदीन्सुताँ लेभे वसिष्ठोऽपि महातपाः
By the grace of this sacred place, all those who are celibate attained sons, and even the great ascetic Vasiṣṭha obtained sons such as Rajā and others.
सप्तैव राजशार्दूल महिमा तस्य वर्णितः । अन्यान्यपि च तीर्थानि संत्यनेकानि भूपते
O best of kings, thus the greatness of this place has been described; there are also many other sacred sites, O ruler of the earth.
कपिलाश्रमकेदारप्रभासादीनि वै प्रभौ । नियुतैरपि वर्षाणां तेषां च महिमा नृप । अनंतेनापि नो वक्तुं शक्यते किमु मादृशैः
Kapila's hermitage, Kedara, Prabhasa, and others, O king, even in tens of thousands of years, their greatness cannot be fully spoken, not even by those like me.
सौभरिरुवाच- एवमुक्त्वा मुनिश्रेष्ठो नारदो मुनिपुंगवः । शिवं जगाम नभसो नारायणगुणान्गृणन्
Saubhari said: Having spoken thus, the foremost sage Nārada, the eminent sage among ascetics, departed through the sky, praising the virtues of Nārāyaṇa.
शिबिरौशीनरो राजा शक्रप्रस्थस्य वैभवम् । श्रुत्वा मुनिमुखाद्राजन्कृतार्थं स्वममन्यत
King Śibi of the Uśīnara lineage, having heard from the sages about the glory of Indraprastha, considered himself fulfilled.
तत्र स्नात्वा हि विधिवदिंद्रप्रस्थे स भूपतिः । विधाय सत्क्रियाः सर्वा जगाम निजपत्तनम्
There, after bathing according to the proper rites at Indraprastha, that king performed all the prescribed ceremonies and returned to his own city.
इंद्रप्रस्थस्य माहात्म्यमेतत्तव मया विभो । यमुनातीरतीर्थस्य वर्णितं जनपावनम्
O mighty one, I have described to you the greatness of Indraprastha, the purifier of people, and the sacred place on the banks of the Yamunā.
नास्यादरं करिष्यंति कलौ श्रद्धाविवर्जिताः । इंद्रप्रस्थस्य राजेंद्र सर्वतीर्थशिरोमणेः
In the age of Kali, those devoid of faith will not show respect for this, O king of Indraprastha, the crest-jewel of all sacred places.
