In the vast ocean of tales about Rāvaṇa’s enemy, what is someone like me but a mere mosquito? Even Brahmā and the other gods are bewildered there and do not comprehend.
Yet, O noble one, I must speak to you according to my own ability; just as birds travel through the sky by their own flight.
The deeds of Rāghunātha are spread over hundreds of millions; each recounts them according to the measure of their own understanding.
The pure and flawless glory of Rāghunātha, by its very contact, will refine my mind, just as fire purifies gold.
Sūta said: Having spoken thus to that great sage, with eyes absorbed in meditation, he perceived by knowledge the auspicious, transcendent tale.
His voice choked with emotion, his body marked by great joy, he began again to narrate clearly the story of the son of Daśaratha.
Śeṣa said: When the lord of Laṅkā was slain, bringing grief to gods and demons, the moon-like radiance of the apsarās’ lotus faces was taken away.
Then all the gods, beginning with Indra, attained happiness; having found joy, they offered praise and bowed down like servants.
Establishing Bibhīṣaṇa, righteous in conduct, in Laṅkā, Rāma, together with Sītā, ascended the Puṣpaka chariot.
Then, accompanied by Sugrīva, Hanumān, Sītā, and Lakṣmaṇa, and with Bibhīṣaṇa following with his ministers, eager from separation.
As he gazed upon Laṅkā, with its many broken ramparts and gateways, seeing the Aśoka grove there, Sītā’s place, he fainted.
There he saw the śiṃśapā trees and other trees, blooming and laden with buds, crowded with rākṣasīs who had died from fear of Hanumān.
Thus, having swiftly observed everything, Rāma set out for his city, accompanied by Brahmā and the other gods in their own aerial chariots.
Hearing the auspicious sounds of divine drums, pleasing to the ear, and honored by the dances of the apsarās, Rāma, best of the Raghu line, proceeded.
On the way, he showed Sītā the sacred fords and hermitages, as well as the sages, their sons, and the devoted wives of the sages.
Wherever Rāma, the wise, had formerly stayed, he showed her all those places, accompanied by Lakṣmaṇa.
Thus, as he showed her these places, Rāma beheld his own city; and near it, he saw the village of Nandigrāma.
There, indeed, Bharata ruled as king, established in righteousness, bearing many marks of sorrow caused by separation from his brother.
Lying in a pit, practicing celibacy, adorned with matted hair and bark garments, his body thin and staff-like, afflicted by suffering, he repeatedly recites the story of Rama.
He does not eat even barley food, nor does he drink water often; after bowing to the rising sun, he speaks thus:
O Lord of gods, eye of the world, remove my great misdeed; for my sake, even Rama, worshipped by the world, went to the forest.
Attended by Sita, whose limbs are delicate, he entered the forest; that Sita, once resting on a flower couch, now, having encountered adversity, is distressed.
That Sita, who never experienced the torment of the sun, now, for my sake, Janaki, wanders through the wilds—alas!
That Sita, whom royal assemblies never beheld with their eyes, is now surely seen by hunters, grim in appearance.
That Sita, who ate sweet food and never felt hunger, now, dwelling in the forest, longs for fruits—alas!
Thus, every morning, after approaching the sun, he speaks these words; day after day, the great king Bharata, beloved of Rama.
When addressed by ministers, wise in both sorrow and joy, skilled in policy and scripture, the king spoke to them thus:
O ministers, why do you call me unfortunate, the lowest of men? For my sake, my elder brother Rama, having reached the forest, is suffering.
I, unfortunate, perform the expiation of my sin with devotion, repeatedly remembering the feet of Rama, O Sumant.
Blessed indeed is Sumitra, mother of a hero and devoted to her husband, whose son daily serves the feet of Rama.
