ब्राह्मणी पंचगव्यं तु पंचरात्रं पिबेद्द्विज । गोद्वयं दक्षिणां दद्याच्छुध्यत्यत्र न संशयः
The Brahmin woman should drink Panchagavya for five nights, O twice-born; she should give two cows as a gift—there is no doubt she is purified.
परांगनां यदागच्छेत्कृच्छ्रं सांतपनं चरेत् । यथार्गला तथा योषित्तस्मात्तां परिवर्जयेत्
When one goes to another man's wife, he should undertake the Santapana Kricchra penance; just as a bolt bars, so should a woman be avoided.
वर्णबाह्यां तथा नीचामनुगच्छेत्सकृन्नरः । प्राजापत्यं चरेत्कृच्छ्रं शुद्ध्यत्येव न संशयः
If a man goes even once to a woman outside the castes or of low status, he should perform the Prajapatya Kricchra; he is certainly purified, without doubt.
अंगारसदृशी योषित्सर्पिः कुंभसमः पुमान् । तस्याः परिसरे ब्रह्मन्न स्थातव्यं कदाचन
A woman like burning charcoal, a man like a vessel of ghee—O Brahman, one should never remain in their vicinity.
जारेण जनयेद्गर्भं या च नारी कुलांतका । त्याज्या सा सर्वथा ब्रंह्मस्तत्र दोषो न विद्यते
A woman who, by an adulterer, conceives a child and brings ruin to her family—she is to be abandoned in every way, O Brahman; in this, there is no fault.
या च नारी गृहाद्गच्छेत्त्यक्त्वा बंधून्स्वकानपि । नष्टा सा च कुलभ्रष्टा न तस्याः संगमः पुनः
And a woman who leaves her home, abandoning even her own relatives—she is lost, fallen from her family; there must never be union with her again.
या च नारी यदा गच्छेन्मोहिता परपूरुषम् । प्राजापत्यं चरेत्कृच्छ्रं पंचगव्यं पिबेत्ततः
When a woman, deluded, goes to another man, she should perform the prājāpatya penance and then drink the five products of the cow.
गोद्वयं तु ततो दद्याच्छुध्यत्येव न संशयः । ब्राह्मणी बालिशा ब्रह्मन्मोहिता परपूरुषम्
Afterwards, she should give two cows; she is purified, without doubt. O Brahman, a Brahmin woman, foolish and deluded, who goes to another man—
यदा गच्छेत्तदा त्याज्या जनैर्दोषो न विद्यते । यो गच्छेद्ब्राह्मणीं विप्र भूसुरः काममोहितः । गो तिलांश्च तदा दद्याच्छुद्ध्यत्यत्र न संशयः
When she goes, she should be abandoned by people; there is no fault in this. If a Brahmin, O sage, deluded by desire, goes to a Brahmin woman, then he should give cows and sesame seeds; he is purified, without doubt.
शौनक उवाच। अज्ञानात्प्राश्य विण्मूत्रं सुरां संस्पृश्य वा पुनः । यथा शुद्धिर्भवेत्तेषां कथयामि शृणु द्विज
Śaunaka said: If someone unknowingly eats excrement or urine, or touches liquor again, I will tell you how purification is achieved for them; listen, O twice-born.
प्राजापत्यद्वयं कुर्य्यात्तीर्थाभिगमनं मुने । वृषैकादशगोदानं सशिखं वपनं ततः
He should perform two prājāpatya penances, visit holy places, give eleven bulls, and then shave his head with the tuft.
गत्वा चतुष्पथं सर्वं प्राजापत्यव्रतं तथा । गोद्वयं तु ततो दद्यात्पंचगव्यं पिबेत्ततः
He should go to a crossroads and perform the full prājāpatya vow; afterwards, he should give two cows and drink the five products of the cow.
ब्राह्मणान्भोजयित्वा तु शुद्ध्यत्यत्र न संशयः । चांडालान्नं जलं चैव ज्ञानतोऽपि विपत्तिषु
After feeding Brahmins, he is purified, without doubt. Even knowingly, in cases of calamity, if one eats food or drinks water from a Chandala—
यदि भुङ्क्ते नरः कश्चित्कृच्छ्रं चांद्रायणं चरेत् । सशिखं वपनं कृत्वा पंचगव्यं ततः पिबेत्
If any man eats such food, he should perform the kṛcchra and cāndrāyaṇa penances, shave his head with the tuft, and then drink the five products of the cow.
एकद्वित्रिचतुर्गावो देयाद्विप्रेष्वनुक्रमात् । वृषलान्नं सूतकान्नं अभोज्यान्नं जलं च वै
He should give one, two, three, or four cows to Brahmins in succession. Food from outcastes, food from those in impurity, forbidden food, and water—
शूद्रोच्छिष्टं यदा भुंक्ते ज्ञानतो वा विपत्तिषु । प्राजापत्यद्वयं कुर्याच्चांद्रायणत्रयं तथा
When one eats leftovers from a Śūdra, or knowingly in cases of calamity, he should perform two prājāpatya penances and three cāndrāyaṇa penances.
गोद्वयं तु ततो दद्यात्पंचगव्यं पिबेद्द्विज । हुत्वा ह्यग्नौ बहून्विप्रान्भोज्यशुद्धो भवेद्ध्रुवम्
Afterwards, he should give two cows and drink the five products of the cow, O twice-born. By offering to the fire and feeding many Brahmins, he is certainly purified.
आखुनकुलमार्ज्जारैरन्नं चेद्भक्षितं द्विज । तिलदर्भोदकैः प्रोक्ष्य शुद्ध्यत्येव न संशयः
If food is eaten by a mouse, mongoose, or cat, O twice-born, then sprinkling it with sesame and darbha water purifies it, without doubt.
पलांडुं लशुनं शिग्रुमलाबुं गृंजनं पलम् । भुंक्ते यो वै नरो ब्रह्मन्व्रतं चांद्रायणं चरेत्
Whoever eats onion, garlic, drumstick, bottle gourd, coriander, or radish, O Brahman, should perform the cāndrāyaṇa vow.
मद्यमांसप्रियं शूद्रं नीचकर्म्मानुवर्त्तनैः । तं शूद्रं वर्जयेद्विप्र श्वपाकमिव दूरतः
A Śūdra who loves liquor and meat, and follows base actions, O Brahmin, should be avoided like a dog-eater, from a distance.
द्विजसेवानुरक्ता ये मद्यमांसविवर्जिताः । दान स्वकर्म्मनिरतास्ते ज्ञेया वृषलोत्तमाः
Those who are devoted to serving the twice-born, abstain from liquor and meat, are engaged in giving and their own duties—these should be known as the best among outcastes.
अज्ञानाद्भुंजते विप्र सूतके मृतके यदि । गायत्रीदशभिर्विप्रः सहस्रैश्च शुचिर्भवेत्
If, O Brahmin, someone unknowingly eats food during impurity or after death, then by reciting the Gāyatrī ten thousand times, he becomes pure.
सहस्रैः क्षत्रियश्चैव वैश्यः पंचसहस्रकैः । पंचगव्यैर्भवेच्छुद्धो वृषलोऽपि तपोधन
A Kṣatriya should recite it a thousand times, a Vaiśya five thousand times; even an outcaste, O ascetic, is purified by the five products of the cow.
आज्यं तु तोयं नीचस्य भांडस्थं दधि यः पिबेत् । अज्ञानतोऽपि यो वर्णः प्राजापत्यव्रतं चरेत्
Whoever drinks clarified butter, water, or curds kept in the vessel of a low-caste person, even unknowingly, should perform the prājāpatya vow.
दानं बहुतरं दद्याच्छुद्धो ह्यग्नौ यथाविधि । शूद्राणां नोपवासोऽपि दानेनैव विशुद्ध्यति
One should give abundant gifts, purified as prescribed, just as offerings are made to fire; for Śūdras, even fasting does not purify, but only giving does.
सशिखं वपनं कुर्यादहोरात्रोपवासतः । नीचैर्दंडादिभिश्चैव ताडितो यो नरो द्विज
He should shave his head with the tuft, and fast for a day and night; the twice-born man who is struck by lowly implements such as a staff.
प्राज्ञापत्यव्रतं कुर्य्याच्चांद्रायणव्रतं तु वा । सशिखं वपनं चैव पंचगव्यं पिबेत्ततः
He should undertake the Prājāpatya vow or the Cāndrāyaṇa vow; then shave his head with the tuft and drink the five products of the cow.
गोद्वयं तु ततो दद्यादग्नौ चान्नादिकं हुतम् । मद्यपानं गृहे विप्र ज्ञानतोऽपि यदृच्छया
Afterwards, he should give two cows and offer food and other items into the fire; if a Brāhmaṇa knowingly or accidentally drinks alcohol at home.
यदि भुंक्ते नरः कश्चित्पात्यः सोऽपि कुलान्नरः । गोबीजहंता यो विप्रच्छेदकश्च दलस्य च
If any man eats such food, he too is to be punished, as is his family; one who kills a cow or destroys a Brāhmaṇa, or splits a pulse.
स्वर्णस्तेयी भवेत्कृच्छ्रं प्राजापत्यत्रयं चरेत् । सशिखं वपनं कृत्वा पंचगव्यं तथा पिबेत्
A gold thief should perform three Prājāpatya penances; after shaving his head with the tuft, he should also drink the five products of the cow.
