ततो विप्र प्राप्तकालः पंचत्वं स जगाम ह । काकयोनौ पुनर्जन्म लेभेऽसौ विड्भुजः सदा
Then, O brāhmaṇa, when his time came, he died and was born again as a crow, always an eater of filth.
एकस्मिन्दिवसे विप्र श्रीहरेश्चरणोदकम् । द्वारदेशेस्थितं पीत्वा सर्वपापविवर्जितः
One day, O brāhmaṇa, he drank the water that had washed the feet of Śrī Hari, which was situated at the threshold, and was freed from all sins.
तस्मिन्नेव दिने काकः पतितः शबरस्य च । काले मृत्युदशां प्राप्तो व्याधेन वायसोपि च
On that very day, the crow fell at the house of a Śabara, and at that time, struck by disease, the crow met its death.
आगते स्यंदने दिव्ये राजहंसयुते शुभे । आरुह्य बलिभुग्विप्र ययौ स हरिमंदिरम्
When a splendid chariot, yoked with royal swans, arrived, the brāhmaṇa, eater of offerings, mounted it and went to the abode of Hari.
पादोदकस्य माहात्म्यं कथितं पापनाशनम् । यः शृणोति नरः पापी तस्य पापं विनश्यति
The greatness of the water that has washed the feet is thus told, which destroys sin; whoever, even if sinful, hears this, his sin is destroyed.
शौनक उवाच। अगम्यागमनं सूत कुर्याद्यो वै विमोहितः । तस्य शुद्धिर्भवेत्केन कथयस्व समूलतः
Śaunaka said: O Sūta, if someone, deluded, approaches a woman he must not, how can he be purified? Tell me in detail.
सूत उवाच। अभिगच्छति चांडालीं श्वपाकीं यो द्विजोत्तमः । उपवासत्रयं कुर्यात्प्राजापत्यं चरेत्ततः
Sūta said: If a twice-born approaches a caṇḍālī or a woman who eats dog’s flesh, he should perform a three-day fast and then undertake the prājāpatya penance.
सशिखं वपनं चैव दद्याद्गोद्वयमेव च । यथार्थदक्षिणां दत्वा शुद्धिमाप्नोति स द्विजः
He should shave his head, leaving the śikhā, and give two cows with proper gifts; having given the appropriate fee, that brāhmaṇa attains purity.
क्षत्त्रियो वापि चांडालीं वैश्यो वा यदि गच्छति । प्राजापत्यं सकृच्छ्रं च दद्याद्गोमिथुनद्वयम्
If a Kshatriya or a Vaishya goes to a Chandali woman, he should perform the Prajapatya penance once and give two pairs of cattle.
अनुगच्छति शूद्रो हि श्वपाकीं च तपोधन । चतुर्गोमिथुनं दद्यात्प्राजापत्यं व्रतं चरेत्
If a Shudra approaches a woman who cooks dog-meat, O ascetic, he should give four pairs of cattle and observe the Prajapatya vow.
मातरं यदि वा गच्छेद्भगिनीं स्वसुतामपि । वधूं च मोहितो गच्छंस्त्रीणि कृच्छ्राण्यथाचरेत्
If one goes to his mother, sister, daughter, or is deluded and goes to his daughter-in-law, he should undertake three Kricchra penances.
चांद्रायणत्रयं कृत्वा दद्याद्गोमिथुनत्रयम् । सशिखं वपनं कृत्वा पंचगव्यं पिबेत्ततः
Having performed three Chandrayana vows, he should give three pairs of cattle; after shaving his head with the tuft, he should then drink Panchagavya.
हुते ह्यग्नौ तथाप्यत्र शुद्ध्यत्येवं तपोधन । पितृदारान्द्विजश्रेष्ठ मातुश्च भगिनीं तथा
When the fire has been offered, even then, O ascetic, he becomes purified in this way; O best of twice-born, regarding the wife of the father, the mother, and the sister likewise.
गुरुपत्नीं मातुलानीं भ्रातुर्भार्यां स्वगोत्रजाम् । यदि गच्छति मोहेन प्राजापत्यद्वयं चरेत्
If, out of delusion, one goes to the wife of the teacher, the wife of the maternal uncle, the wife of a brother, or a woman of one's own lineage, he should perform the Prajapatya vow twice.
चांद्रायणत्रयं ब्रह्मन्पंचगोमिथुनानि च । विप्रेभ्यो दक्षिणां दद्याच्छुध्यते नात्र संशयः
O Brahman, having performed three Chandrayana vows and given five pairs of cattle, he should give a gift to the Brahmins; there is no doubt he becomes purified.
गां च गच्छति यो मूढ उपवासत्रयं चरेत् । धेनुं दत्त्वा तथा चान्नं शुद्ध्यत्यत्र न संशयः
He who, out of folly, goes to a cow should observe three fasts; by giving a cow and also food, he is purified—of this there is no doubt.
वेश्यां खरीं शूकरीं च कपिं तुं महिषीं द्विज । आकंठतः समाक्षिप्य गोमयोदककर्द्दमे
O twice-born, if one forcibly embraces a prostitute, a she-ass, a sow, a monkey, or a she-buffalo, up to the neck in a mixture of cow dung, water, and mud—
तत्र तिष्ठेन्निराहारो त्रिरात्रेणैव शुद्ध्यति । सशिखं वपनं कृत्वा त्रिरात्रमुपवासयेत्
There, remaining without food, he becomes purified in three nights; after shaving his head with the tuft, he should fast for three nights.
एकरात्रं जले स्थित्वा शुद्ध्यत्येव न संशयः । ब्राह्मणीं तु यदा गच्छेत्यो नरः काममोहितः
By standing in water for one night, he is certainly purified, without doubt. But if a man, overcome by desire, goes to a Brahmin woman—
प्राजापत्यत्रयं कुर्य्याच्चांद्रायणत्रयं तथा । गोत्रयं तु तथा दद्याच्छुद्ध्यत्येव तपोधन
He should perform three Prajapatya penances, three Chandrayana vows, and also give three cows; O ascetic, he is certainly purified.
ब्राह्मणी पंचगव्यं तु पंचरात्रं पिबेद्द्विज । गोद्वयं दक्षिणां दद्याच्छुध्यत्यत्र न संशयः
The Brahmin woman should drink Panchagavya for five nights, O twice-born; she should give two cows as a gift—there is no doubt she is purified.
परांगनां यदागच्छेत्कृच्छ्रं सांतपनं चरेत् । यथार्गला तथा योषित्तस्मात्तां परिवर्जयेत्
When one goes to another man's wife, he should undertake the Santapana Kricchra penance; just as a bolt bars, so should a woman be avoided.
वर्णबाह्यां तथा नीचामनुगच्छेत्सकृन्नरः । प्राजापत्यं चरेत्कृच्छ्रं शुद्ध्यत्येव न संशयः
If a man goes even once to a woman outside the castes or of low status, he should perform the Prajapatya Kricchra; he is certainly purified, without doubt.
अंगारसदृशी योषित्सर्पिः कुंभसमः पुमान् । तस्याः परिसरे ब्रह्मन्न स्थातव्यं कदाचन
A woman like burning charcoal, a man like a vessel of ghee—O Brahman, one should never remain in their vicinity.
जारेण जनयेद्गर्भं या च नारी कुलांतका । त्याज्या सा सर्वथा ब्रंह्मस्तत्र दोषो न विद्यते
A woman who, by an adulterer, conceives a child and brings ruin to her family—she is to be abandoned in every way, O Brahman; in this, there is no fault.
या च नारी गृहाद्गच्छेत्त्यक्त्वा बंधून्स्वकानपि । नष्टा सा च कुलभ्रष्टा न तस्याः संगमः पुनः
And a woman who leaves her home, abandoning even her own relatives—she is lost, fallen from her family; there must never be union with her again.
या च नारी यदा गच्छेन्मोहिता परपूरुषम् । प्राजापत्यं चरेत्कृच्छ्रं पंचगव्यं पिबेत्ततः
When a woman, deluded, goes to another man, she should perform the prājāpatya penance and then drink the five products of the cow.
गोद्वयं तु ततो दद्याच्छुध्यत्येव न संशयः । ब्राह्मणी बालिशा ब्रह्मन्मोहिता परपूरुषम्
Afterwards, she should give two cows; she is purified, without doubt. O Brahman, a Brahmin woman, foolish and deluded, who goes to another man—
यदा गच्छेत्तदा त्याज्या जनैर्दोषो न विद्यते । यो गच्छेद्ब्राह्मणीं विप्र भूसुरः काममोहितः । गो तिलांश्च तदा दद्याच्छुद्ध्यत्यत्र न संशयः
When she goes, she should be abandoned by people; there is no fault in this. If a Brahmin, O sage, deluded by desire, goes to a Brahmin woman, then he should give cows and sesame seeds; he is purified, without doubt.
शौनक उवाच। अज्ञानात्प्राश्य विण्मूत्रं सुरां संस्पृश्य वा पुनः । यथा शुद्धिर्भवेत्तेषां कथयामि शृणु द्विज
Śaunaka said: If someone unknowingly eats excrement or urine, or touches liquor again, I will tell you how purification is achieved for them; listen, O twice-born.
