And where wicked-minded people eat kala, buka, or onions, in their homes your place shall be, without doubt.
Where there is neglect of teachers, gods, and guests, and where sacrifice and charity are absent, and where the sound of the Veda is not heard—there, O inauspicious one, always remain.
Where there is quarrel between husband and wife, and no worship of ancestors or gods, and where people are addicted to secret pleasures—there, O inauspicious one, always remain.
Where people are attached to others' wives, steal others' wealth, and where there is no respect for brāhmaṇas, the good, or the elderly—there, bringer of sin and poverty, always remain.
Thus instructing the eldest of the goddesses, beloved of Kali and all, they once again, with full concentration, began to churn the Ocean of Milk.
Sūta said: Then Airāvata was born, and likewise the horse Uccaiḥśravā; Dhanvantari, the Pārijāta tree, Surabhi the cow, and the emergence of the Apsarases.
Then, at dawn on the twelfth day, as the sun rose, there appeared Śrī Mahālakṣmī, adorned with all auspicious marks.
The deities of Dharma, delighted, beheld that great goddess, the mother of all beings, who dwells in the heart of Śrī Kṛṣṇa.
The cool-rayed one, Lakṣmī’s brother, was then born from the nectar; and Tulasī, purifier of the worlds, arose as Hari’s consort.
Placing that mountain as before, their desires now fulfilled, they gathered, praised the Mother, and recited the supreme Śrī Sūkta.
Then, pleased, the goddess addressed all the gods: 'Choose a boon, may good befall you; I am the granter of boons, O best of gods.'
The gods said: 'Be gracious, O lotus-eyed goddess, mother of all, beloved of Hari; without you, the world is empty—grant protection to life.'
Thus addressed, Mahālakṣmī, beloved of Nārāyaṇa, replied: 'Now I shall protect the lives of all beings.'
Then Nārāyaṇa, glorious, bearing conch, discus, and mace, compassionate Lord of the universe, suddenly appeared.
Thereupon, the gods, bowing with folded hands, praised the Lord of the worlds, their voices choked with joy.
They said: 'O Viṣṇu, accept the Mother, your beloved queen Lakṣmī, unfailing, for the protection of the world.' As they made their request, Indirā addressed Hari.
Lakṣmī said: 'Madhusūdana, how can you wish to marry me, the younger, without first marrying Jyeṣṭhā, the elder Alakṣmī? When the elder remains unmarried, the younger cannot be wed.'
Sūta said: Hearing this, Viṣṇu then gave Alakṣmī, in accordance with the Vedic injunctions, to Uddālaka along with the immortals.
Then Nārāyaṇa, glorious, accepted Lakṣmī; and all the hosts of gods bowed to them again and again.
Then, all the powerful gods slew all the asuras; and those asuras, crying out, fled in all ten directions.
The gods then arranged themselves in order to partake of the nectar, and by the command of Śrī Viṣṇu, they spoke to one another.
They said, 'You give, you give, you give,' and others replied, 'I am not able, I am not able, I am not able.'
Then Viṣṇu arose and assumed the form of a woman; he served that nectar in a golden vessel.
As long as Rāhu, O best of twice-born, was about to partake of the nectar, the Moon and the Sun spoke out; that demon had come there by deceit.
Then the Lord of the Universe, enraged, struck him from the golden vessel; his head fell to the earth and became known as Ketu.
Rāhu and Ketu, terrified, quickly fled; now, on that day, he fights with the Moon and the Sun.
The son of Siṃhikā would seize them in that moment, which becomes difficult; all water is like the Gaṅgā, and all twice-born are like Vyāsa.
Whoever bathes at the Vāyasa Tīrtha obtains the fruit of bathing in the Gaṅgā; giving there yields inexhaustible merit, as if earned over millions of births.
Sin is utterly destroyed there—what need to speak of the merit of millions of sacrifices? One seeking knowledge attains knowledge, one desiring a son obtains a son.
One seeking liberation attains liberation; mantra accomplishment is certain. Thus, O brāhmaṇa, the churning of the ocean has been told to you.
