तुलसीमूलमृत्स्नैव स्नानं कुर्याद्विशेषतः । तेन तीर्थे कृतं स्नानं यावच्चांगे च मृत्तिका
If one bathes especially with earth from the root of tulasi, it is as if he has bathed at a sacred place, as long as that earth remains on his body.
तदीय यातु मंजर्या पूजनं च करोति यः । नानापुष्पैः कृता पूजा यावच्चंद्रदिवाकरौ
Whoever performs worship with a cluster from that plant, such worship with various flowers endures as long as the moon and sun exist.
यस्मिन्गृहेऽवतिष्ठेत तुलसी वृक्षवाटिका । दर्शनात्स्पर्शनाच्चैव ब्रह्महत्यादिपातकम् । तत्सर्वं विलयं याति दर्शनेनैव नारद
In whatever house there is a grove of tulasi, by seeing or touching it, all sins such as the killing of a Brahmin are destroyed, O Narada, simply by seeing it.
महादेव उवाच- अथान्यत्ते प्रवक्ष्यामि शृणुष्वैकाग्रमानसः । न कस्यापि च कथितं शृणु देवर्षिसत्तम
Mahadeva said: Now I will tell you something else; listen with focused mind. This has not been told to anyone; hear it, O best of divine sages.
यत्र यत्र गृहे ग्रामे वने वा तुलसी भवेत् । तत्र तत्र जगत्स्वामी प्रीतात्मा च वसेद्धरिः
Wherever there is tulasi, in a house, village, or forest, there the Lord of the universe, pleased in heart, resides.
गृहे तस्मिन्न दारिद्र्यं नायोगो बंधुसंभवः । न दुःखं न भयं रोगस्तुलसी यत्र तिष्ठति
In that house there is no poverty, no misfortune from relatives, no suffering, no fear, nor disease, where tulasi stands.
सर्वत्र तुलसी पुण्या पुण्यक्षेत्रे विशेषतः । संनिधौ तस्य देवस्य रोपणात्पृथिवीतले
Tulasi is sacred everywhere, especially in holy places; by planting it in the presence of that deity on the earth,
तेषां विष्णुपदं नित्यं तुलस्यारोपणे कृते । उत्पादान्दारुणान्रोगान्दुर्निमित्तान्यनेकशः । तुलस्याभ्यर्चिते भक्त्या हंत शांतिकरो हरिः
For those who plant tulasi, Vishnu's abode is assured; and by worshipping tulasi with devotion, Hari brings peace, removing many severe diseases and inauspicious omens.
तुलसीगंधमाघ्राय यत्र गच्छति मारुतः । दिशो दश च ताः पूता भूतग्रामश्चतुर्विधः
Wherever the wind carries the fragrance of tulasi, all ten directions are purified, along with the four kinds of beings.
यस्मिन्गृहे मुनिश्रेष्ठ तुलसीमूलमृत्तिका । सर्वदा तत्र तिष्ठंति देवताश्च शिवो हरिः
O best of sages, in any house where the soil at the root of tulasi is found, there always reside the deities, Shiva, and Hari.
तुलसीवनजा छाया यत्र यत्र भवेद्दिवज । तर्पणं कुरुते तत्र पितॄणां दत्तमक्षयम्
Wherever the shade of a grove of tulasi falls, there, offerings made to the ancestors become inexhaustible.
तस्य मूले स्थितो ब्रह्मा मध्ये देवो जनार्दनः । मंजर्यां वसते रुद्रः तुलसी तेन पावनी
At its root dwells Brahma, in the middle the god Janardana, and on the flower Rudra resides; thus tulasi is purifying.
विना यस्तुलसीं कुर्यात्संध्याकाले तु मार्जनम् । तत्सर्वं राक्षसहृतं नरकं च प्रयच्छति
Whoever performs purification at twilight without tulasi, all that is taken by demons and leads to hell.
तुलसीपत्रगलितं तोयं यः शिरसावहेत् । गंगाफलमवाप्नोति शतधेनुफलं लभेत्
Whoever pours water fallen from tulasi leaves upon his head attains the merit of the Ganga and receives the fruit of a hundred cows.
शिवालये विशेषेण रोपयेत्तुलसीं यदि । बीजसंख्या वसेत्स्वर्गे प्रत्येकं युगसंख्यया
If one especially plants tulasi in a temple of Shiva, for each seed sown, one dwells in heaven for as many ages.
उमया तु पुरा देवि शंकरार्थं हिमालये । रोपिताः शतवृक्षास्तु तुलस्याः प्रणतोऽस्म्यहम्
Long ago, O goddess, Uma planted a hundred tulasi trees in the Himalayas for Shankara; I bow to them.
पर्वण्यवसरे यस्तु श्रावणे चाथ रोपयेत् । संक्रांतिदिवसे चैव तुलसी चातिपुण्यदा
Whoever plants tulasi on festival occasions, in the month of Shravan, or on the day of the sun's transit, tulasi grants great merit.
तुलसीं पूजयेन्नित्यं दरिद्र ईश्वरो भवेत् । सर्वसिद्धिकरामूर्तिः कृष्णः कीर्तिं ददाति च
Whoever worships tulasi daily, though poor, becomes a lord; Krishna, the giver of all accomplishments, bestows fame.
शालग्रामशिला यत्र तत्र संनिहितो हरिः । तत्र स्नानं च दानं च वाराणस्यां शताधिकम्
Wherever the Shalagrama stone is found, Hari is present; bathing and giving there yields a hundred times the merit of Varanasi.
कुरुक्षेत्रं प्रयागं च नैमिषारण्यमेव च । तस्य कोटिगुणं पुण्यं शालग्रामशिलार्चनात्
Kurukshetra, Prayaga, and Naimisha forest—worship of the Shalagrama stone there gives merit a crore times greater.
शालग्राममयी मुद्रा संस्थिता यत्र हि क्वचित् । वाराणस्यां च यत्पुण्यं सर्वं तत्रैव तद्भवेत्
Wherever a ring made of Shalagrama is kept, all the merit of Varanasi is found there.
ब्रह्महत्यादिकं पापं यत्किंचित्कुरुते नरः । तत्सर्वं नाशयेदाशु शालग्रामशिलार्चनात्
Whatever sin a person commits, even killing a Brahmin, all is swiftly destroyed by worship of the Shalagrama stone.
नारदउवाच- एवं तुलस्या माहात्म्यं त्वत्प्रसादाच्छ्रुतं मया । सांप्रतं तु समाचक्ष्व त्रिरात्रं तुलसीव्रतम्
Narada said: Thus, by your grace, I have heard the greatness of tulasi; now please tell me about the three-night tulasi vow.
सदाशिव उवाच- शृणु विप्र महाबुद्धे व्रतमेतत्पुरातनम् । यच्छ्रुत्वा सर्वपापेभ्यो मुच्यते नात्र संशयः
Sadashiva said: Listen, O wise Brahmin, to this ancient vow; hearing it, one is freed from all sins—there is no doubt.
पुरा रैभ्यंतरे कल्पे राजा ह्यासीत्प्रजापतिः । तस्य भार्या च विख्याता चंद्ररूपा महासती
Long ago, in the Raibhya interval of a kalpa, there was a king, Prajapati; his wife, renowned and moon-faced, was a great chaste woman.
सा वै व्रतमिदं चक्रे सर्वकामफलप्रदम् । त्रिरात्रं तु व्रतं तस्या धर्मकामार्थ मोक्षदम्
She performed this vow, which grants all desired fruits; her three-night vow bestowed dharma, wealth, pleasure, and liberation.
सफलं जीवितं तेषां यैः श्रुतं तुलसीव्रतम् । कार्तिके शुक्लपक्षे तु नवम्यां चैव नारद
Blessed is the life of those who have heard the vow of Tulasi, O Narada, especially on the ninth day of the bright fortnight in Kartika.
नियमस्थो व्रती तिष्ठेद्भूमिशायी जितेंद्रियः । व्रतं त्रिरात्रमुद्दिश्य शुचिः संयतमानसः
Firm in discipline, the votary remains, sleeping on the ground, with senses controlled; for three nights, pure and with a restrained mind, he observes the vow.
स्वपेन्नियमपूर्वं तु तुलसीवनसंनिधौ । ततो मध्याह्नसमये नद्यादौ विमले जले
He sleeps, having first observed the prescribed discipline, in the presence of the Tulasi grove; then, at midday, in pure water at the river or lake,
स्नानं कृत्वा पितॄन्देवांस्तर्पयेद्विधिपूर्वकम् । सुवर्णं कारयेद्देवं लक्ष्म्या सह जनार्दनम्
Having bathed, he offers oblations to ancestors and gods according to the prescribed method; he should fashion an image of Janardana with Lakshmi in gold.
