देवतायतनं प्राज्ञा देवानां चैव सत्रिणाम् । नाक्रामेत्कामतश्छायां ब्राह्मणानां च गोरपि
A wise person should not step on the shadow of a temple, of the gods or sacrificial priests, nor on the shadow of Brahmins or cows, out of desire.
स्वां तु नाक्रामयेच्छायां पतिताद्यैर्न रोगिभिः । नांगारभस्मकेशादिष्वधितिष्ठेत्कदाचन
He should not step on his own shadow, nor on that of the fallen or the sick; nor should he ever stand on ashes, burning coals, or hair and the like.
वर्जयेन्मार्जनी रेणुं स्नानवस्त्र घटोदकम् । न भक्षयेदभक्ष्याणि नापेयं च पिबेद्द्विजः
He should avoid dust from a broom, water from bathing clothes or a pot; a twice-born should not eat what is forbidden, nor drink what is not to be drunk.
व्यास उवाच- नाद्याच्छूद्रस्य विप्रोन्नं मोहाद्वा यदि कामतः । स शूद्रयोनिं व्रजति यस्तु भुंक्ते त्वनापदि
Vyasa said: A Brahmin should not eat food from a Shudra, whether out of delusion or desire; whoever eats it without necessity is born in the Shudra womb.
षण्मासान्यो द्विजो भुंक्ते शूद्रस्यान्नं विगर्हितम् । जीवन्नेव भवेच्छूद्रो मृतः श्वा चाभिजायते
If a twice-born eats the condemned food of a Śūdra for six months, he becomes a Śūdra while still alive, and upon death, he is born as a dog.
ब्राह्मणक्षत्रियविशां शूद्रस्य च मुनीश्वराः । यस्यान्नेनोदरस्थेन मृतस्तद्योनिमाप्नुयात्
O best of sages, among Brāhmaṇas, Kṣatriyas, Vaiśyas, and Śūdras, whoever dies with the food of another in his belly is born in the womb of that very class.
राजान्नं वर्तकान्नं च षंढान्नं चर्म्मकारिणाम् । गणान्नं गणिकान्नं च षडन्नं च विवर्जयेत्
One should avoid the food of a king, a fowler, a eunuch, a leather-worker, a guild, a courtesan, and six kinds of food.
चक्रोपजीवि रजक तस्करध्वजिनां तथा । गांधर्वलोहकारान्नं मृतकान्नं विवर्जयेत्
One should avoid the food of those who live by the wheel (potters), washermen, thieves, banner-bearers, musicians, blacksmiths, and the dead.
कुलाल चित्रकारान्नं वार्धुषेः पतितस्य च । पौनर्भवच्छत्रिकयोरभिशप्तस्य चैव हि
The food of potters, painters, barbers, the fallen, remarried women, umbrella-makers, and the cursed must also be avoided.
सुवर्णकार शैलूष व्याध वंध्यातुरस्य च । चिकित्सकस्य चैवान्नं पुंश्चल्या दंडकस्य च
The food of goldsmiths, actors, hunters, barren or sick persons, physicians, prostitutes, and executioners should also be avoided.
स्तेन नास्तिकयोरन्नं देवतानिंदकस्य च । सोमविक्रयिणश्चान्नं श्वपाकस्य विशेषतः
The food of thieves, atheists, blasphemers of the gods, sellers of Soma, and especially of those who cook for outcastes should be avoided.
भार्य्याजितस्य चैवान्नं यस्य चोपपतिर्गृहे । उत्सृष्टस्य कदर्यस्य तथैवोच्छिष्टभोजिनः
The food of one defeated by his wife, one whose wife has a paramour in the house, the abandoned, the miser, and one who eats leftovers should also be avoided.
पापीयोन्नं च संघान्नं शस्त्राजीवस्य चैव हि । भीतस्य रुदितस्यान्नमवक्रुष्टं परिक्षतम्
The food of sinners, food eaten in a group, of one who lives by the sword, of one who is frightened or weeping, food that is despised or damaged should also be avoided.
ब्रह्मद्विषः पापरुचेः श्राद्धान्नं मृतकस्य च । वृथापाकस्य चैवान्नं शावान्नं चातुरस्य च
The food of a hater of Brahman, one of evil taste, funeral offerings, food of the dead, food cooked in vain, food from a corpse, and of a four-eyed person should be avoided.
अप्रजानां तु नारीणां कृतघ्नस्य तथैव च । कारुकान्नं विशेषेण शस्त्रविक्रयिणस्तथा
The food of women without children, of the ungrateful, of artisans especially, and of sellers of weapons should also be avoided.
शौंडान्नं घांटिकान्नं च भिषजामन्नमेव च । विद्वत्प्रजननस्यान्नं परिवेत्रन्नमेव च
The food of drunkards, of those who sell bells, of physicians, of those who beget children for others, and of servants should also be avoided.
पुनर्भुवो विशेषेण तथैव दिधिषूपतेः । अवज्ञातं चावधूतं सरोषं विस्मयान्वितम्
Especially the food of remarried women, of those who desire another's wife, food that is disdained, rejected, given in anger, or with astonishment should be avoided.
गुरोरपि न भोक्तव्यमन्नं संस्कारवर्जितम् । दुष्कृतं हि मनुष्यस्य सर्वमन्ने व्यवस्थितम्
Even the food of a teacher should not be eaten if it lacks proper purification, for all the evil deeds of a person are established in food.
यो यस्यान्नं समश्नाति स तस्याश्नाति किल्बिषम् । अर्द्धका कुलं मित्रं च गोपालो वाहनापि तौ
Whoever eats another's food truly partakes of that person's sin; half of it goes to the family, friends, the cowherd, and even the vehicle.
एते शूद्रेषु भोज्यान्ना यश्चात्मानं निवेदयेत् । कुशीलवः कुंभकश्च क्षेत्रकर्मक एव च
These are the foods to be eaten among Śūdras: one who offers himself, an actor, a potter, and a field laborer.
एते शूद्रेषु भोज्यान्ना दृष्ट्वा स्वल्पगुणं बुधैः । पायसं स्नेहपक्वं च गोरसश्चैव सक्तवः
These foods among Śūdras, when seen to have little fault by the wise, are: milk pudding, food cooked in ghee, cow's milk, and cakes.
पिण्याकं चैव तैलं च शूद्राद्ग्राह्यं द्विजातिभिः । वृंताकं नालिकाशाकं कुसुंभं भस्मकं तथा
Oil-cake and oil may be accepted by twice-born from a Śūdra, as well as eggplant, leafy greens, safflower, and bhasmaka grain.
पलांडुं लशुनं शुक्तं निर्य्यासं चैव वर्जयेत् । छत्राकं विड्वराहं च स्विन्नं पीयूषमेव च
One should avoid onions, garlic, fermented foods, exudates, mushrooms, wild boar, food that has been boiled, and also nectar.
विलयं विमुखं चैव कोरकाणि विवर्जयेत् । गृंजनं किंशुकं चैव कूष्मांडं च तथैव च
One should also avoid withered and unripe buds, the flower of the tamarisk, the Butea monosperma, and likewise the gourd.
उदुंबरमलाबुं च जग्ध्वा पतति वै द्विजः । तथा कृसरसंयावौ पायसापूपमेव च
A twice-born who eats the fruits of the udumbara and bottle gourd falls from his status; likewise, so do those who eat krisara, rice-cakes, milk-rice, and sweet cakes.
अनुपाकृत मांसं च देवान्नानि हवींषि च । यवागूं मातुलिगं च मत्स्यानप्यनुपाकृतान्
One should avoid uncooked meat, food offered to the gods, oblations, barley gruel, citron, and also uncooked fish.
नीपं कपित्थं प्लक्षं च प्रयत्नेन विवर्जयेत् । पिण्याकं चोद्धृतस्नेहं देवधान्यं तथैव च
With great care, one should avoid the nipa, wood-apple, and fig trees, as well as oilcake, clarified butter that has been extracted, and wild grains.
रात्रौ च तिलसंबंधं प्रयत्नेन दधि त्यजेत् । नाश्नीयात्पयसा तक्रं नाभक्ष्यानुपयोजयेत्
At night, one should diligently avoid curd mixed with sesame; one should not drink buttermilk with milk, nor consume what is forbidden.
कृमिदुष्टं भावदुष्टं मृत्संसर्गं च वर्जयेत् । कृमिकीटावपन्नं च सुहृत्क्लेदं च नित्यशः
One should avoid food spoiled by worms, food that is impure in nature, or that has come into contact with clay, as well as food infested with insects or moistened by a friend.
श्वाघ्रातं च पुनः सिद्धं चंडालावेक्षितं तथा । उदक्यया च पतितैर्गवा संघ्रातमेव च
Food that has been smelled by a dog, cooked again, seen by an outcaste, smelled by a woman in her menses, or by fallen cows, should also be avoided.
