प्रचरंश्चान्नपानेषु द्रव्यहस्तो भवेन्नरः । भूमौ निक्षिप्य तद्द्रव्यमाचम्याभ्युक्षयेत्तु तत्
When eating or drinking, a person should hold the substance in his hand; placing it on the ground, he should purify himself and sprinkle water on it.
तैजसं वै समादाय यद्युच्छिष्टो भवेद्द्विजः । भूमौ निक्षिप्य तद्द्रव्यमाचम्याभ्युक्षयेत्तु तत्
If a twice-born is defiled while holding a metallic object, he should set it down on the ground, purify himself, and sprinkle water on it.
यद्यद्द्रव्यं समादाय भवेदुच्छेषणान्वितः । अनिधायैव तद्द्रव्यं भूमौ त्वशुचितामियात्
If, after taking any substance, one becomes defiled by remnants, and does not set it down on the ground, that substance becomes impure.
वस्त्रादिषु विकल्पः स्यात्तत्संस्पृश्याचमेदिह । अरण्ये निर्जने रात्रौ चौरव्याघ्राकुले पथि
There may be exceptions regarding cloth and such; touching them, one should purify oneself, especially in the forest, in solitude at night, or on a path frequented by thieves or tigers.
कृत्वा मूत्रं पुरीषं वा द्रव्यहस्तो न दुष्यति । निधाय दक्षिणे कर्णे ब्रह्मसूत्रमुदङ्मुखः
After passing urine or feces, the hand holding a substance is not defiled; having placed the sacred thread on the right ear, one should face north.
अह्नि कुर्याच्छकृन्मूत्रं रात्रौ चेद्दक्षिणामुखः । अंतर्धाय महीं काष्टैः पत्रैर्लोष्टतृणेन वा
During the day, one should pass stool or urine facing south; at night, facing the right; and cover the ground with wood, leaves, clods, or grass.
प्रावृत्य च शिरः कुर्याद्विण्मूत्रस्य विसर्जनम् । छायाकूपनदीगोष्ठचैत्यांभः पथि भस्मसु
One should cover the head while passing stool or urine, avoiding shadows, wells, rivers, cow-pens, shrines, water, roads, or ashes.
अग्नौ चैव श्मशाने च विण्मूत्रं न समाचरेत् । न गोमयेन काष्ठे वा महावृक्षेऽथ शाद्वले
One should not pass stool or urine into fire or in a cremation ground, nor on cow dung, wood, a great tree, or on grass.
न तिष्ठन्न च निर्वासा न च पर्वतमंडले । न जीर्णदेवायतने वल्मीके न कदाचन
One should not do so while standing, unclothed, on a mountain, in a ruined temple, or in an anthill at any time.
न ससत्वेषु गर्तेषु न गच्छन्न समाचरेत् । तुषांगारकपालेषु राजमार्गे तथैव च
One should not do so in pits inhabited by living beings, nor while walking; nor in husk, charcoal, potsherds, or on a royal road.
न क्षेत्रे न बिले वापि न तीर्थे न चतुष्पथे । नोद्यानेऽपासमीपे वा नोषरे नगराशये
Not in a field, nor in a pit, nor at a sacred ford, nor at a crossroads; not in a garden, near a cremation ground, on barren land, or in a city dwelling—
न सोपानत्पादुको वा छत्री वा नांतरिक्षके । न चैवाभिमुखः स्त्रीणां गुरुब्राह्मणयोर्गवाम्
Not on a step, nor wearing shoes, nor under an umbrella, nor in the open air; nor facing women, teachers, Brahmins, or cows—
न देवदेवालययोरपामपि कदाचन । न ज्योतींषि निरीक्षन्वानवाप्रतिमुखोथ वा
Never in temples of gods or shrines, nor near water; nor while gazing at lights, images, or facing statues—
प्रत्यादित्यं प्रत्यनलं प्रतिसोमं तथैव च । आहृत्य मृत्तिकां कूलाल्लेपगंधापकर्षणीम्
Not facing the sun, fire, or the moon; having gathered clean earth from the riverbank, suitable for cleansing and fragrant—
कुर्यादतंद्रितः शौचं विशुद्धैरुद्धृतोदकैः । नाहरेन्मृतिकां विप्रः पांशुलां न सकर्दमाम्
One should perform purification attentively, using pure water drawn for the purpose; a Brahmin should not take earth that is dusty or muddy—
न मार्गान्नोषराद्देशाच्छौचशिष्टां परस्य च । न देवायतनात्कूपाद्धाम्नो न च जलात्तथा
Not from roads, barren places, or what remains after another's purification; not from a temple, well, home, or from water—
उपस्पृशेत्ततो नित्यं पूर्वोक्तेन विधानतः
Afterwards, one should always perform ablution according to the method previously described.
इति श्रीपाद्मे महापुराणे स्वर्गखंडे कर्मयोगकथने। द्विपंचाशत्तमोऽध्यायः
Thus ends the fifty-second chapter in the section on Karma Yoga, in the Svarga Khanda of the glorious Padma Purana.
व्यास उवाच- एवं दंडादिभिर्युक्तः शौचाचारसमन्वितः । आहूतोध्यापनं कुर्याद्वीक्ष्यमाणो गुरोर्मुखम्
Vyasa said: Thus equipped with staff and other requisites, established in the conduct of purity, one should recite when summoned, looking toward the teacher’s face.
नित्यमुद्यतपाणिः स्यात्साध्वाचारः सुसंयतः । आस्यतामिति चोक्तः सन्नासीताभिमुखं गुरोः
He should always be attentive, of good conduct, and self-controlled; when told, 'Sit,' he should sit facing the teacher.
प्रतिश्रवणसंभाषे शयानो न समाचरेत् । आसीनो न च भुंजानो न तिष्ठेन्न पराङ्मुखः
He should not respond while lying down, nor while eating, nor should he stand or turn his back when addressed by the teacher.
नीचैः शय्यासनं चास्य सर्वदा गुरुसन्निधौ । गुरोस्तु चक्षुर्विषयेन यथेष्टासनो भवेत्
In the teacher’s presence, his bed and seat should always be lower; but within the teacher’s sight, he may sit as appropriate.
नोदाहरेदस्य नाम परोक्षमपि केवलम् । न चैवास्यानुकुर्वीत गतिभाषणचेष्टितम्
He should not utter the teacher’s name, even in his absence; nor should he imitate the teacher’s walk, speech, or gestures.
गुरोर्यत्र परीवादो निंदा वापि प्रवर्तते । कर्णौ तत्र पिधातव्यौ गंतव्यं वा ततोऽन्यतः
Wherever there is slander or criticism of the teacher, he should cover his ears or leave that place.
दूरस्थो नार्चयेदेनं न क्रुद्धो नांतिके स्त्रियः । न चैवास्योत्तरं ब्रूयात्स्थितो नासीत सन्निधौ
He should not worship the teacher from afar, nor approach when angry or when women are near; nor should he reply while standing or sit in the teacher’s presence without permission.
उदकुंभं कुशान्पुष्पं समिधोऽस्याहरेत्सदा । मार्जनं लेपनं नित्यमंगानां वै समाचरेत्
He should always bring water pots, sacred grass, flowers, and firewood for the teacher; and regularly perform cleaning and anointing of the teacher’s limbs.
नास्य निर्माल्यशयनं पादुकोपानहावपि । आक्रामेदासनं चास्य च्छायादीन्वा कदाचन
He should never step on the teacher’s garland, bed, shoes, or sandals, nor ever cross over the teacher’s seat or shadow.
साधयेद्दंतकाष्ठादींल्लब्धं चास्मै निवेदयेत् । अनापृच्छ्य न गंतव्यं भवेत्प्रियहिते रतः
He should prepare tooth-sticks and the like, and offer whatever is obtained to the teacher; he should not leave without permission, and should be devoted to what pleases and benefits the teacher.
न पादौ सारयेदस्य सन्निधाने कदाचन । जृंभितं हसितं चैव कंठप्रावरणं तथा
One should never stretch out one's feet in his presence, nor yawn, laugh, or cover the throat.
वर्जयेत्सन्निधौ नित्यमंगस्फोटनमेव च । यथाकालमधीयीत यावन्न विमना गुरुः
One should always avoid cracking the limbs in his presence; study at the proper time, so long as the teacher is not displeased.
