In a beautiful family, on the auspicious bank of the Mandakini, he delights with thousands of women, together with sages, as a result of his deeds here.
He is honored in heaven by Siddhas, Caranas, Gandharvas, and the gods; then, having fallen from heaven, he becomes the lord of Jambudvipa.
Then, constantly reflecting on virtuous deeds, he becomes endowed with qualities and abundant wealth here—of this there is no doubt.
Established in truth and righteousness by deed, mind, and word, whoever gives gifts between the Ganga and Yamuna—
—whether it be gold, jewels, pearls, or grain, for his own purpose, for ancestral rites, or even in worship of the gods—
—for him, that holy place is fruitless until he attains the result; thus one should give at a sacred ford and in holy shrines.
In all such occasions, a twice-born should be ever vigilant; whoever gives a Kapila cow with reddish hue at Prayaga—
—with golden horns, silver hooves, a cloth around her neck, and yielding milk, having properly caused a learned and virtuous Brahmin at Prayaga to accept her—
—one who is calm, clad in white garments, knower of dharma, and accomplished in the Vedas—such a cow should be given to him at the confluence of the Ganga and Yamuna.
And also splendid garments and various kinds of jewels, as many as there are hairs on the body of that cow, O best of men.
For as many thousands of years in heaven is he honored as there are hairs on that cow; wherever she is born, that cow is also born there.
And by that act, he does not see terrible hell; having reached the northern Kurus, he enjoys inexhaustible time.
By giving a single milking cow, one saves sons, wives, and servants, just as by giving a hundred thousand cows.
Therefore, among all gifts, the gift of a cow is supreme; in difficult, perilous, and dreadful situations, when great sins arise, the cow alone provides protection—therefore, it should be given to a twice-born.
Thus ends the forty-second chapter in the Svarga-khanda of the glorious Padma Purana.
Yudhishthira said: Just as you have described, O sage, the greatness of Prayaga, so indeed am I freed from all sins—of this there is no doubt.
O Lord, by what procedure should one go, with certainty of dharma? Tell me, O great sage, the rule prescribed for Prayaga.
Markandeya said: I shall tell you, dear one, the proper procedure for pilgrimage; whoever goes to Prayaga, accompanied by the gods, O best of the Kurus—
Hear also the result for one who rides on a bull: he dwells in a terrible hell, in the fierce wrath of the cows.
The ancestors of that person do not accept water from him; but one who bathes and gives water to his children in the proper way—
—and gives gifts to Brahmins for all, just as for himself; but if a man goes by vehicle out of greed for wealth or out of delusion—
—for him, that pilgrimage is fruitless; therefore, one should give up traveling by vehicle. But one who gives a maiden in marriage between the Ganga and Yamuna—
—according to the proper rishi tradition, as much as his means allow, does not see the dreadful Yama or hell by that act.
He goes to the northern Kurus and enjoys endless happiness; he obtains sons and wives endowed with righteousness and good conduct.
There, one should give gifts according to one's means; by that, the fruit of pilgrimage increases—of this, there is no doubt.
O king, he remains in heaven until the end of the world; and one who gives up his life at the root of a banyan tree—
—surpasses all worlds and goes to the world of Rudra; there, the twelve Adityas perform austerities, taking refuge in Rudra.
They burn up the entire world, but the root of the banyan is not burned; when the moon, sun, and wind are destroyed and the world becomes a single ocean—
—it is there that Vishnu sleeps, being born again and again; the gods, demons, Gandharvas, sages, Siddhas, and Charanas—
—always serve that sacred place at the confluence of the Ganga and Yamuna; there, O king, they go to Prayaga, which is united with it.
