Even if I am to be slain by you, let not my liṅga be destroyed; let me attain, O great god, the grasping of your feet.
Birth after birth, O great god, I am ever devoted to your feet; having praised the supreme Lord in the Toṭaka meter—
Om! Salutation to Śiva, Śaṅkara, the doer of all; salutation to Bhava, Bhīma, Maheśa, Śiva; destroyer of the body of Kāmadeva, slayer of Tripura, crusher of Andhaka.
Salutations to you, beloved of women, divided in love; indeed, salutation to you, who is bowed to by hosts of gods and siddhas, by troops with faces of horses, monkeys, lions, elephants, and Indra, and by those with very short or very long faces.
Unattainable by the asuras, even with hundreds of bodies, not troubled by many bodies; I bow to you, Lord, bearer of the crescent moon, O god, salutations.
Together with sons, wives, attendants, and wealth, always grant me victory and remembrance; I am afflicted by many bodies, and today I have reached the path to great hell.
My sinful course does not turn back, even pure and virtuous deeds are abandoned; compassion wanders, the mind wanders, this delusion is restrained by bad intellect.
Whoever recites this divine Toṭaka hymn with pure mind and devotion, for him, as for Bāṇa, Rudra himself will be the bestower of boons.
Hearing this great and divine hymn, the god Maheśvara, being pleased, then himself, O Pāṇḍava, granted a boon to him.
Īśvara said: 'You need not fear, my child; remain in Sauvarṇa, O Dānava, together with your sons, grandsons, wives, and attendants.'
From this day forth, O Bāṇa, you are invulnerable even to the gods; this boon was given to him by the Lord of gods, O Pāṇḍava.
He became imperishable and undecaying in the world, and wandered about without fear; then Rudra restrained Saptashikha as well.
The third (city) was protected by the great-souled Śaṃkara; by the power of Rudra's energy, it eternally wanders in the sky.
Thus, Tripura was burned by the great-souled Śaṃkara; blazing with a garland of flames, it fell to the earth.
One (city) of his was cast down at Śrīśaila by Tripurāntaka; the second was cast down there on the mountain Amara-kaṇṭaka.
When Tripura was burned, O King, a multitude of Rudras was established; the blazing (city) was cast down there, and thus he is known as Jvāleśvara.
A divine flame from it rose upward and went to the heavens; then there arose a cry of distress among the gods, asuras, and kinnaras.
Rudra fixed that arrow in the foremost city of Maheśvara; thus, whoever goes to that mountain, Amara-kaṇṭaka—
Having enjoyed the fourteen worlds, O son of Pāṇḍu, for a thousand crore years, and then for thirty crore more—
Afterward, coming to the earth, he becomes a righteous king; he rules the earth as a sole sovereign—of this there is no doubt.
This Amara-kaṇṭaka, O great king, is holy in every way; whoever goes to Amara-kaṇṭaka during lunar or solar eclipses—
The wise declare that seeing Maheśvara there grants merit ten times greater than an Aśvamedha sacrifice; one attains the world of the gods.
When the sun is seized by Rāhu, people go there in crowds; all that merit is obtained on the mountain Amara-kaṇṭaka.
A person attains the fruit of Puṇḍarīka's sacrifice there; on the mountain Amara-kaṇṭaka is the deity called Jvāleśvara.
Those who die there after bathing ascend to heaven and are not born again; O great king, whoever gives up his life at Jvāleśvara—
Hear also the fruit, even for one who listens with devotion during a lunar or solar eclipse: the gods called Amara dwell on the mountain Amara-kaṇṭaka.
He attains Rudra's world until the dissolution of creation, at the water's edge of the mountain of the god Amareśvara.
There, countless chief sages, steadfast in vows, perform austerities; O king, the region of Amara-kaṇṭaka extends for a yojana all around.
Whether desiring or without desire, one who bathes in the auspicious waters of the Narmadā is freed from sins and goes to Rudra's world.
Nārada said: On the northern bank of the Narmadā is a sacred place, a yojana in extent, renowned as Patreśvara, supreme remover of all sins.
