सदावीरामधृष्यां च कुशचीरां महानदीम् । रथचित्रां ज्योतिरथां विश्वामित्रां कपिंजलाम्
Always unconquerable Vīrā, Kuśacīrā the great river, Rathacitrā, Jyotirathā, Viśvāmitrā, and Kapiṃjalā.
चंद्रावहफलद्यं चैव कुचीरामंबुवाहिनीम् । वैनदीं पिंगलां वेणां तुंगवेगां महानदीम्
Caṃdrāvaha, Phaladya, and likewise Kucīrā, the water-bearing river, Vainadī, Piṃgalā, Veṇā, Tuṃgavegā, the great river.
विदिशां कृष्णवेणां च ताम्रां च कपिलामपि । धेनुं सकामां वेदस्वां हविःस्रावां महापथाम्
Vidiśā, Kṛṣṇaveṇā, also Tāmrā and Kapilā; Dhenu, Sakāmā, Vedasvā, Haviḥsrāvā, and Mahāpathā.
शिप्रां च पिच्छलां चैव भारद्वाजीं च निम्नगाम् । कौर्णिकीं निम्नगां शोणां बाहुदामथ चंद्रमाम्
Śiprā and Picchalā, Bhāradvājī the flowing river, Kaurṇikī, the flowing Śoṇā, Bāhudā, and Caṃdramā.
दुर्गामंतः शिलां चैव ब्रह्ममेध्यां दृषद्वतीम् । परोक्षामथ रोहीं च तथा जंबूनदीमपि
Durgāmaṃtaḥśilā, Brahmamedhyā, Dṛṣadvatī, Parokṣā, Rohī, and likewise Jaṃbūnadī.
सुनासां तमसां दासीं सामान्यां वरणामसिम् । नीलां धृतिकरीं चैव पर्णाशां च महानदीम्
Sunāsā, Tamasā, Dāsī, Sāmānyā, Varaṇāmasī, Nīlā, Dhṛtikarī, and Parṇāśā, the great river.
मानवीं वृषभां भासां ब्रह्ममेध्यां दृषद्वतीम् । एताश्चान्याश्च बहुला महानद्यो द्विजर्षभाः
Mānavī, Vṛṣabhā, Bhāsā, Brahmamedhyā, Dṛṣadvatī; and these many other great rivers, O best of twice-born.
सदा निरामयां कृष्णां मंदगां मंदवाहिनीम् । ब्राह्मणीं च महागौरीं दुर्गामपि च सत्तमाः
Ever pure Kṛṣṇā, Maṃdagā, Maṃdavāhinī, Brāhmaṇī, Mahāgaurī, and Durgā, O excellent ones.
चित्रोत्पलां चित्ररथामतुलां रोहिणीं तथा । मंदाकिनीं वैतरणीं कोकां चापि महानदीम्
Citrotpalā, Citrarathā, Atulā, Rohiṇī, Maṃdākinī, Vaitaraṇī, and Kokā, the great river.
शुक्तिमतीमनंगां च तथैव वृषसाह्वयाम् । लोहित्यां करतोयां च तथैव वृषकात्वयाम्
Śuktimatī, Manaṃgā, and likewise Vṛṣasāhvayā; Lohityā, Karatoyā, and also Vṛṣakātvayā.
कुमारीमृषितुल्यां च मारिषां च सरस्वतीम् । मंदाकिनीं सुपुण्यां च सर्वां गंगां च सत्तमाः
Kumārī, equal to Ṛṣi, Māriṣā, Sarasvatī, Maṃdākinī, supremely holy, and all the Gaṅgā, O excellent ones.
विश्वस्य मातरः सर्वाः सर्वाश्चैव महाफलाः । तथा नद्यः सुप्रकाशाः शतशोथ सहस्रशः
All these are mothers of the universe, all are of great fruit; likewise, the rivers are resplendent, by the hundreds and thousands.
इत्येता सरितो विप्राः समाख्याता यथास्मृति । अतऊर्द्ध्वं जनपदान्निबोध गदतो मम
Thus, O Brāhmaṇas, these rivers have been named as remembered; now hear from me about the peoples.
तत्रेमे कुरुपांचालाः शाल्वमात्रेय जांगलाः । शूरसेनाः पुलिंदाश्च बौधामालास्तथैव च
Here are the Kurus, Pāñcālas, Śālvas, Mātreyas, Jāṃgalas, Śūrasenas, Puliṃdas, and Baudhāmālas as well.
मत्स्याः कुशट्टाः सौगंध्याः कुत्सपाः काशिकोशलाः । चेदिमत्स्यकरूषाश्च भोजाः सिंधुपुलिंदकाः
Matsyas, Kuśaṭṭas, Saugandhyas, Kutsapas, Kāśis, Kośalas, Cedis, Matsyas, Karūṣas, Bhojas, Sindhus, and Puliṃdakas.
उत्तमाश्च दशार्णाश्च मेकलाश्चोत्कलैः सह । पंचालाः कोशलाश्चैव नैकपृष्ठयुगंधराः
The Uttamas, Daśārṇas, Mekalas together with Utkalas, Pāñcālas, Kośalas, and the many-backed Yugaṃdharas.
बोधा मद्राः कलिंगाश्च काशयो परकाशयः । जठराः कुकुराश्चैव सुदशार्णाः सुसत्तमाः
Bodhas, Madras, Kaliṅgas, Kāśayas, Parakāśayas, Jaṭharas, Kukuras, and the most excellent Sudaśārṇas.
कुंतयोऽवंतयश्चैव तथैवापरकुंतयः । गोमंता मल्लकाः पुंड्राः विदर्भा नृपवाहिकाः
Kuntis, Avantis, and likewise the Western Kuntis, Gomaṃtas, Mallakas, Puṇḍras, Vidarbhas, and Nṛpavāhikas.
अश्मकाः सोत्तराश्चैव गोपराष्ट्राः कनीयसः । अधिराज्यकुशट्टाश्च मल्लराष्ट्राश्च केरलाः
The Ashmakas, those of the northern regions, the Goparashtras who are lesser, the Kuśaṭṭas with overlordship, the Mallarashtras, and the Keralas.
मालवाश्चोपवास्याश्च चक्रावक्रालयाः शकाः । विदेहा मगधाः सद्मा मलजा विजयास्तथा
The Malavas, the Upavasyas, the Shakas of Chakravakra's abode, the Videhas, the Magadhas, the Sadmas, the Malajas, and the Vijayas.
अंगा वंगाः कलिंगाश्च यकृल्लोमान एव च । मल्लाः सुदेष्णाः प्रह्लादा महिषाः शशकास्तथा
The Angas, the Vangas, the Kalingas, those with liver hair, the Mallas, the Sudeṣṇas, the Prahladas, the Mahishas, and the Shashakas.
बाह्लिका वाटधानाश्च आभीराः कालतोयकाः । अपरांताः परांताश्च पंकलाश्चर्मचंडिकाः
The Bahlikas, the Vatadhanas, the Abhiras, the Kālatojakas, the Aparantas, the Parantas, the Pankalas, and the Carmacandikas.
अटवीशेखराश्चैव मेरुभूताश्च सत्तमाः । उपावृतानुपावृताः सुराष्ट्राः केकयास्तथा
Those crowned in the forests, the excellent ones born of Meru, the Upavṛtas and Anupavṛtas, the Suraṣṭras, and the Kekayas.
कुट्टापरांता माहेयाः कक्षाः सामुद्र निष्कुटाः । अंधाश्च बहवो विप्रा अंतर्गिर्यस्तथैव च
The Kuṭṭāparantas, the Maheyas, the Kakṣas, those dwelling by the sea, the Niṣkuṭas, the many blind ones, the Brahmins, and those within the mountains.
बहिर्गिर्य्योंगमलदा मगधा मालवार्घटाः । सत्त्वतराः प्रावृषेयाः भार्गवाश्च द्विजर्षभाः
Those outside the mountains, the Ongamaladas, the Magadhas, the Malava-Arghaṭas, those of greater virtue, the Prāvṛṣeyas, the Bhārgavas, and the foremost twice-born.
पुंड्रा भार्गाः किराताश्च सुदेष्णा भासुरास्तथा । शका निषादा निषधास्तथैवानर्त नैऋताः
The Puṇḍras, the Bhārgas, the Kirātas, the Sudeṣṇas, the radiant ones, the Shakas, the Niṣādas, the Niṣadhas, the Anartas, and the Nairitas.
पूर्णलाः पूतिमत्स्याश्च कुंतला कुशकास्तथा । तरिग्रहाश्शूरसेना ईजिकाः कल्पकारणाः
The Pūrṇalas, the Pūtimatsyas, the Kuntalas, the Kuśakas, the Tarigrahas, the Shūrasenas, the Ījikas, and the Kalpakāraṇas.
तिलभागामसाराश्च मधुमत्ताः ककुंदकाः । काश्मीराः सिंधुसौवीरा गांधारा दर्शकास्तथा
The Tilabhāgas, the Amasāras, the Madhumattas, the Kakundakas, the Kāśmīras, the Sindhusauvīras, the Gāndhāras, and the Darshakas.
अभीसाराः कुद्रुताश्च सौरिला बाह्लिकास्तथा । दर्वी च मालवा दर्वा वातजामरथोरगाः
The Abhīsāras, the Kudrutas, the Saurilas, the Bahlikas, the Darvī, the Mālavas, the Darvas, the Vātajāmaras, and the Thoragas.
बलरट्टास्तथा विप्राः सुदामानः मुमल्लिकाः । बंधाकरीकषाश्चैव कुलिंदा गंधिकास्तथा
The Balarashtras, the Brahmins, the Sudāmanas, the Mumallikas, the Bandhākarīkaṣas, the Kulindas, and the Gandhikas.
