ऋषय ऊचुः-। यदिदं भारतं वर्षं पुण्यं पुण्यविधायकम् । तत्सर्वं नः समाचक्ष्व त्वं हि नो बुद्धिमान्मतः
The sages said: This region of Bhārata is holy and brings merit; tell us all about it, for you are considered wise by us.
सूत उवाच-। अत्र ते कीर्त्तयिष्यामि वर्षं भारतमुत्तमम् । प्रिय मित्रस्य देवस्य मनोर्वैवस्वतस्य च
Sūta said: Here I shall recount to you the excellent region of Bhārata, dear to the divine friend, Manu, son of Vivasvat.
पृथोश्च प्राज्ञ वै न्यस्य तथैक्ष्वाकोर्महात्मनः । ययातेरंबरीषस्य मांधातुर्नहुषस्य च
And also of Prithu, the wise one, and likewise of the great-souled Ikshvaku, Yayati, Ambarisha, Mandhatri, and Nahusha.
तथैव मुचुकुंदस्य कुबेरोशीनरस्य च । ऋषभस्य तथैलस्य नृगस्य नृपतेस्तथा
In the same way, of Muchukunda, Kubera, Shini, Rishabha, Ila, and likewise of King Nriga.
कुशिकस्यैव राजर्षेर्गाधेश्चैव महात्मनः । सोमस्य चैव राजर्षेर्दिलीपस्य तथैव च
Of the royal sage Kushika, and also of the great-souled Gadhi, of the royal sage Soma, and likewise of Dilipa.
अन्येषां च महाभागाः क्षत्रियाणां बलीयसाम् । सर्वेषामेव भूतानां प्रियं भारतमुत्तमम्
And of other greatly fortunate and powerful Kshatriyas; for all beings, the excellent Bharata is dear.
ततो वर्षं प्रवक्ष्यामि यथाश्रुतमहो द्विजाः । महेंद्रो मलयःसह्यः शुक्तिमानृक्षवानपि
Then I will describe the region, as it has been heard, O excellent twice-born; Mahendra, Malaya, Sahya, Shuktimat, Riksha also—
विंध्यश्च पारियात्रश्च सप्तैते कुलपर्वताः । तेषां सहस्रशो विप्रा पर्वतास्ते समीपतः
Vindhya and Pariyatra—these seven are the chief mountains; near them, O Brahmins, are thousands of other mountains.
अविज्ञाताः सारवंतो विपुलाश्चित्रसानवः । अन्ये तु ये परिज्ञाता ह्रस्वा ह्रस्वोपजीविनः
Some are unknown, rich in essence, vast, with varied peaks; others, which are known, are small and sustain the small.
आर्यम्लेच्छसधर्माणस्ते मिश्राः पुरुषा द्विजाः । नदीं पिबंति विमलां गंगां सिंधुंसरस्वतीम्
There, O twice-born, are people of Aryan and Mleccha ways, mixed together; they drink the pure waters of the Ganga, Sindhu, and Sarasvati.
गोदावरीं नर्मदां च बहूदां च महानदीम् । शतद्रुं चंद्रभागां च यमुनां च महानदीम्
Godavari, Narmada, Bahuda the great river, Shatadru, Chandrabhaga, and Yamuna the great river.
दृषद्वतीं वितस्तां च विपापां स्वच्छवालुकाम् । नदीं वेत्रवतीं चैव कृष्णां वेणीं च निम्नगाम्
Drishadvati, Vitasta, the sinless river with clear sands, the river Vetravati, Krishna, and Veni, the flowing stream.
इरावतीं वितस्तां च पयोष्णीं देविकामपि । वेदस्मृतिं वेदशिरां त्रिदिवां सिंधुला कृमिम्
Iravati, Vitasta, Payoshni, and also Devika; Veda-smriti, Vedashira, Tridiva, Sindhula, and Krimi.
करीषिणीं चित्रवहां त्रिसेनां चैव निम्नगाम् । गोमतीं धूतपापां च चंदनां च महानदीम्
Karishini, Citravaha, Trisena the flowing river, Gomati, Dhootapapa, and Chandana the great river.
कौशिकीं त्रिदिवां हृद्यां नाचितां रोहितारणीम् । रहस्यां शतकुंभां च सरयूं च द्विजोत्तमाः
Kaushiki, Tridiva the delightful, Nachita, Rohitarani, Rahasya, Shatakumbha, and Sarayu, O best of Brahmins.
चर्मण्वतीं वेत्रवतीं हस्तिसोमां दिशं तथा । शरावतीं पयोष्णीं च भीमां भीमरथीमपि
Charmavati, Vetravati, Hastisoma, Disha, Sharavati, Payoshni, Bhima, and Bhimarathi as well.
कावेरीं चुलुकां चापि तापीं शतमलामपि । नीवारां महितां चापि सुप्रयोगां तथा नदीम्
Kaveri, Chuluka, Tapi, Shatamala, Nivara the great, and also Suprayoga, the river.
पवित्रां कृष्णलां सिंधुं वाजिनीं पुरमालिनीम् । पूर्वाभिरामां वीरां च भीमां मालावतीं तथा
Pavitra, Krishnala, Sindhu, Vajini, Puramalini, Purvabhirama, Vira, Bhima, and Malavati as well.
पलाशिनीं पापहरां महेंद्रां पटलावतीम् । करीषिणीमसिक्नीं च कुशचीरीं महानदीम्
Palashini, remover of sins, Mahendra, Patalavati, Karishini, Asikni, Kushachiri, the great river.
मरुतां प्रवरां मेनां हेमां घृतवतीं तथा । अनावतीमनुष्णां च सेव्यां कापीं च सत्तमाः
Mena, foremost of the Maruts, Hema, Ghritavati, Anavati, Anushna, the serviceable Kapi, O excellent ones.
सदावीरामधृष्यां च कुशचीरां महानदीम् । रथचित्रां ज्योतिरथां विश्वामित्रां कपिंजलाम्
Always unconquerable Vīrā, Kuśacīrā the great river, Rathacitrā, Jyotirathā, Viśvāmitrā, and Kapiṃjalā.
चंद्रावहफलद्यं चैव कुचीरामंबुवाहिनीम् । वैनदीं पिंगलां वेणां तुंगवेगां महानदीम्
Caṃdrāvaha, Phaladya, and likewise Kucīrā, the water-bearing river, Vainadī, Piṃgalā, Veṇā, Tuṃgavegā, the great river.
विदिशां कृष्णवेणां च ताम्रां च कपिलामपि । धेनुं सकामां वेदस्वां हविःस्रावां महापथाम्
Vidiśā, Kṛṣṇaveṇā, also Tāmrā and Kapilā; Dhenu, Sakāmā, Vedasvā, Haviḥsrāvā, and Mahāpathā.
शिप्रां च पिच्छलां चैव भारद्वाजीं च निम्नगाम् । कौर्णिकीं निम्नगां शोणां बाहुदामथ चंद्रमाम्
Śiprā and Picchalā, Bhāradvājī the flowing river, Kaurṇikī, the flowing Śoṇā, Bāhudā, and Caṃdramā.
दुर्गामंतः शिलां चैव ब्रह्ममेध्यां दृषद्वतीम् । परोक्षामथ रोहीं च तथा जंबूनदीमपि
Durgāmaṃtaḥśilā, Brahmamedhyā, Dṛṣadvatī, Parokṣā, Rohī, and likewise Jaṃbūnadī.
सुनासां तमसां दासीं सामान्यां वरणामसिम् । नीलां धृतिकरीं चैव पर्णाशां च महानदीम्
Sunāsā, Tamasā, Dāsī, Sāmānyā, Varaṇāmasī, Nīlā, Dhṛtikarī, and Parṇāśā, the great river.
मानवीं वृषभां भासां ब्रह्ममेध्यां दृषद्वतीम् । एताश्चान्याश्च बहुला महानद्यो द्विजर्षभाः
Mānavī, Vṛṣabhā, Bhāsā, Brahmamedhyā, Dṛṣadvatī; and these many other great rivers, O best of twice-born.
सदा निरामयां कृष्णां मंदगां मंदवाहिनीम् । ब्राह्मणीं च महागौरीं दुर्गामपि च सत्तमाः
Ever pure Kṛṣṇā, Maṃdagā, Maṃdavāhinī, Brāhmaṇī, Mahāgaurī, and Durgā, O excellent ones.
चित्रोत्पलां चित्ररथामतुलां रोहिणीं तथा । मंदाकिनीं वैतरणीं कोकां चापि महानदीम्
Citrotpalā, Citrarathā, Atulā, Rohiṇī, Maṃdākinī, Vaitaraṇī, and Kokā, the great river.
शुक्तिमतीमनंगां च तथैव वृषसाह्वयाम् । लोहित्यां करतोयां च तथैव वृषकात्वयाम्
Śuktimatī, Manaṃgā, and likewise Vṛṣasāhvayā; Lohityā, Karatoyā, and also Vṛṣakātvayā.
