एतद्विचार्य मतिमानाश्रयेद्धर्मसंग्रहम् । नानानरकसंपातादुत्थितो यदि पूरुषः
Considering this, a wise person should resort to the collection of dharma, if he has arisen from the fall into various hells.
स्थावरादि तनुं लब्ध्वा यदि भाग्यवशात्पुनः । मानुष्यं लभते तत्र गर्भवासोतिदुःखदः
Having obtained a body such as a plant or similar, if by fortune he again attains human birth, there, the suffering of dwelling in the womb is exceedingly great.
ततः कर्मवशाज्जंतुर्यदि वा जायते भुवि । बाल्यादिबहुदोषेण पीडितो भवति द्विजाः
Then, by the force of karma, if a being is born on earth, he is afflicted, O twice-born, by the many faults of childhood and so on.
पुनर्यौवनमासाद्य दारिद्र्येण प्रपीड्यते । रोगेण गुरुणा वापि अनावृष्ट्यादिना तथा
Again, upon reaching youth, he is greatly afflicted by poverty, or by severe disease, or by drought and the like.
वार्द्धकेन लभेत्पीडामनिर्वाच्यामितस्ततः । मनसश्चलनाद्व्याधेस्ततो मरणमाप्नुयात्
In old age, he experiences unspeakable suffering, and due to the instability of the mind and disease, he then meets with death.
न तस्मादधिकं दुःखं संसारेप्यनुभूयते । ततः कर्म्मवशाज्जंतुर्यमलोके प्रपीड्यते
No greater suffering is experienced in saṃsāra than this; then, by the force of karma, the being is tormented in Yama's realm.
तत्रातियातनां भुक्त्वा पुनरेव प्रजायते । जायते म्रियते जंतु म्रियते जायते पुनः
There, having endured intense torment, he is born again; a being is born and dies, dies and is born again.
अनाराधित गोविंदचरणे त्वीदृशी दशा । अनायासेन मरणं विनायासेन जीवनम्
For one who has not worshipped Govinda's feet, such is the condition: death comes with effort, and life comes without ease.
अनाराधितगोविंदचरणस्य न जायते । धनं यदि भवेद्गेहे रक्षणात्तस्य किं फलम्
For one who has not worshipped Govinda's feet, wealth does not arise; and even if it is present in the house, what is the use of its protection?
यदासौ कृष्यते याम्यैर्दूतैः किं धनमन्वियात् । तस्माद्द्विजातिसत्कार्यं द्रविणं सर्वसौख्यदम्
When he is dragged away by Yama's messengers, what wealth will accompany him? Therefore, O twice-born, meritorious acts and wealth bring all happiness.
दानं स्वर्गस्य सोपानं दानं किल्बिषनाशनम् । गोविंदभक्तिभजनं महापुण्यविवर्द्धनम्
Charity is the staircase to heaven; charity destroys sin; devotion and worship of Govinda greatly increase merit.
बलं यदि भवेन्मर्त्ये न वृथा तद्व्ययं चरेत् । हरेरग्रे नृत्यगीतं कुर्यादेवमतंद्रितः
If there is strength in a mortal, he should not waste it in vain; he should, without laziness, dance and sing before Hari.
यत्किंचिद्विद्यते पुंसां तच्च कृष्णे समर्पयेत् । कृष्णार्पितं कुशलदमन्यार्पितमसौख्यदम्
Whatever exists for a person, let him offer it to Krishna; what is offered to Krishna brings well-being, what is offered elsewhere brings no happiness.
चक्षुर्भ्यां श्रीहरेरेव प्रतिमादिनिरूपणम् । श्रोत्राभ्यां कलयेत्कृष्ण गुणनामान्यहर्निशम्
With the eyes, one should behold the form of Śrī Hari and the like; with the ears, one should always hear Krishna's qualities and names, day and night.
जिह्वया हरिपादांबु स्वादितव्यं विचक्षणैः । घ्राणेनाघ्राय गोविंदपादाब्जतुलसीदलम्
With the tongue, the wise should taste the water that has washed Hari's feet; with the nose, smell the tulasi leaf from Govinda's lotus feet.
त्वचा स्पृष्ट्वा हरेर्भक्तं मनसाध्याय तत्पदम् । कृतार्थो जायते जंतुर्नात्र कार्या विचारणा
With the skin, touch Hari's devotee; with the mind, meditate on his feet; the being thus becomes fulfilled—there is no need for further deliberation.
तन्मना हि भवेत्प्राज्ञस्तथा स्यात्तद्गताशयः । तमेवांतेभ्येति लोको नात्र कार्या विचारणा
Indeed, the wise person should set his mind and intention upon that; with his thoughts fixed there, at the end, he attains that state—there is no need for further deliberation.
चेतसा चाप्यनुध्यातः स्वपदं यः प्रयच्छति । नारायणमनाद्यंतं न तं सेवेत को जनः
Who, meditating with his mind, grants his own abode—Nārāyaṇa, without beginning or end—who indeed would not serve Him?
सतत नियतचित्तो विष्णुपादारविंदे वितरणमनुशक्ति प्रीतये तस्य कुर्यात् । नतिमतिरतिमस्यांघ्रिद्वये संविदध्यात्स हि खलु नरलोके पूज्यतामाप्नुयाच्च
With mind always disciplined, one should offer service at Viṣṇu’s lotus feet, with devotion and steadfastness for His pleasure; one should place his reverence and highest regard at those two feet, for he indeed attains honor among men.
सूत उवाच- एवं यन्महिमा लोके लोकनिस्तारकारणम् । तस्य विष्णोः परेशस्य नानाविग्रहधारिणः
Sūta said: Thus is the greatness in the world, the cause of liberation for beings, of Viṣṇu, the supreme Lord, who assumes many forms.
एकं पुराणं रूपं वै तत्र पाद्मं परं महत् । ब्राह्मं मूर्धा हरेरेव हृदयं पद्मसंज्ञितम्
There is one ancient form, the supreme and great Pādma; the head is called Brāhma, and the heart is known as Padma, belonging to Hari Himself.
वैष्णवं दक्षिणो बाहुः शैवं वामो महेशितुः । ऊरू भागवतं प्रोक्तं नाभिः स्यान्नारदीयकम्
The right arm is Vaiṣṇava, the left is Śaiva, belonging to the great Lord; the thighs are said to be Bhāgavata, and the navel is Nārada’s.
मार्कंडेयं च दक्षांघ्रिर्वामो ह्याग्नेयमुच्यते । भविष्यं दक्षिणो जानुर्विष्णोरेव महात्मनः
Markandeya is the right foot, and the left is called Āgneya; the right knee is Bhaviṣya, of the great-souled Viṣṇu.
ब्रह्मवैवर्तसंज्ञं तु वामजानुरुदाहृतः । लैंगं ह गुल्फकं दक्षं वाराहं वामगुल्फकम्
The left knee is known as Brahmavaivarta; the right ankle is Linga, and the left ankle is Vārāha.
स्कांदं पुराणं लोमानि त्वगस्य वामनं स्मृतम् । कौर्मं पृष्ठं समाख्यातं मात्स्यं मेदः प्रकीर्तितम्
The hair is called Skanda Purāṇa, the skin is remembered as Vāmana; the back is named Kūrma, and the fat is said to be Matsya.
मज्जा तु गारुडं प्रोक्तं ब्रह्मांडमस्थि गीयते । एवमेवाभवद्विष्णुः पुराणावयवो हरिः
The marrow is said to be Gāruḍa, and the bones are called Brahmāṇḍa; thus, Viṣṇu, Hari, became the embodiment of the Purāṇas.
हृदयं तत्र वै पाद्मं यच्छ्रुत्वामृतमश्नुते । पाद्ममेतत्पुराणं तु स्वयं देवोभवद्धरिः
There, the heart is indeed the Pādma; hearing it, one attains immortality. This Pādma Purāṇa is Hari Himself, the god.
यस्यैकाध्यायमध्याप्य सर्वैः पापैः प्रमुच्यते । तत्रादिमं स्वर्गमिदं सर्वपाद्मफलप्रदम्
Whoever studies even one chapter of it is freed from all sins; here is the original heaven, and this grants all the fruits of the Pādma.
स्वर्गखंडं समाकर्ण्य महापातकिनोपि ये । मुच्यंते तेपि पापेभ्यस्त्वचो जीर्णाद्यथोरगाः
Even those who are great sinners, upon hearing the Svarga-khaṇḍa, are freed from their sins, just as a snake sheds its old skin.
अपि चेत्सुदुराचारः सर्वधर्म्मबहिष्कृतः । आदिस्वर्गं समाकर्ण्य यत्फलं समवाप्नुयात्
Even if one is of very bad conduct, excluded from all dharmas, by hearing the Ādi-Svarga, he attains the fruit thereof.
