अप्रजानां तु नारीणां कृतघ्नस्य तथैव च । कारुकान्नं विशेषेण शस्त्रविक्रयिणस्तथा
Food from women without children, from the ungrateful, from artisans especially, and from sellers of weapons should be avoided.
शौंडान्नं घांटिकान्नं च भिषजामन्नमेव च । विद्वत्प्रजननस्यान्नं परिवेत्रन्नमेव च
Food from drunkards, ballad singers, physicians, those who produce learned offspring, and from attendants should be avoided.
पुनर्भुवो विशेषेण तथैव दिधिषूपतेः । अवज्ञातं चावधूतं सरोषं विस्मयान्वितम्
Again, especially for one who desires to rule, food that is disrespected, rejected, given with anger, or with astonishment should not be accepted.
गुरोरपि न भोक्तव्यमन्नं संस्कारवर्जितम् । दुष्कृतं हि मनुष्यस्य सर्वमन्ने व्यवस्थितम्
One must not eat food from a teacher that has not been properly purified; for all the misdeeds of a person are indeed present in food.
यो यस्यान्नं समश्नाति स तस्याश्नाति किल्बिषम् । अर्द्धका कुलं मित्रं च गोपालो वाहनापि तौ
Whoever eats another's food, indeed partakes of that person's sin; half falls upon the family, friends, the cowherd, and even the animals used for transport.
एते शूद्रेषु भोज्यान्ना यश्चात्मानं निवेदयेत् । कुशीलवः कुंभकश्च क्षेत्रकर्मक एव च
Among Shudras, food may be accepted only from one who offers himself; such as an actor, a potter, or a field laborer.
एते शूद्रेषु भोज्यान्ना दृष्ट्वा स्वल्पगुणं बुधैः । पायसं स्नेहपक्वं च गोरसश्चैव सक्तवः
Among Shudras, food may be accepted if, upon examination, it is found by the wise to have few faults: such as milk-rice, food cooked with ghee, products of cow's milk, and cakes.
पिण्याकं चैव तैलं च शूद्राद्ग्राह्यं द्विजातिभिः । वृंताकं नालिकाशाकं कुसुंभं भस्मकं तथा
Oil-cake and oil may be accepted from a Shudra by twice-born men; as well as brinjal, lotus-stalk greens, safflower, and bhasmaka grain.
पलांडुं लशुनं शुक्तं निर्य्यासं चैव वर्जयेत् । छत्राकं विड्वराहं च स्विन्नं पीयूषमेव च
One should avoid onions, garlic, fermented foods, and exudations; also mushrooms, wild boar, boiled nectar, and the like.
विलयं विमुखं चैव कोरकाणि विवर्जयेत् । गृंजनं किंशुकं चैव कूष्मांडं च तथैव च
One should avoid decayed, insipid, and unopened buds; also black nightshade, flame-of-the-forest, and likewise pumpkin.
उदुंबरमलाबुं च जग्ध्वा पतति वै द्विजः । तथा कृसरसंयावौ पायसापूपमेव च
A twice-born who eats udumbara or bottle-gourd falls from his status; likewise, gruel, barley-cakes, milk-rice, and fried cakes.
अनुपाकृत मांसं च देवान्नानि हवींषि च । यवागूं मातुलिगं च मत्स्यानप्यनुपाकृतान्
Uncooked meat, offerings to the gods, sacrificial oblations, barley gruel, citron, and uncooked fish should not be eaten.
नीपं कपित्थं प्लक्षं च प्रयत्नेन विवर्जयेत् । पिण्याकं चोद्धृतस्नेहं देवधान्यं तथैव च
One should carefully avoid nipa, wood-apple, and fig; also oil-cake with the oil removed, and wild rice.
रात्रौ च तिलसंबंधं प्रयत्नेन दधि त्यजेत् । नाश्नीयात्पयसा तक्रं नाभक्ष्यानुपयोजयेत्
At night, one should carefully avoid curd mixed with sesame; one should not drink buttermilk with milk, nor consume what is forbidden.
कृमिदुष्टं भावदुष्टं मृत्संसर्गं च वर्जयेत् । कृमिकीटावपन्नं च सुहृत्क्लेदं च नित्यशः
One should avoid food spoiled by worms, food with a bad nature, or contaminated with earth; also that which contains insects or is moistened by a friend.
श्वाघ्रातं च पुनः सिद्धं चंडालावेक्षितं तथा । उदक्यया च पतितैर्गवा संघ्रातमेव च
Food smelled by a dog, prepared by an outcaste, or seen by a Caṇḍāla; food smelled by a woman in her menses, by the fallen, or by cows should always be avoided.
असंगतं पर्य्युषितं पर्यस्तान्नं च नित्यशः । काककुक्कुटसंस्पृष्टं कृमिभिश्चैव संगतम्
Food that is not properly mixed, that is stale, or that has been overturned should always be avoided; as well as food touched by crows, chickens, or contaminated by worms.
मनुष्यैरप्यवघ्रातं कुष्ठिना स्पृष्टमेव च । न रजस्वलया दत्तं न पुंश्चल्या सरोगया
Food smelled by humans, or touched by a leper; food given by a menstruating woman, or by a woman of ill repute or with disease, should not be accepted.
मलवद्वाससा वापि परवासोथ वर्जयेत् । विवत्सायाश्च गोक्षीरं मेषस्यानिर्दशस्य च
One should avoid food given by someone wearing dirty clothes or another's garments; also the milk of a cow whose calf is dead, and of a sheep that has not been milked.
आविकं संधिनीक्षीरमपेयं मनुरब्रवीत् । बलाकं हंसदात्यूहं कलविंकं शुकं तथा
Manu has declared that sheep's milk and milk from a newly-calved animal should not be consumed; nor the meat of the crane, goose, waterfowl, lapwing, or parrot.
कुरुरं च चकोरं च जालपादं च कोकिलम् । वायसान्खंजरीटांश्च श्येनं गृध्रं तथैव च
One should not eat the kurura bird, the chakora, the jalapada, the kokila, the crow, the khanjariṭa, the shyen (hawk), nor the vulture.
उलूकं चक्रवाकं च भासं पारावतं तथा । कपोतं टिट्टिभं चैव ग्रामकुक्कुटमेव च
Nor should one eat the owl, the chakravaka, the bhāsa, the pigeon, the dove, the titibha, nor the village rooster.
सिंहं व्याघ्रं च मार्जारं श्वानं सूकरमेव च । शृगालं मर्कटं चैव गर्द्दभं न च भक्षयेत्
One should not eat the lion, the tiger, the cat, the dog, the boar, the jackal, the monkey, nor the donkey.
न भक्षयेत्सर्पमृगाञ्छिखिनोन्यान्वनेचरान् । जलेचरान्स्थलचरान्प्राणिनश्चेति धारणा
One should not eat snakes, wild animals, peacocks, or other forest-dwelling creatures, nor aquatic or terrestrial animals—this is the rule.
गोधा कूर्मः शशः खड्गः सल्लकश्चेति सत्तमाः । भक्ष्यान्पंचनखान्नित्यं मनुराह प्रजापतिः
The iguana, tortoise, hare, rhinoceros, and porcupine—these five-clawed creatures are declared by Manu, lord of creatures, as edible.
मत्स्यान्सशल्कान्भुंजीत मांसं रौरवमेव च । निवेद्य देवताभ्यस्तु ब्राह्मणेभ्यश्च नान्यथा
One may eat fish with scales and the flesh of the raurava animal, but only after offering it to the gods and to Brahmins, not otherwise.
मयूरं तित्तिरं चैव कपोतं च कपिंजलम् । वार्ध्रीणसं बकं भक्ष्यं मीनं हंसं पराजितम्
The peacock, the partridge, the dove, the kapiñjala, the vulture, the crane, the edible fish, the swan, and the parājita are permitted as food.
शफरी सिंहतुंडं च तथा पाठीनरोहितौ । मत्स्याश्चैते समुद्दिष्टा भक्षणीया द्विजोत्तमाः
The shapharī, the simhatuṇḍa, as well as the pāṭhīna and the rohitā—these fish are specified as edible for excellent twice-born men.
प्रोक्षितं भक्षयेदेषां मांसं च द्विजकाम्यया । यथाविधि प्रयुक्तं च प्राणानामपि चात्यये
One should eat the flesh of these, purified, and only with the desire of a twice-born, as prescribed by rule, and even in times of life-threatening danger.
भक्षयेन्नैव मांसानि शेषभोजी न लिप्यते । औषधार्थमशक्तो वा नियोगाद्यज्ञकारणात्
One should not eat meat as a leftover; the one who eats leftovers is not tainted. For medicine, or if unable, or by command, or for the sake of sacrifice, it is permitted.
