व्यतिक्रामेन्न स्रवंतीं नाप्सु मैथुनमाचरेत् । चैत्यवृक्षं न वै छिंद्यान्नाप्सु ष्ठीवनमाचरेत्
One should not cross a flowing stream, nor engage in sexual acts in water; one should not cut a sacred tree, nor spit into water.
नास्थिभस्मकपालानि न केशान्न च कंटकान् । तुषांगारकरीषं वा नाधितिष्ठेत्कदाचन
One should never sit on bones, ashes, skulls, hair, thorns, husks, embers, or dung.
न चाग्निं लंघयेद्धीमान्नोपदध्यादधः क्वचित् । न चैनं पादतः कुर्य्याच्छूर्पेण न धमेद्बुधः
A wise person should not step over fire, nor place it below anything; nor should one touch it with the foot or fan it with a winnowing basket.
न वृक्षमवरोहेत नावेक्षेताशुचिः क्वचित् । अग्नौ न च क्षिपेदग्निं नाद्भिः प्रशमयेत्तथा
One should not climb a tree, nor look upon anything impure; one should not throw fire into fire, nor extinguish it with water.
सुहृन्मरणमात्रं वा स्वयं न श्रावयेत्परान् । अपण्यं कूटपण्यं वा विक्रयेन प्रयोजयेत्
One should not personally inform others of a friend's death; nor use for trade anything that is unfit or counterfeit.
न वह्निं मुखनिःश्वासैर्ज्वालयेन्नाशुचिर्बुधः । पुण्यस्थानोदकस्थाने सीमांतं वाहयेन्न तु
A wise person should not kindle fire with breath while impure; nor should one move boundary markers at holy places or water sources.
न भिंद्यात्पूर्वसमयमभ्युपेतं कदाचन । परस्परं पशून्व्याघ्रान्पक्षिणो न च योधयेत्
One should never break a prior agreement; nor make animals, tigers, or birds fight each other.
परबाधां न कुर्वीत जलवातातपादिभिः । कारयित्वा सुकर्माणि गुरून्पश्चान्न वंचयेत्
One should not harm others with water, wind, sun, or the like; nor deceive teachers after performing good deeds for them.
सायंप्रातर्गृहद्वारान्रक्षार्थं परिघट्टयेत् । बहिर्माल्यं सुगंधिं वा भार्यया सह भोजनम्
In the evening and morning, one should secure the house doors for protection; one should not eat outside, with fragrant garlands, or together with one's wife.
विगृह्य वादं कृत्वा वा प्रवेशं च विवर्जयेत् । नखादन्ब्राह्मणस्तिष्ठेन्न जल्पेद्वा हसेद्बुधः
After a quarrel or dispute, one should avoid entering; a Brahmin should not stand biting his nails, nor chatter or laugh.
स्वमग्निं चैव हस्तेन स्पृशेन्नाप्सुचिरं वसेत् । न पक्षकेणोपधमेन्न शूर्पेण च पाणिना
One should touch one's own fire with the hand, and not remain long in water; one should not fan with a wing or with a winnowing basket by hand.
मुखेनाग्निं समिंधीत मुखादग्निरजायत । परस्त्रियं न भाषेत नायाज्यं याजयेद्बुधः
One should kindle fire with the mouth, for fire was born from the mouth; one should not speak to another's wife, nor officiate at an unworthy sacrifice.
नैकश्चरेत्सदा विप्रः समुदायं च वर्जयेत् । न देवायतनं गच्छेत्कदाचिद्वाऽप्रदक्षिणम्
A Brahmin should not always wander alone, nor avoid company; one should never enter a temple without circumambulating it.
न पीडयेद्वा वस्त्राणि न देवायतने स्वपेत् । नैकोध्वानं प्रपद्येत नाधार्मिकजनै सह
One should not wring out clothes, nor sleep in a temple; one should not take a journey alone, nor associate with unrighteous people.
न व्याधिदूषितैर्वापि न शूद्रैः पतितेन वा । नोपानद्वर्जितो वाथ जलादिरहितस्तथा
Nor by those afflicted with disease, nor by Shudras, nor by the fallen; nor by one lacking footwear, nor by one deprived of water and the like.
न वर्त्मनि चितिं वाममतिक्रामेत्क्वचिद्द्विजः । न निंदेद्योगिनः सिद्धान्व्रतिनो वा यतींस्तथा
Let a twice-born never cross a funeral pyre on the path, nor ever disparage yogis, perfected beings, ascetics, or renunciants.
देवतायतनं प्राज्ञा देवानां चैव सत्रिणाम् । नाक्रामेत्कामतश्छायां ब्राह्मणानां च गोरपि
A wise person should not step upon the temple of a deity, nor upon the shade of sacrificial priests, nor upon the shade of Brahmins or cows, out of desire.
स्वां तु नाक्रामयेच्छायां पतिताद्यैर्न रोगिभिः । नांगारभस्मकेशादिष्वधितिष्ठेत्कदाचन
One should not step upon one's own shadow, nor upon the shadows of the fallen or the sick; nor ever stand upon embers, ashes, or hair and the like.
वर्जयेन्मार्जनी रेणुं स्नानवस्त्र घटोदकम् । न भक्षयेदभक्ष्याणि नापेयं च पिबेद्द्विजः
One should avoid dust from a broom, water from bathing clothes or a pot; a twice-born should not eat what is forbidden, nor drink what is not to be drunk.
व्यास उवाच- नाद्याच्छूद्रस्य विप्रोन्नं मोहाद्वा यदि कामतः । स शूद्रयोनिं व्रजति यस्तु भुंक्ते त्वनापदि
Vyasa said: A Brahmin should not eat food from a Shudra, whether out of delusion or desire; whoever eats it, except in distress, attains the birth of a Shudra.
षण्मासान्यो द्विजो भुंक्ते शूद्रस्यान्नं विगर्हितम् । जीवन्नेव भवेच्छूद्रो मृतः श्वा चाभिजायते
If a twice-born eats the condemned food of a Shudra for six months, he becomes a Shudra while living, and after death is born as a dog.
ब्राह्मणक्षत्रियविशां शूद्रस्य च मुनीश्वराः । यस्यान्नेनोदरस्थेन मृतस्तद्योनिमाप्नुयात्
O sages, among Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas, and Shudras, whoever dies with the food of another in his belly attains that birth.
राजान्नं वर्तकान्नं च षंढान्नं चर्म्मकारिणाम् । गणान्नं गणिकान्नं च षडन्नं च विवर्जयेत्
One should avoid food from kings, merchants, eunuchs, leather workers, guilds, courtesans, and the six kinds of food.
चक्रोपजीवि रजक तस्करध्वजिनां तथा । गांधर्वलोहकारान्नं मृतकान्नं विवर्जयेत्
One should avoid food from those who live by the wheel, washermen, thieves, banner-bearers, Gandharvas, blacksmiths, and the dead.
कुलाल चित्रकारान्नं वार्धुषेः पतितस्य च । पौनर्भवच्छत्रिकयोरभिशप्तस्य चैव हि
Food from potters, painters, barbers, the fallen, those born again, umbrella makers, and the cursed should also be avoided.
सुवर्णकार शैलूष व्याध वंध्यातुरस्य च । चिकित्सकस्य चैवान्नं पुंश्चल्या दंडकस्य च
Food from goldsmiths, actors, hunters, barren or sick persons, physicians, prostitutes, and those punished should be avoided.
स्तेन नास्तिकयोरन्नं देवतानिंदकस्य च । सोमविक्रयिणश्चान्नं श्वपाकस्य विशेषतः
Food from thieves, atheists, blasphemers of deities, sellers of Soma, and especially from dog-cookers should be avoided.
भार्य्याजितस्य चैवान्नं यस्य चोपपतिर्गृहे । उत्सृष्टस्य कदर्यस्य तथैवोच्छिष्टभोजिनः
Food from one whose wife has not been won, or whose lover is in the house, from those who are miserly, or who eat leftovers, should be avoided.
पापीयोन्नं च संघान्नं शस्त्राजीवस्य चैव हि । भीतस्य रुदितस्यान्नमवक्रुष्टं परिक्षतम्
Food from sinners, from groups, from those who live by the sword, from the fearful, from those who have cried, from the insulted or injured, should be avoided.
ब्रह्मद्विषः पापरुचेः श्राद्धान्नं मृतकस्य च । वृथापाकस्य चैवान्नं शावान्नं चातुरस्य च
Food from haters of Brahmins, those of evil taste, food for the dead, improperly cooked food, food from corpses, and from the four castes should be avoided.
