कृत्वा मूत्रं पुरीषं वा द्रव्यहस्तो न दुष्यति । निधाय दक्षिणे कर्णे ब्रह्मसूत्रमुदङ्मुखः
After passing urine or feces, a person holding sacred substances is not defiled, if he places the sacred thread on his right ear and faces north.
अह्नि कुर्याच्छकृन्मूत्रं रात्रौ चेद्दक्षिणामुखः । अंतर्धाय महीं काष्टैः पत्रैर्लोष्टतृणेन वा
During the day, one should pass stool and urine facing south; at night, facing north, and should cover the ground with wood, leaves, clods, or grass.
प्रावृत्य च शिरः कुर्याद्विण्मूत्रस्य विसर्जनम् । छायाकूपनदीगोष्ठचैत्यांभः पथि भस्मसु
One should cover the head while relieving oneself of stool or urine; not in the shade, a well, a riverbank, a cow pen, a shrine, water, on a road, or on ashes.
अग्नौ चैव श्मशाने च विण्मूत्रं न समाचरेत् । न गोमयेन काष्ठे वा महावृक्षेऽथ शाद्वले
One should never pass stool or urine into fire or in a cremation ground, nor on cow dung, wood, a large tree, or on green grass.
न तिष्ठन्न च निर्वासा न च पर्वतमंडले । न जीर्णदेवायतने वल्मीके न कदाचन
Not while standing, not without clothing, nor on a mountain top; never in an old temple, nor in an anthill.
न ससत्वेषु गर्तेषु न गच्छन्न समाचरेत् । तुषांगारकपालेषु राजमार्गे तथैव च
Not in pits where living beings dwell, nor while walking; not on husks, embers, potsherds, or on a royal road.
न क्षेत्रे न बिले वापि न तीर्थे न चतुष्पथे । नोद्यानेऽपासमीपे वा नोषरे नगराशये
Not in a field, nor in a hole, nor at a sacred ford, nor at a crossroads; not in a garden, near water, on barren ground, or in a city dwelling.
न सोपानत्पादुको वा छत्री वा नांतरिक्षके । न चैवाभिमुखः स्त्रीणां गुरुब्राह्मणयोर्गवाम्
Not on steps, wearing shoes, holding an umbrella, or in the open air; nor facing women, teachers, Brahmins, or cows.
न देवदेवालययोरपामपि कदाचन । न ज्योतींषि निरीक्षन्वानवाप्रतिमुखोथ वा
Never in temples of gods or near water; not while looking at lights, forests, or images.
प्रत्यादित्यं प्रत्यनलं प्रतिसोमं तथैव च । आहृत्य मृत्तिकां कूलाल्लेपगंधापकर्षणीम्
Not facing the sun, fire, or the moon; one should bring clean earth from a riverbank for cleansing, which removes odor and impurity.
कुर्यादतंद्रितः शौचं विशुद्धैरुद्धृतोदकैः । नाहरेन्मृतिकां विप्रः पांशुलां न सकर्दमाम्
One should perform purification attentively, using clean water drawn for the purpose; a Brahmin should not use earth that is dusty or muddy.
न मार्गान्नोषराद्देशाच्छौचशिष्टां परस्य च । न देवायतनात्कूपाद्धाम्नो न च जलात्तथा
Nor should he take earth from roads, barren places, or from another's cleansing spot; nor from a temple, a well, a house, or from water.
उपस्पृशेत्ततो नित्यं पूर्वोक्तेन विधानतः
Afterwards, one should always rinse oneself as previously instructed.
इति श्रीपाद्मे महापुराणे स्वर्गखंडे कर्मयोगकथने। द्विपंचाशत्तमोऽध्यायः
Thus ends the fifty-second chapter in the section on Karma Yoga in the Svarga Khanda of the glorious Padma Purana.
व्यास उवाच- एवं दंडादिभिर्युक्तः शौचाचारसमन्वितः । आहूतोध्यापनं कुर्याद्वीक्ष्यमाणो गुरोर्मुखम्
Vyasa said: Thus, equipped with staff and other requisites, observing the rules of purity, one should recite or teach when summoned, looking toward the teacher's face.
नित्यमुद्यतपाणिः स्यात्साध्वाचारः सुसंयतः । आस्यतामिति चोक्तः सन्नासीताभिमुखं गुरोः
He should always be attentive, of good conduct, well-controlled; when told 'be seated,' he should sit facing the teacher.
प्रतिश्रवणसंभाषे शयानो न समाचरेत् । आसीनो न च भुंजानो न तिष्ठेन्न पराङ्मुखः
He should not converse with the teacher while lying down, nor while eating, nor while standing, nor with his back turned.
नीचैः शय्यासनं चास्य सर्वदा गुरुसन्निधौ । गुरोस्तु चक्षुर्विषयेन यथेष्टासनो भवेत्
In the teacher's presence, his seat and bed should always be lower; but if the teacher allows, he may sit as he wishes within the teacher's sight.
नोदाहरेदस्य नाम परोक्षमपि केवलम् । न चैवास्यानुकुर्वीत गतिभाषणचेष्टितम्
One should not utter the name of the teacher, even indirectly or alone; nor should one imitate the teacher’s manner of walking, speaking, or gestures.
गुरोर्यत्र परीवादो निंदा वापि प्रवर्तते । कर्णौ तत्र पिधातव्यौ गंतव्यं वा ततोऽन्यतः
Wherever criticism or disparagement of the teacher arises, one should cover one’s ears or depart from that place.
दूरस्थो नार्चयेदेनं न क्रुद्धो नांतिके स्त्रियः । न चैवास्योत्तरं ब्रूयात्स्थितो नासीत सन्निधौ
One should not worship the teacher from afar, nor approach him in anger or among women; nor should one reply to him, nor remain seated in his presence.
उदकुंभं कुशान्पुष्पं समिधोऽस्याहरेत्सदा । मार्जनं लेपनं नित्यमंगानां वै समाचरेत्
One should always bring water pots, sacred grass, flowers, and firewood for him; regularly perform cleaning and anointing of his limbs.
नास्य निर्माल्यशयनं पादुकोपानहावपि । आक्रामेदासनं चास्य च्छायादीन्वा कदाचन
One should never step on his discarded garlands, bedding, footwear, or sandals, nor sit on his seat or enter his shadow.
साधयेद्दंतकाष्ठादींल्लब्धं चास्मै निवेदयेत् । अनापृच्छ्य न गंतव्यं भवेत्प्रियहिते रतः
One should prepare tooth-sticks and similar items, and offer them to him; one should not depart without his permission, and should delight in what pleases and benefits him.
न पादौ सारयेदस्य सन्निधाने कदाचन । जृंभितं हसितं चैव कंठप्रावरणं तथा
One should never drag one’s feet in his presence; yawning, laughing, and covering the throat should also be avoided.
वर्जयेत्सन्निधौ नित्यमंगस्फोटनमेव च । यथाकालमधीयीत यावन्न विमना गुरुः
One should always avoid cracking the limbs in his presence; study at the proper time, so long as the teacher is not displeased.
आसीनोऽधो गुरोः पार्श्वे सेवां च सुसमाहितः । आसने शयने याने नैव तिष्ठेत्कदाचन
Seated below or beside the teacher, one should serve him with full attention; one should never stand on his seat, bed, or vehicle.
धावंतमनुधावेत गच्छंतमनुगच्छति । गोश्वोष्ट्रयानप्रासादे तथाधोविष्टरेषु च
One should follow him when he runs, and accompany him when he goes; likewise in cow, horse, camel, palanquin, or on the ground below.
आसीत गुरुणा सार्द्धं शिलाफलक नौषु च । जितेंद्रियः स्यात्सततं वश्यात्माक्रोधनः शुचिः
One should sit with the teacher on rocks, boards, or boats; always be self-controlled, obedient, free from anger, and pure.
प्रयुंजीत सदा वाचं मधुरां हितकारिणीम् । गंधमाल्यं रसं कल्पं शुक्तिं प्राणिविहिंसनम्
One should always use speech that is sweet and beneficial; avoid fragrances, garlands, flavors, prepared foods, and harming living beings.
