चतुर्भुजं महादंष्ट्रं कालरूपं दुरासदम् । सूर्यकोटिप्रतीकाशं यमकोटिदुरासदम् । सिंहवच्च मुखं यस्य नरवच्चांगसंयुतम्
With four arms, great fangs, a form of time, difficult to approach, resembling ten million suns, hard to approach even for ten million Yamas; whose face is like a lion and limbs are joined with those of a man.
श्रीनृसिंहं दिव्यसिंहं कालरूपं भजेत्सदा । एवं ज्ञात्वा विशेषेण यः स्थानं मामकं व्रजेत्
One should always worship Sri Narasimha, the divine lion, the form of time. Whoever, knowing this especially, approaches my place.
व्रतं पवित्रं परमं श्रीकदंब प्रदं महत् । अंते मुक्तिप्रदं चैव भक्तानां च न संशयः
The vow is pure, supreme, bestows prosperity, and is great; at the end, it grants liberation to devotees, without doubt.
येन वै क्रियमाणेन सहस्रद्वादशी फलम् । स्वाती नक्षत्र संयोगे शनिवारे तु मद्व्रतम्
By performing it, one attains the fruit of a thousand Dvadasis; when my vow is observed on a Saturday during the conjunction with the Svati star.
सिद्धियोगस्य संयोगे वणिजे करणे तथा । योगैः सर्वैश्च संयोगं हत्याकोटि विनाशनम्
During the conjunction of Siddhi Yoga, in the merchant's karana, and with all yogas, its conjunction destroys ten million sins.
एतदन्यतरैर्योगे मद्दिनं पापनाशनम् । विज्ञाय मद्दिनं यस्तु लंघयेत्स तु पापकृत्
On any of these yogas, my day destroys sin. Whoever, knowing my day, transgresses it, becomes a sinner.
अकर्त्ता नरकं याति यावच्चंद्र दिवाकरौ । प्राप्ते मम दिने वत्स दंतधावनपूर्वकम्
One who does not perform this goes to hell for as long as the moon and sun endure; but when my day arrives, O child, after brushing the teeth,
ममाग्रे व्रतसंकल्पं मद्भक्तो विजितेंद्रियः । अद्याहं ते विधास्यामि व्रतं निर्विघ्नतां नय
In my presence, with a vow firmly resolved, my devotee who has mastered the senses—today I will establish the vow for you; carry it out without obstacle.
व्रतस्थेन न कर्त्तव्यं दुष्टसंभाषणादिकम् । ततो मध्याह्नसमये नद्यादौ विमले जले
One who is observing the vow must not engage in wicked speech or similar acts; then, at midday, in a river or other pure water,
गृहे वा देवखाते वा तडागे वाथ शोभने । वैदिकेन तु मंत्रेण स्नानं कुर्याद्विचक्षणः 6.174.
Whether at home, in a temple tank, or in a beautiful pond, the wise should bathe with Vedic mantras.
मृत्तिका गोमयेनैव तथा धात्रीफलेन च । तिलैश्च विधिवत्स्नायात्सर्वपापौघ शांतये
With earth, cow dung, and also with the fruit of the emblic myrobalan, and with sesame, one should bathe according to the proper rite for the removal of all accumulated sins.
परिधाय शुभे वस्त्रे नित्यकर्म समारभेत् । ततो गृहं विलिप्याथ कुर्यादष्टदलं शुभम्
Having put on clean garments, one should begin the daily duties; then, after smearing the house, one should make an auspicious eight-petaled design.
कलशं तत्र संस्थाप्य ताम्रंत्रसमन्वितम् । तस्योपरि न्यसेत्पात्रं तंडुलैः परिपूरितम्
There, one should place a pot adorned with copper yantras, and upon it set a vessel filled with rice grains.
हैमीं च तत्र मन्मूर्ति स्थाप्य लक्ष्म्या समन्विताम् । निर्माय शक्त्या स्वर्णेन स्नाप्य पंचामृतैस्ततः
And there, establish my golden image together with Lakshmi; having crafted it with skill from gold, then bathe it with the five nectars.
ततो ब्राह्मणमाहूय आचार्यं नातिलोलुपम् । शास्त्रज्ञमग्रतः कृत्वा ततो देवं समर्चयेत्
Then, having invited a Brahmin teacher who is not overly greedy and is learned in the scriptures, placing him at the forefront, one should then worship the deity.
मंडपं कारयेत्तत्र पुष्पस्तबक शोभितम् । ऋतुकालोद्भवैः पुष्पैः पूज्योऽहं च यथाविधि
There, one should construct a pavilion adorned with clusters of flowers; with seasonal flowers, I am to be worshipped according to the proper method.
उपचारैः षोडशभिर्मंत्रैर्नियमैश्च यः । ततः पौराणिकैर्मंत्रैः पूजनीयो विशेषतः
With sixteen offerings, with mantras and observances, and especially with Puranic mantras, I am to be worshipped.
चंदनं च सकर्पूरं घनकुंकुममिश्रितम् । कालोद्भवानि पुष्पाणि तथा तुलसीदलानि च
Sandalwood mixed with camphor and dense saffron, flowers of the season, and also leaves of tulasi,
श्रीनृसिंहाय यो दद्यात्स मुक्तो नात्र संशयः । कृष्णागुरुमयं धूपं सर्वदा हरिवल्लभम्
Whoever offers these to Shri Narasimha is liberated—there is no doubt of this; always offer incense made of black aloe, beloved of Hari.
हरये गुरवे दद्यात्सर्वकामार्थसिद्धये । महादीपः प्रकर्त्तव्यो ह्यज्ञानध्वांत नाशनः । महानीराजनं कुर्याद्घंटानाद पुरःसरम्
Offer to Hari, the Guru, for the fulfillment of all desires and aims; a great lamp should be made, which destroys the darkness of ignorance; perform the great waving of lights, accompanied by the sound of bells.
नैवेद्यं शर्करां चापि भक्ष्यभौज्यसमन्वितम् । ददामि ते रमाकांत सर्वपापक्षयं कुरु
Offer naivedya—sugar and various foods to be eaten and enjoyed; I offer this to you, beloved of Lakshmi—destroy all my sins.
नैवेद्य मंत्र। नृसिंहाच्युत देवेश तव जन्मदिने शुभे । उपवासं करिष्यामि सर्वभोगविवर्जितः
Naivedya mantra: O Narasimha, Achyuta, Lord of the gods, on your auspicious birthday I will observe a fast, renouncing all enjoyments.
तेन प्रीतो भव स्वामिन्पापं जन्म निराकुरु । रात्रौ जागरणं कार्यं गीतवादित्र निःस्वनैः
Thus, be pleased, O Lord; remove the sins of birth. At night, one should keep vigil with the sounds of song and musical instruments.
पुराणपठनं नित्यं श्रीनृसिंकथाश्रयम् । ततः प्रभातसमये स्नानं कृत्वा ह्यनंतरम्
One should always recite the Puranas, especially the stories of Shri Narasimha; then, at dawn, immediately after bathing,
पूर्वोक्तेन विधानेन पूजयेन्मां प्रतर्पयन् । वैष्णवं कारयेच्छ्राद्धं मदग्रे स्वस्थमानसः
One should worship me and satisfy me according to the method previously described, and, with a tranquil mind, perform a Vaiṣṇava śrāddha in my presence.
ततो दानानि देयानि वक्ष्यमाणानि यान्युत । पात्रेभ्यः स द्विजेभ्यो हि लोकद्वय जिगीषया
Then, the gifts to be given, which will be stated, should indeed be offered to worthy recipients and to the twice-born, with the desire to conquer both worlds.
सहस्वर्णमयो देवो मम संतोषकारकः । गोभूतिलहिरण्यादि प्रददाति द्विजातये
A golden deity, weighing a thousand units, brings me satisfaction; one should give cows, land, gold, and the like to a twice-born.
शय्या सतूलिका देया सप्तधान्यसमन्विता । अन्यानि च यथाशक्त्या देयानि निजशक्तितः
A bed with bedding should be given, along with seven kinds of grain; other gifts should also be given according to one’s ability and means.
वित्तशाठ्यं न कुर्वीत यथोक्तफलकांक्षया । ब्राह्मणान्भोजयेत्पश्चात्तेभ्यो दद्यात्सुदक्षिणाम्
One should not act with miserliness regarding wealth, desiring the stated results; afterwards, one should feed the brāhmaṇas and give them proper gifts.
निर्धनैरपि कर्त्तव्यं देयं शक्त्यनुसारतः । सर्वेषामेव वर्णानामधिकारोऽस्ति मद्व्रते । मद्भक्तैस्तु विशेषेण कर्त्तव्यं मत्परायणैः
Even those without wealth should perform and give according to their capacity; all varṇas indeed have the right to my vow, but my devotees, especially those devoted to me, should certainly perform it.
