तत्र स्नात्वा दिवं यांति ये मृतास्तेऽपुनर्भवाः । ज्वालेश्वरे महाराज यस्तु प्राणान्परित्यजेत्
There, those who bathe and depart this life ascend to heaven and do not return to mortal existence; O great king, whoever relinquishes their life at Jvāleśvara—
चंद्र सूर्योपरागे तु भक्त्यापि शृणु तत्फलम् । अमरा नाम देवास्ते पर्वतेऽमरकंटके
Hear now the result, even if one listens with devotion during an eclipse of the moon or sun: the gods called Amara dwell on the mountain Amara-kaṇṭaka.
रुद्रलोकमवाप्नोति यावदाभूतसंप्लवम् । अमरेश्वरस्य देवस्य पर्वतस्य तटे जले
One attains the realm of Rudra until the dissolution of creation; at the waters on the slope of Amareśvara, the divine mountain—
कोटिश ऋषिमुख्यास्ते तपस्तप्यंति सुव्रताः । समंताद्योजनं राजन्क्षेत्रं चामरकंटकम्
Countless eminent sages, steadfast in their vows, perform austerities there; O king, the sacred region of Amara-kaṇṭaka extends for a yojana in every direction.
अकामो वा सकामो वा नर्मदायां शुभे जले । स्नात्वा मुच्येत पापेभ्यो रुद्रलोकं स गच्छति
Whether desiring or without desire, one who bathes in the auspicious waters of the Narmadā is freed from sins and attains the realm of Rudra.
नारद उवाच- उत्तरे नर्मदाकूले तीर्थं योजनविस्तृतम् । पत्रेश्वरेति विख्यातं सर्वपापहरं परम्
Nārada said: On the northern bank of the Narmadā lies a sacred place, a yojana wide, known as Patreśvara, supreme and remover of all sins.
तत्र स्नात्वा नरो राजन्दैवतैः सह मोदते । पंचवर्षसहस्राणि क्रीडते कामरूपधृक्
There, O king, one who bathes rejoices with the gods, and for five thousand years plays, assuming any form at will.
गर्जनं तु ततो गच्छेद्यत्र मेघ उपस्थितः । इंद्रजिन्नाम संप्राप्तं तस्य तीर्थप्रभावतः
From there, proceed to Garjana, where the clouds gather; by the power of that sacred place, Indrajit has arrived.
मेघरावं ततो गच्छेद्यत्र मेघाभिगर्जितम् । मेघनादो गणस्तत्र वरसंपन्नतां गतः
Next, proceed to Megharāva, where the thunder of clouds resounds; there, the group called Meghanāda has attained exceptional excellence.
ततो गच्छेत राजेंद्र ब्रह्मावर्तमिति स्मृतम् । तत्र संनिहितो ब्रह्मा नित्यमेव युधिष्ठिर
Then, O king, proceed to Brahmāvarta, so named; there, Brahmā is always present, O Yudhiṣṭhira.
तत्र स्नात्वा तु राजेंद्र ब्रह्मलोके महीयते । ततोंऽगारेश्वरे तीर्थे नियतो नियमाशनः
There, O king, one who bathes is honored in the realm of Brahmā; then, at the sacred place of Aṅgāreśvara, one should observe discipline and regulated eating.
सर्वपापविशुद्धात्मा रुद्रलोकं स गच्छति । ततो गच्छेत राजेंद्र कपिलातीर्थमुत्तमम्
With the soul purified from all sins, he attains the realm of Rudra; then, O king, proceed to the excellent Kapilā-tīrtha.
तत्र स्नात्वा नरो राजन्गोप्रदानफलं लभेत् । कांचीतीर्थं ततो गच्छेद्देवर्षिगणसेवितम्
There, O king, one who bathes obtains the merit of gifting a cow; then proceed to Kāṃcī-tīrtha, attended by hosts of divine sages.
तत्र स्नात्वा नरो राजन्गोलोकं समवाप्नुयात् । ततो गच्छेत्तु राजेंद्र कुंडलेश्वरमुत्तमम्
There, O king, one who bathes attains the world of cows; then, O king, proceed to the excellent Kuṇḍaleśvara.
तत्र संनिहितो रुद्रस्तिष्ठते उमया सह । तत्र स्नात्वा तु राजेंद्र अवध्यस्त्रिदशैरपि
There, Rudra stands present with Umā; O king, one who bathes there becomes invulnerable even to the gods.
पिप्पलेश्वरं ततो गच्छेत्सर्वपापप्रणाशनम् । तत्र गत्वा तु राजेंद्र रुद्रलोके महीयते
Then proceed to Pippaleśvara, destroyer of all sins; O king, having gone there, one is honored in the realm of Rudra.
ततो गच्छेत्तु राजेंद्र विमलं विमलेश्वरम् । तत्र देवशिखा रम्या ईश्वरेण निपातिता
Then, O king, proceed to Vimala, to Vimaleśvara; there, the beautiful crest of the god was cast down by Īśvara.
तत्र प्राणान्परित्यज्य रुद्रलोकमवाप्नुयाम् । ततः पुष्करिणीं गच्छेत्तत्र स्नानं समाचरेत्
There, by relinquishing one's life, one attains the realm of Rudra; then proceed to Puṣkariṇī and perform bathing there.
स्नानमात्रे नरस्तत्र इंद्रस्यार्द्धासनं लभेत् । नर्मदा सरितां श्रेष्ठा रुद्रदेहाद्विनिःसृता
By merely bathing there, a person attains half the seat of Indra; Narmada is the best of rivers, having emerged from the body of Rudra.
तारयेत्सर्वभूतानि स्थावराणि चराणि च । सर्वदेवातिदेवेन ईश्वरेण महात्मना
She delivers all beings, both immobile and mobile, by the Supreme Lord of all gods, the great soul Ishvara.
कथिता ऋषिसंघेभ्यो ह्यस्माकं च विशेषतः । मुनिभिः संस्तुता ह्येषा नर्मदा प्रवरा नदी
She has been described to the assembly of sages, and especially to us; this excellent river Narmada has been praised by the sages.
रुद्रदेहाद्विनिष्क्रांता लोकानां हितकाम्यया । सर्वपापहरा नित्यं सर्वप्राणिनमस्कृता
Having issued forth from the body of Rudra, for the welfare of the worlds, she ever removes all sins and is honored by all living beings.
संस्तुता देवगंधर्वैरप्सरोभिस्तथैव च । नमः पुण्यजले आद्ये नमः सागरगामिनि
Praised by the gods, Gandharvas, and likewise by the Apsaras, obeisance to you, O primeval holy water, obeisance to you who go to the ocean.
नमोस्तु ते ऋषिगणैः शंकरदेहनिःसृते । नमोस्तु ते धर्मवृते वरानने नमोस्तु ते देवगणैकवंदिते
Obeisance to you, who emerged from the body of Shankara, honored by hosts of sages; obeisance to you, upholder of righteousness, beautiful one, obeisance to you, worshipped by all the hosts of gods.
नमोस्तु ते सर्वपवित्रपावने नमोस्तु ते सर्वजगत्सुपूजिते । यश्चेदं पठते स्तोत्रं नित्यं शुद्धेन मानवः
Obeisance to you, purifier of all that is pure; obeisance to you, greatly worshipped by the whole world. Whoever recites this hymn daily with purity, O human,
ब्राह्मणो वेदमाप्नोति क्षत्त्रियो विजयी भवेत् । वैश्यस्तु लभते लाभं शूद्रश्चैव शुभां गतिम्
A Brahmin attains the Veda, a Kshatriya becomes victorious, a Vaishya gains profit, and a Shudra attains an auspicious state.
अन्नार्थी लभते ह्यन्नं स्मरणादेव नित्यशः । नर्मदां सेव्यते नित्यं स्वयं देवो महेश्वरः । तेन पुण्या नदी ज्ञेया ब्रह्महत्यापहारिणी
One who desires food obtains food simply by remembering her always; Narmada is ever served by the god Maheshvara himself. Therefore, this river is to be known as holy, the remover of the sin of Brahmin-killing.
नारद उवाच-। तदाप्रभृति ब्रह्माद्या ऋषयश्च तपोधनाः । सेवंते नर्मदां राजन्कामक्रोधविवर्जिताः
Narada said: From that time onward, Brahma and other ascetics rich in austerity, free from desire and anger, serve Narmada, O King.
तस्मिन्निपति तं दृष्ट्वा शूलं देवस्य भूतले । तस्य पुण्यं समाख्यातं शंकरेण महात्मना
There, having seen that trident of the god fallen upon the earth, its merit was declared by the great-souled Shankara.
शूलभेदेति विख्यातं तीर्थं पुण्यतमं महत् । तत्र स्नात्वार्च्चयेद्देवं गोसहस्रफलं लभेत्
That holy place is renowned as Shulabheda, the most sacred and great; there, by bathing and worshipping the god, one obtains the merit of a thousand cows.
