Unattainable by the asuras, even with hundreds of bodies, not distressed by many bodies; I bow, O Lord, to you, bearer of the crescent moon, worshipped by many devotees.
With sons, wives, and all wealth, always grant me victory and remembrance; I am tormented by many bodies, and today I have reached the path to great hell.
One's birth does not turn back, nor does wicked destiny; even pure and virtuous deeds are abandoned. Compassion falters, the mind wanders, and delusion prevails—this is the error that misguided intellect brings.
Whoever, with pure mind and devotion, recites this divine hymn, for him Rudra will grant boons just as he did for Bāṇa.
Hearing this great and divine hymn, the god Maheśvara, being pleased, himself bestows his favor upon that person.
Īśvara said: 'Do not be afraid, my child; remain in the golden city, O Dānava, together with your sons, grandsons, wives, and attendants.'
From this day forth, O Bāṇa, you are invulnerable even to the gods; this boon was granted to you by the Lord of gods, O Pāṇḍava.
He became imperishable and undecaying in the world, roaming about without fear; then Rudra restrained Saptashikha as well.
The third (city) was protected by the great-souled Śaṃkara; by the power of Rudra's energy, it eternally moves in the sky.
Thus Tripura was burned by the great-souled Śaṃkara; blazing with garlands of flames, it fell to the earth.
One (city) was cast down at Śrīśaila by the destroyer of Tripura; the second was cast down there on the mountain Amarakāṇṭaka.
When Tripura was burned, O king, Rudra's energy was established there; the blazing (city) was cast down there, hence it is known as Jvāleśvara.
A divine flame rose upward from it and reached the heavens; then there arose a great outcry among the gods, asuras, and kinnaras.
Rudra restrained that arrow at the foremost Maheśvara shrine; whoever goes to that mountain, Amarakāṇṭaka, in this way—
Having enjoyed the fourteen worlds, O descendant of Pāṇḍu, for a thousand million years and thirty million more—
After that, attaining the earth, he becomes a righteous king; he rules the earth under a single umbrella—of this there is no doubt.
This Amarakāṇṭaka is supremely holy, O great king; whoever goes to Amarakāṇṭaka during a solar or lunar eclipse—
The wise declare that seeing Maheśvara there yields ten times the merit of an Aśvamedha sacrifice; one attains the heavenly world.
When the sun is seized by Rāhu, those who assemble and go there receive all that merit on the mountain Amarakāṇṭaka.
A person attains the fruit of the Puṇḍarīka sacrifice; there, on the mountain Amarakāṇṭaka, is the deity called Jvāleśvara.
There, those who bathe and depart this life ascend to heaven and do not return to mortal existence; O great king, whoever relinquishes their life at Jvāleśvara—
Hear now the result, even if one listens with devotion during an eclipse of the moon or sun: the gods called Amara dwell on the mountain Amara-kaṇṭaka.
One attains the realm of Rudra until the dissolution of creation; at the waters on the slope of Amareśvara, the divine mountain—
Countless eminent sages, steadfast in their vows, perform austerities there; O king, the sacred region of Amara-kaṇṭaka extends for a yojana in every direction.
Whether desiring or without desire, one who bathes in the auspicious waters of the Narmadā is freed from sins and attains the realm of Rudra.
Nārada said: On the northern bank of the Narmadā lies a sacred place, a yojana wide, known as Patreśvara, supreme and remover of all sins.
There, O king, one who bathes rejoices with the gods, and for five thousand years plays, assuming any form at will.
From there, proceed to Garjana, where the clouds gather; by the power of that sacred place, Indrajit has arrived.
Next, proceed to Megharāva, where the thunder of clouds resounds; there, the group called Meghanāda has attained exceptional excellence.
Then, O king, proceed to Brahmāvarta, so named; there, Brahmā is always present, O Yudhiṣṭhira.
