दुर्गामंतः शिलां चैव ब्रह्ममेध्यां दृषद्वतीम् । परोक्षामथ रोहीं च तथा जंबूनदीमपि
The Durgāmaṃtaḥśilā, the Brahmamedhyā, the Dṛṣadvatī, the Parokṣā, the Rohī, and likewise the Jaṃbūnadī.
सुनासां तमसां दासीं सामान्यां वरणामसिम् । नीलां धृतिकरीं चैव पर्णाशां च महानदीम्
The Sunāsā, the Tamasā, the Dāsī, the Sāmānyā, the Varaṇā, the Nīlā, the Dhṛtikarī, and the Parṇāśā, the great river.
मानवीं वृषभां भासां ब्रह्ममेध्यां दृषद्वतीम् । एताश्चान्याश्च बहुला महानद्यो द्विजर्षभाः
The Mānavī, the Vṛṣabhā, the Bhāsā, the Brahmamedhyā, the Dṛṣadvatī—these and many other great rivers, O best of twice-born.
सदा निरामयां कृष्णां मंदगां मंदवाहिनीम् । ब्राह्मणीं च महागौरीं दुर्गामपि च सत्तमाः
The ever-healthy Kṛṣṇā, the slow-flowing Maṃdagā, the Maṃdavāhinī, the Brāhmaṇī, the Mahāgaurī, and also the Durgā, O best ones.
चित्रोत्पलां चित्ररथामतुलां रोहिणीं तथा । मंदाकिनीं वैतरणीं कोकां चापि महानदीम्
The Citrotpalā, the Citrarathā, the unequalled Atulā, the Rohiṇī, the Maṃdākinī, the Vaitaraṇī, and the Kokā, the great river.
शुक्तिमतीमनंगां च तथैव वृषसाह्वयाम् । लोहित्यां करतोयां च तथैव वृषकात्वयाम्
The Śuktimatī, the Anaṃgā, likewise the Vṛṣasāhvayā, the Lohityā, the Karatoyā, and also the Vṛṣakātvayā.
कुमारीमृषितुल्यां च मारिषां च सरस्वतीम् । मंदाकिनीं सुपुण्यां च सर्वां गंगां च सत्तमाः
The Kumārī, the Mṛṣitulyā, the Māriṣā, the Sarasvatī, the supremely holy Maṃdākinī, and all the Gaṅgā, O best ones.
विश्वस्य मातरः सर्वाः सर्वाश्चैव महाफलाः । तथा नद्यः सुप्रकाशाः शतशोथ सहस्रशः
All these are mothers of the universe, all are of great fruit; likewise, the rivers are illustrious, in hundreds and thousands.
इत्येता सरितो विप्राः समाख्याता यथास्मृति । अतऊर्द्ध्वं जनपदान्निबोध गदतो मम
Thus, O Brahmins, these rivers have been described according to tradition; now listen as I recount the regions beyond them.
तत्रेमे कुरुपांचालाः शाल्वमात्रेय जांगलाः । शूरसेनाः पुलिंदाश्च बौधामालास्तथैव च
Here are the Kurus, Panchalas, Shalvas, Maitreyas, Jangalas, Shurasenas, Pulindas, and also the Baudhāmālas.
मत्स्याः कुशट्टाः सौगंध्याः कुत्सपाः काशिकोशलाः । चेदिमत्स्यकरूषाश्च भोजाः सिंधुपुलिंदकाः
The Matsyas, Kushaṭṭas, Saugandhyas, Kutsapas, Kashis, Kosalas, Cedis, Matsyas, Karushas, Bhojas, Sindhus, and Pulindakas.
उत्तमाश्च दशार्णाश्च मेकलाश्चोत्कलैः सह । पंचालाः कोशलाश्चैव नैकपृष्ठयुगंधराः
The Uttamas, Dasharnas, Mekalas together with the Utkalas, Panchalas, Kosalas, and the many Prishthayugandharas.
बोधा मद्राः कलिंगाश्च काशयो परकाशयः । जठराः कुकुराश्चैव सुदशार्णाः सुसत्तमाः
The Bodhas, Madras, Kalingas, Kashayas, Parakashayas, Jatharas, Kukuras, Sudaśarnas, and the most excellent Susattamas.
कुंतयोऽवंतयश्चैव तथैवापरकुंतयः । गोमंता मल्लकाः पुंड्राः विदर्भा नृपवाहिकाः
The Kuntis, Avantis, and also the Aparakuntis, Gomantas, Mallakas, Pundras, Vidarbhas, and Nṛpavāhikas.
अश्मकाः सोत्तराश्चैव गोपराष्ट्राः कनीयसः । अधिराज्यकुशट्टाश्च मल्लराष्ट्राश्च केरलाः
The Ashmakas and the northern Ashmakas, Goparashtras, Kanīyasas, Adhirajya Kushaṭṭas, Mallarashtras, and Keralas.
मालवाश्चोपवास्याश्च चक्रावक्रालयाः शकाः । विदेहा मगधाः सद्मा मलजा विजयास्तथा
The Malavas, Upavasyas, Chakravakralayas, Shakas, Videhas, Magadhas, Sadmas, Malajas, and Vijayas.
अंगा वंगाः कलिंगाश्च यकृल्लोमान एव च । मल्लाः सुदेष्णाः प्रह्लादा महिषाः शशकास्तथा
The Angas, Vangas, Kalingas, Yakṛllomanas, Mallas, Sudeṣṇas, Prahladas, Mahishas, and Shashakas.
बाह्लिका वाटधानाश्च आभीराः कालतोयकाः । अपरांताः परांताश्च पंकलाश्चर्मचंडिकाः
The Bahlikas, Vatadhanas, Abhiras, Kalatoyakas, Aparantas, Parantas, Pankalas, and Carmacandikas.
अटवीशेखराश्चैव मेरुभूताश्च सत्तमाः । उपावृतानुपावृताः सुराष्ट्राः केकयास्तथा
The Atavī Shekharas, those who dwell on Meru, the Upāvṛtas and Anupāvṛtas, Suraṣṭras, and Kekayas.
कुट्टापरांता माहेयाः कक्षाः सामुद्र निष्कुटाः । अंधाश्च बहवो विप्रा अंतर्गिर्यस्तथैव च
The Kutta Aparantas, Maheyas, Kakshas, Samudra Nishkutas, and many Andhas, as well as those within the mountains.
बहिर्गिर्य्योंगमलदा मगधा मालवार्घटाः । सत्त्वतराः प्रावृषेयाः भार्गवाश्च द्विजर्षभाः
Those outside the mountains—Yongamaladas, Magadhas, Malava Arghatas, the most virtuous Prāvṛṣeyas, and the Bhārgavas, best among twice-born.
पुंड्रा भार्गाः किराताश्च सुदेष्णा भासुरास्तथा । शका निषादा निषधास्तथैवानर्त नैऋताः
The Pundras, Bhargas, Kiratas, Sudeṣṇas, Bhāsuras, Shakas, Nishadas, Nishadhas, Anartas, and Nairitas.
पूर्णलाः पूतिमत्स्याश्च कुंतला कुशकास्तथा । तरिग्रहाश्शूरसेना ईजिकाः कल्पकारणाः
The Purnalas, Putimatsyas, Kuntalas, Kushakas, Tarigrahas, Shurasenas, Ijikas, and Kalpakaranas.
तिलभागामसाराश्च मधुमत्ताः ककुंदकाः । काश्मीराः सिंधुसौवीरा गांधारा दर्शकास्तथा
The Tilabhagas, Masaras, Madhumattas, Kakundakas, Kashmiras, Sindhusauvīras, Gandharas, and Darshakas.
अभीसाराः कुद्रुताश्च सौरिला बाह्लिकास्तथा । दर्वी च मालवा दर्वा वातजामरथोरगाः
The Abhisaras, Kudrutas, Saurilas, Bahlikas, Darvi, Malavas, Darvas, and the Vatajamara Thoragas.
बलरट्टास्तथा विप्राः सुदामानः मुमल्लिकाः । बंधाकरीकषाश्चैव कुलिंदा गंधिकास्तथा
The Balaraṭṭas, O Brahmins, Sudāmanas, Mumallikas, Bandhakari Kaṣas, Kulindas, and Gandhikas.
वनायवोदशाः पार्श्वरोमाणः कुशबिंदवः । काच्छा गोपालकच्छाश्च जांगलाः कुरुवर्णकाः
The Vanāyavas, Odaśas, Pārśvas, Romāṇas, Kuśabindavas, Kāchchhas, Gopālakachchhas, Jāngalas, and Kuruvarṇakas—
किराताबर्बराः सिद्धा वैदेहास्ताम्रलिप्तिकाः । औड्रम्लेच्छाः ससैरिंद्राः पार्वतीयाश्च सत्तमाः
The Kirātas, Barbaras, Siddhas, Vaidehas, Tāmraliṭikas, Auḍras, Mlecchas, Sairindhras, and the noble Pārvatīyas—
अथापरे जनपदा दक्षिणा मुनिपुंगवाः । द्रविडाः केरलाः प्राच्या मूषिका बालमूषिकाः
And other southern peoples, O best of sages: Draviḍas, Keralas, Prācyas, Mūṣikas, and Bālamūṣikas—
कर्णाटका माहिषका विकंधा मूषिकास्तथा । झल्लिकाः कुंतलाश्चैव सौहृदानलकाननाः
Karṇāṭakas, Māhiṣakas, Vikaṃdhas, Mūṣikas as well, Jhallikas, Kuṃtalas, Sauhṛdas, and Alakānanās—
