कुशिकस्यैव राजर्षेर्गाधेश्चैव महात्मनः । सोमस्य चैव राजर्षेर्दिलीपस्य तथैव च
Of Kushika, the royal sage, and of the great-souled Gadhi, of Soma, the royal sage, and likewise of Dilipa.
अन्येषां च महाभागाः क्षत्रियाणां बलीयसाम् । सर्वेषामेव भूतानां प्रियं भारतमुत्तमम्
And of other greatly fortunate and powerful Kshatriyas; the supreme land of Bharata is dear to all beings.
ततो वर्षं प्रवक्ष्यामि यथाश्रुतमहो द्विजाः । महेंद्रो मलयःसह्यः शुक्तिमानृक्षवानपि
Now I shall describe the land, as heard, O twice-born, with Mahendra, Malaya, Sahya, Shuktiman, Riksha also.
विंध्यश्च पारियात्रश्च सप्तैते कुलपर्वताः । तेषां सहस्रशो विप्रा पर्वतास्ते समीपतः
Vindhya and Pariyatra—these seven are the chief mountains; near them, O Brahmins, are thousands of other mountains.
अविज्ञाताः सारवंतो विपुलाश्चित्रसानवः । अन्ये तु ये परिज्ञाता ह्रस्वा ह्रस्वोपजीविनः
Some are unknown, full of essence, vast, with varied peaks; others, which are known, are small and sustain the small.
आर्यम्लेच्छसधर्माणस्ते मिश्राः पुरुषा द्विजाः । नदीं पिबंति विमलां गंगां सिंधुंसरस्वतीम्
There, O twice-born, dwell people of Aryan and Mleccha customs, mixed together, who drink the pure waters of the Ganga, Sindhu, and Sarasvati.
गोदावरीं नर्मदां च बहूदां च महानदीम् । शतद्रुं चंद्रभागां च यमुनां च महानदीम्
And the Godavari, Narmada, Bahuda, the great river, Shatadru, Chandrabhaga, and the great river Yamuna.
दृषद्वतीं वितस्तां च विपापां स्वच्छवालुकाम् । नदीं वेत्रवतीं चैव कृष्णां वेणीं च निम्नगाम्
Drishadvati, Vitasta, the sinless river with clear sand, the river Vetravati, Krishna, and the flowing Veni.
इरावतीं वितस्तां च पयोष्णीं देविकामपि । वेदस्मृतिं वेदशिरां त्रिदिवां सिंधुला कृमिम्
Iravati, Vitasta, Payoshni, and also Devika; Vedasmrti, Vedashira, Tridiva, Sindhula, and Krimi.
करीषिणीं चित्रवहां त्रिसेनां चैव निम्नगाम् । गोमतीं धूतपापां च चंदनां च महानदीम्
Karisini, Citravaha, Trisena, the flowing river, Gomati, Dhootapapa, and the great river Chandana.
कौशिकीं त्रिदिवां हृद्यां नाचितां रोहितारणीम् । रहस्यां शतकुंभां च सरयूं च द्विजोत्तमाः
The Kauśikī, delightful in heaven, the uninvoked Rohitāraṇī, the secret river, the Śatakuṃbhā, and the Sarayū, O best of twice-born.
चर्मण्वतीं वेत्रवतीं हस्तिसोमां दिशं तथा । शरावतीं पयोष्णीं च भीमां भीमरथीमपि
The Carmaṇvatī, the Vetravatī, the Hastisomā, likewise the Diśā, the Śarāvatī, the Payoṣṇī, the Bhīmā, and also the Bhīmarathī.
कावेरीं चुलुकां चापि तापीं शतमलामपि । नीवारां महितां चापि सुप्रयोगां तथा नदीम्
The Kāverī, the Culukā, the Tāpi, the Śatamalā, the Nīvārā, the honored one, and also the Suprayogā river.
पवित्रां कृष्णलां सिंधुं वाजिनीं पुरमालिनीम् । पूर्वाभिरामां वीरां च भीमां मालावतीं तथा
The pure Kṛṣṇalā, the Sindhu, the Vājinī, the Puramālinī, the charming Pūrvā, the heroic river, the Bhīmā, and likewise the Mālāvatī.
पलाशिनीं पापहरां महेंद्रां पटलावतीम् । करीषिणीमसिक्नीं च कुशचीरीं महानदीम्
The Palāśinī, the remover of sins, the Maheṃdrā, the Paṭalāvatī, the Karīṣiṇī, the Asiknī, the Kuśacīrī, and the great river.
मरुतां प्रवरां मेनां हेमां घृतवतीं तथा । अनावतीमनुष्णां च सेव्यां कापीं च सत्तमाः
The foremost of the Maruts, the Menā, the Hemā, the Ghṛtavatī, the Anāvatī, the Anuṣṇā, the serviceable Kāpi, O best ones.
सदावीरामधृष्यां च कुशचीरां महानदीम् । रथचित्रां ज्योतिरथां विश्वामित्रां कपिंजलाम्
The ever-valiant, the invincible, the Kuśacīrā, the great river, the Rathacitrā, the Jyotirathā, the Viśvāmitrā, and the Kapiṃjalā.
चंद्रावहफलद्यं चैव कुचीरामंबुवाहिनीम् । वैनदीं पिंगलां वेणां तुंगवेगां महानदीम्
The Caṃdrāvaha, the Phaladya, the Kucīrā, the Ambuvāhinī, the Vainadī, the Piṃgalā, the Veṇā, and the Tuṃgavegā, the great river.
विदिशां कृष्णवेणां च ताम्रां च कपिलामपि । धेनुं सकामां वेदस्वां हविःस्रावां महापथाम्
The Vidiśā, the Kṛṣṇaveṇā, the Tāmrā, the Kapilā, the Dhenu, the Sakāmā, the Vedasvā, the Haviḥsrāvā, and the Mahāpathā.
शिप्रां च पिच्छलां चैव भारद्वाजीं च निम्नगाम् । कौर्णिकीं निम्नगां शोणां बाहुदामथ चंद्रमाम्
The Śiprā, the Picchalā, the Bhāradvājī, the flowing river, the Kaurṇikī, the flowing Śoṇā, the Bāhudā, and the Caṃdramā.
दुर्गामंतः शिलां चैव ब्रह्ममेध्यां दृषद्वतीम् । परोक्षामथ रोहीं च तथा जंबूनदीमपि
The Durgāmaṃtaḥśilā, the Brahmamedhyā, the Dṛṣadvatī, the Parokṣā, the Rohī, and likewise the Jaṃbūnadī.
सुनासां तमसां दासीं सामान्यां वरणामसिम् । नीलां धृतिकरीं चैव पर्णाशां च महानदीम्
The Sunāsā, the Tamasā, the Dāsī, the Sāmānyā, the Varaṇā, the Nīlā, the Dhṛtikarī, and the Parṇāśā, the great river.
मानवीं वृषभां भासां ब्रह्ममेध्यां दृषद्वतीम् । एताश्चान्याश्च बहुला महानद्यो द्विजर्षभाः
The Mānavī, the Vṛṣabhā, the Bhāsā, the Brahmamedhyā, the Dṛṣadvatī—these and many other great rivers, O best of twice-born.
सदा निरामयां कृष्णां मंदगां मंदवाहिनीम् । ब्राह्मणीं च महागौरीं दुर्गामपि च सत्तमाः
The ever-healthy Kṛṣṇā, the slow-flowing Maṃdagā, the Maṃdavāhinī, the Brāhmaṇī, the Mahāgaurī, and also the Durgā, O best ones.
चित्रोत्पलां चित्ररथामतुलां रोहिणीं तथा । मंदाकिनीं वैतरणीं कोकां चापि महानदीम्
The Citrotpalā, the Citrarathā, the unequalled Atulā, the Rohiṇī, the Maṃdākinī, the Vaitaraṇī, and the Kokā, the great river.
शुक्तिमतीमनंगां च तथैव वृषसाह्वयाम् । लोहित्यां करतोयां च तथैव वृषकात्वयाम्
The Śuktimatī, the Anaṃgā, likewise the Vṛṣasāhvayā, the Lohityā, the Karatoyā, and also the Vṛṣakātvayā.
कुमारीमृषितुल्यां च मारिषां च सरस्वतीम् । मंदाकिनीं सुपुण्यां च सर्वां गंगां च सत्तमाः
The Kumārī, the Mṛṣitulyā, the Māriṣā, the Sarasvatī, the supremely holy Maṃdākinī, and all the Gaṅgā, O best ones.
विश्वस्य मातरः सर्वाः सर्वाश्चैव महाफलाः । तथा नद्यः सुप्रकाशाः शतशोथ सहस्रशः
All these are mothers of the universe, all are of great fruit; likewise, the rivers are illustrious, in hundreds and thousands.
इत्येता सरितो विप्राः समाख्याता यथास्मृति । अतऊर्द्ध्वं जनपदान्निबोध गदतो मम
Thus, O Brahmins, these rivers have been described according to tradition; now listen as I recount the regions beyond them.
तत्रेमे कुरुपांचालाः शाल्वमात्रेय जांगलाः । शूरसेनाः पुलिंदाश्च बौधामालास्तथैव च
Here are the Kurus, Panchalas, Shalvas, Maitreyas, Jangalas, Shurasenas, Pulindas, and also the Baudhāmālas.
