एकमेवानुरूपं च चक्रवाकसमं द्विजाः । निरामयाश्च ते लोका नित्यं मुदितमानसाः
There is only one suitable companion, like the chakravaka bird, O twice-born; their worlds are free from disease, and their minds are always joyful.
दशवर्षसहस्राणि दशवर्षशतानि च । जीवंति ते महाभागा न चान्योन्यं जहत्युत
These blessed ones live for ten thousand years and also for a thousand centuries, and they never abandon each other.
भारुंडा नाम शकुनास्तीक्ष्णतुंडा महाबलाः । तान्निर्हरंतीहमृतान्दरीषु प्रक्षिपंति च
There are birds called bhāruṇḍas, with sharp beaks and great strength; they carry away the nectar and deposit it in the caves.
उत्तराःकुरवो विप्रा व्याख्यातास्ते समासतः । मेरुपार्श्वमहं पूर्वं प्रवक्ष्यामि यथातथम्
O sages, the Uttarakurus have thus been described in brief; now I shall properly explain the region beside Meru.
तस्य मूर्द्धाभिषेकस्तु भद्राश्वस्य तपोधनाः । भद्रशालवनं यत्र कालाम्राश्च महाद्रुमाः
The coronation place of Bhadrāśva is there, O ascetics, where there is the forest of Bhadraśāla and great trees of black mango.
कालाम्रास्तु महाभागा नित्यंपुष्पफलाः शुभाः । द्रुमाश्च योजनोत्सेधाः सिद्धचारणसेविताः
The black mango trees are most blessed, always bearing flowers and fruits, auspicious; and the trees are a yojana in height, frequented by siddhas and cāraṇas.
तत्र ते पुरुषाः श्वेतास्तेजोयुक्तमहाबलाः । स्त्रियः कुमुदवर्णाश्च सुंदर्यः प्रियदर्शनाः
There, the men are white, endowed with great energy and strength; the women are lotus-colored, beautiful, and pleasing to see.
चंद्रवर्णाश्चतुर्वर्णाः पूर्णचंद्रनिभाननाः । चंद्रशीतलगात्राश्च नृत्यगीतविशारदाः
They are moon-colored, of four complexions, with faces like the full moon; their bodies are cool as the moon, and they are skilled in dance and song.
दशवर्षसहस्राणि तत्रायुर्द्विजसत्तमाः । कालाम्ररसपीतास्ते नित्यं संस्थितयौवनाः
There, O best of twice-born, the lifespan is ten thousand years; having drunk the juice of the black mango, they remain ever youthful.
दक्षिणेन तु नीलस्य निषधस्योत्तरेण तु । सुदर्शनो नाम महान्जंबूवृक्षः सनातनः
To the south of Nīla and north of Niṣadha is the great and eternal Jambū tree called Sudarśana.
सर्वकामफलः पुण्यः सिद्धचारणसेवितः । तस्य नाम्ना समाख्यातो जंबूद्वीपः सनातनः
It yields all desired fruits, is sacred, and is frequented by siddhas and cāraṇas; after it, the ancient land is known as Jambūdvīpa.
योजनानां सहस्रं च शतं च द्विजसत्तमाः । तथा माल्यवतः शृंगे पूर्वे पूर्वानुगांतकाः
O best of twice-born, it extends for one thousand and one hundred yojanas, and thus it follows the eastern slope of Mount Mālyavat.
योजनानां सहस्राणि पंचाशन्माल्यवान्द्विजाः । महारजतसंकाशा जायंते तत्र मानवाः
O twice-born, in Mālyavat, which stretches for fifty thousand yojanas, people are born there who resemble great silver.
ब्रह्मलोकच्युताः सर्वे सर्वे च ब्रह्मवादिनः । तपस्तप्यंति ते दिव्यं भवंति ह्यूर्ध्वरेतसः
All are those who have fallen from Brahmaloka, and all are knowers of Brahman; they practice divine austerities and are of upward-flowing energy.
रक्षणार्थं तु भूतानां प्रविशंति दिवाकरम् । षष्टिस्तानि सहस्राणि षष्टिरेव शतानि च
For the protection of living beings, the sun is entered by sixty thousand and sixty hundred entities.
अरुणस्याग्रतो यांति परिवार्य दिवाकरम् । षष्टिवर्षसहस्राणि षष्टिरेव शतानि च
They go before Aruṇa, surrounding the sun, for sixty thousand years and sixty hundred years.
आदित्यतापतप्तास्ते विशंति शशिमंडलम्
Those scorched by the heat of the sun enter the orb of the moon.
ऋषय ऊचुः-। वर्षाणां चैव नामानि पर्वतानां च सत्तम । आचक्ष्व नो यथातत्वं ये च पर्वतवासिनः
The sages said: O best among men, tell us the names of the regions and mountains, and also about those who dwell upon the mountains, as it truly is.
सूत उवाच-। दक्षिणेन तु श्वेतस्य निषधस्योत्तरेण तु । वर्षं रमणकं नाम जायंते तत्र मानवाः
Sūta said: To the south of Śveta and to the north of Niṣadha lies the region called Ramaṇaka, where humans are born.
शुक्लाभिजनसंपन्नाः सर्वे ते प्रियदर्शनाः । निःसपत्नाश्च ते सर्वे जायंते तत्र मानवाः
All those humans born there possess pure lineage, are pleasing in appearance, and are without rivals.
दशवर्षसहस्राणि शतानि दशपंच च । जीवंति ते महाभागा नित्यं मुदितमानसाः
Those blessed ones live for ten thousand five hundred years, always with joyful minds.
दक्षिणेन तु नीलस्य निषधस्योत्तरेण तु । वर्षं हिरण्मयं नाम यत्र हैरण्वती नदी
To the south of Nīla and to the north of Niṣadha lies the region called Hiraṇmaya, where the river Hairaṇvatī flows.
यत्र चायं महाप्राज्ञाः पक्षिराट्पतगोत्तमः । यज्ञानुगा विप्रवरा धन्विनः प्रियदर्शनाः
There also resides the great wise king of birds, and noble Brahmins devoted to sacrifice, skilled archers, and those pleasing in appearance.
महाबलास्तत्र जना विप्रा मुदितमानसाः । एकादशसहस्राणि वर्षाणां ते तपोधनाः
There, powerful people dwell, Brahmins with joyful minds; those ascetics live for eleven thousand years.
आयुःप्रमाणं जीवंति शतानि दश पंच च । शृंगाणि च पवित्राणि त्रीण्येव द्विजपुंगवाः
They live according to the measure of life, for ten hundred and five years; and there are three pure peaks, O foremost of twice-born.
एकं मणिमयं तत्र तथैकं रुक्ममद्भुतम् । सर्वरत्नमयं चैकं भवनैरुपशोभितम्
There is one made of jewels, one wondrously made of gold, and one made entirely of gems, adorned with palaces.
तत्र स्वयं प्रभादेवी नित्यं वसति शंडिनी । उत्तरेण तु शृंगस्य समुद्रांते द्विजोत्तमाः
There, the radiant goddess Prabhā always dwells, O Śaṇḍinī; and to the north of the peak, at the edge of the ocean, O best of Brahmins.
वर्षमैरावतं नाम तस्माच्छृंगवतः परम् । न तु तत्र सूर्यगतिर्जीर्यंते न च मानवाः
The region called Airāvata lies beyond that peak; there, the course of the sun does not decay, nor are humans found.
चंद्रमाश्च सनक्षत्रो ज्योतिर्भूत इवावृतः । पद्मप्रभाः पद्मवर्णाः पद्मपत्रनिभेक्षणाः
The moon, along with the stars, shines there as if enveloped in light; their radiance is like lotuses, their color is like lotuses, and their eyes resemble lotus petals.
पद्मपत्रसुगंधाश्च जायंते तत्र मानवाः । अनिष्पन्ना नष्टगंधा निराहारा जितेंद्रियाः
Humans born there have the fragrance of lotus petals; those who are unaccomplished lose their fragrance, are without food, and have mastered their senses.
